NCAA Football Power Rankings, Week 15

The Errors:
None!

The Top:
The highest ranking that changed was #45 Coastal Carolina, swapping places with #46 Miami, as we only had one game this week, Army over Navy.

The Home Team:
As mentioned, no movement up around Missouri's section of the rankings.

The Bottom:
#129 Louisiana Monroe and #130 Nevada swapped places, but Kent State holds strong at the end of the line.

Winless and Lossless:
Neither Army nor Navy were on this list, so we still end the season with 4 undefeated teams and no winless teams.

NCAA Football Power Rankings, Week 14

The Errors:
Nothing old, but I noticed my data source is not including playoff games for FCS or Divisions II and III. In the past I always included those games. I guess I'm not this year, because we're 3 weeks deep in the lower division playoffs, and 2 weeks into the FCS playoffs. I can see some sound logic in excluding them, especially since some title games aren't until after the first round of the FBS playoff, meaning they couldn't really factor in, but it's different from what I used to do.

The Top:
This is the interesting part of course, although as I frequently mention, I do wonder what will happen if Army or Navy ever has a really outstanding season. Their game next week isn't just an exhibition. Washington maintains their #1 spot, and my playoff would be rounded out by Michigan, Florida State, and Alabama. It's no secret my system loