Crazy Sleeper

Sophia is so funny when she sleeps. I always find her in the craziest positions. Maybe that's why I love to check on her multiple times while she sleeps. I always try to remember my camera (or phone). Here are some examples from the past year.

3 Days Old - Fancy Lady

Sometimes she's an eskimo sleeper - 3 wks.

Showing muscles - 3 wks.

Sleeping with Dad - 6 wks.

Dead weight. Pearl Harbor, HA Sept. 2011

That arm bent that way can't be comfortable
 2/21/12

2/27/12
2/28/12
 Sleeping bent in half

Flipping me off - 2/29/12

Again with the arm! 3/1/12

Directly on the face - 3/28/12

Her hair is usually really crazy after a nap too. If we're going anywhere after her nap I usually wait to do her hair until right before we leave. Today was a first though. I went to get her from her nap and her hair looked like this:

Braid sticking STRAIGHT UP! I called her Alfalfa for the rest of the day.

At least she sleeps...and I am grateful.

Birthday Party

We had a little birthday party to celebrate Sophia's big year. It was a Balloons and Bubbles themed party so we sent invitations on latex balloons. We decorated with helium balloons around the house and some blown up balloons on the floor for the kids to play with. We had some small balloons decorating the food table and gave bubbles as party favors that we employed during the party. My personal theme was cheap and easy...you know, because she's only one year old. Success!

I love this picture because some of the older kids are playing with the balloons and Sophia in the background is so interested.

We had some kid-friendly food like cheerios, cheese, kix, and fruit. We also had some not-so-kid-friendly food like fruit on sharp sticks. They looked pretty though.

Sophia got a sweet haul of gifts. She wasn't great at opening them but she did enjoy seeing what was inside the packages and playing with her new toys. Thanks, everyone! The automatic bubble blower she got was especially appropriate for this party! It's really a present to all of us. Sophia gets to enjoy the bubbles at a rapid pace and neither Mom nor Dad have to actually blow on the stick to make them.

This is Sophia's cute friend, Hazel. They enjoy being in the same room together even though they don't actually "play" with each other.

We had fun sitting around chatting and eating while the kids played with toys & balloons between mouthfuls of cheerios. We tried to get Sophia to eat cake again but we were still unsuccessful. It must be how she keeps her girlish figure - I don't know where she got her willpower.

Happy Birthday, Sophia!

Sorry, I wrote this earlier but technical difficulties and a migraine delayed the actual posting.

Sophia turned one year old today! What a fun year it has been. We started the morning off with some birthday milk. Birthday milk is just like the regular milk she gets every morning but made with a little extra love. She also got some birthday morning kisses from mom and dad. I had a random errand to run in the morning and while we were driving I told Sophia about being in labor with her, about how I told her dad that I was pregnant (Did you hear that story? Maybe I'll blog about it). I told her about visiting her in the NICU when she was only days old. She may or may not have been listening to me.

After a nice morning nap her friend (and babysitter), Tayden, came to play. Milk, lunch, and then out to the playground. Don't let this picture fool you though, she's not terribly fond of the playground yet. But we'll keep trying. The day was beautiful though and she does love to be outside.

We took a couple of pictures out on the deck to make sure we'd documented the birthday girl. Taking pictures of 1-year olds is a little tricky, especially with my phone camera. It snaps pictures about 3 seconds after clicking the button so I get a lot of pictures of her looking down. I thought this one still turned out pretty well though.

As Carl and I were deciding the day's activities for this little girl on her birthday, Carl said, "She may not know it’s her B-day, but I want it to be the happiest day for her possible. So, cake, cheese, dancing, chasing, grass running, shoulder sitting. These should all be part of the plan."  So far we have checked off cheese, dancing, grass running.  She got to play a lot with Tayden and we wore her right out. She had a wonderful afternoon nap and probably dreamt about ... a field of binkies.

I love going into her room to get her from naps and nighttime. She's happy and usually standing & smiling to greet me. When she gets a good nap then she wakes up happy and usually chats with herself for a bit before I get to her.  Here is a little video I took the other day of going in after a nap. You can hear her chatting a little before I walk in the door.

She is loving this squeeze packet applesauce lately so I made sure she got one on her birthday. I don't know why it is so hilarious to me to see her suck this pouch of applesauce, but it is. After a nice little snack we played quite a bit of "chase" which everyone loves. She's getting a lot faster on her feet now so she can actually outrun me when I'm crawling. But she squeals and laughs as she tries to get away from her chaser.  Anticipation is really what this game is about though because the actual "getting her" part isn't really all that fun. I would love to capture some of this "chasing" on video. Gladdens my heart every time.  All that's left from Carl's list is shoulder sitting and cake.

Here's the birthday throne all ready for her! Don't judge me on my highchair decor - she's only one! Carl got home and there was plenty of tickling and shoulder sitting and hugs and kisses. We had a little dinner and then it was time to have some cake before bed.

Then we put all the streamers up
and gave her a card from her
grandparents to play with

Birthday dinner: Chicken and Fruit

I asked Carl when we should go shopping for a doll for Sophia (because we had previously decided to get her a doll and to shop for it together).  This was his response: "I already did a little shopping myself, you can “go in” on it with me if you want." Ha!

So we opened her presents before the cake. She got a Grover (from Sesame Street) remote control. Hopefully she'll like that one enough to leave ours alone.

Birthday Cake = epic failure. We presented Sophia with an amazing red velvet mini-cake with a chocolate pudding filling and cream cheese icing. It was literally irresistible. Yet... she managed to resist. Not only would she barely touch it, but when Carl put a little in her mouth to get her to taste it, she went berserk! She was batty mad about the forced feeding, and just wanted to go to bed at that point. :(  Well, there's always next year for a first birthday cake...

Official stats: 19 lbs. 13 oz., 29.5 inches long. She continues to follow the 50/51 percentile and her pediatrician kept calling her Little Miss Proportionate, which I thought was funny. Way to grow....just like everybody else.

Sophia is walking pretty well these days and Carl just loves to walk along beside her holding her hand. Here is one last video that I took of her today (proving she can walk) and capturing just a little of the birthday magic. When I played this video back for her she LOVED IT!  She had her arms out, fingers outstretched, and screamed (with delight) all through the video. I kept showing it to her because I thought it was so funny to watch her reaction.  Happy birthday, my sweet Sophia. Your dad and I thank our Heavenly Father for you every day and have had such an amazing year getting to know you. Can't wait to see what this next year brings for you.

Laser Eyes

I used to pride myself on my perfect vision. I often touted my 20-20 eyesight until one day I went to get my eyes checked and got a diagnosis of less-than-perfect eyesight. I had no idea that people saw things better than I did! Crazy.

Many moons ago Carl had laser eye surgery to correct his vision. Since I've known him he's had these "laser eyes" and we often depended on them when we needed to see something far away. I always wanted Lasik done because I'm all about a quick and easy solution to problems but didn't really think I'd ever do it. So I continued to wear my glasses to movies and when driving at night and at church and any other place I wanted better vision. Carl and I talked about the possibility of my getting Lasik done and if we could afford it - and then Groupon came out with a 50% off and I couldn't turn it down.

The procedure was significantly less scary than I expected. I couldn't ever do contacts because I hate touching my eyes but this was really not bad at all. Carl and Sophia came with me to my procedure (because I needed a right home) so they took some pictures.

Here is me all prepped and ready to go.  They gave me squeeze balls so I wouldn't accidentally grab up at my eyes or anything.

They had a video camera attached to the machine that fed into this tv screen outside of the operating room. Carl got to watch the procedure (which only took a few minutes) via this screen and snapped a few shots. This is of my eye with the flap open. Ahhhhh.

Procedure, Success! I currently have 20-15 vision and the recovery was mere hours - most of which were spent sleeping. Now we both have laser eyes. I have very much enjoyed not needing glasses at the movie theaters and church and it's great to read all the road signs so much earlier than before. I can't wait to scuba dive because I think a whole different experience is awaiting me. So glad I did it! Thanks, Dr. Perraut.

Sophia's big week

Whew. Sophia has had a big week! She is growing quickly and it's always fun to watch her develop and learn. In the past week:

1. She used a brush to brush her hair instead of just eat it. This may not sound like much but it's actually a great developmental step showing she's learning to use objects for their intended purpose. (don't worry, the list gets better.)

2. She's not afraid of grass anymore! Carl was so worried that she'd be a wuss and hate the outdoors forever because she was afraid of grass (and the playground). Hooray, we might have a future of playing at the park.

3. She learned how to crawl up the stairs. She's been doing one stair for a while now, just enough to get her out onto our deck and back in the house. While searching for Carl over the weekend she made it up the whole flight of stairs. If you've been to our house you know that's A LOT of stairs! We're still working on learning how to get down the stairs.

4. We might have a softball player for a daughter. The short version is that she threw something the other night from her crib clear over to her bookshelf, where I found it the next morning. She's got a good arm on her.

5. Let's see if I can upload a video. Sorry it's sideways. Silly cell phone video cameras. Anyway, she wanted nothing to do with her little push toy for quite a while. We pulled it out again the other day and she got right up and walked behind it. We were pretty impressed. I took several videos but the shortest one will give you the idea.

6. She learned that there are things behind the cupboard doors. This is NOT my favorite thing she learned this week. Her ignorance was bliss for me. Also, she has a spray bottle in her room that I use to do her hair and she likes to play with it. She recently figured out that if she sucks on the nozzle that she can get a little drink of water out of it. It's all cute and fun until she got under the bathroom cupboard and pulled out the shower cleaner. She put it aside while she was rifling through the other cupboard contents so I snapped a picture to text to Carl so he'd know his weekend plans included babyproofing. But then she grabbed that shower cleaner and tried to suck on the nozzle! AHHH! Luckily she didn't get any out because of my lightening fast reflexes (but I gave her a drink of water just in case) and we didn't call Poison Control.....this time.

7. She has a toy dog, Violet, that sings songs and talks to her, etc. She likes Violet but I didn't know she knew how to push her paw to get a song to start until today. Sophia was in my lap and we were playing with Violet and she pressed the paw to start a song. When it was over she would look at me, clap for the song, and then press the paw again for the next one. Followed by a clap, of course - Violet is very impressive. It was cute.

8. And last in the list but certainly not least! SOPHIA WALKED TODAY!!  Completely unprompted she decided to go from holding onto her crib bars over to the rocking ottoman without plopping down to crawl. She just let go and took one, two, three, four steps! She acted like it was no big deal and went about playing. I spent several minutes trying to get her to do it again for the camera but of course she was just more interested in the camera. So it's not documented but she did it and she took a couple more steps later in the day. I'm just pleased as punch.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, it is incredible to watch these little humans actually learn something. And I sure enjoy celebrating both the small and big accomplishments. Being a mom is better than I expected.
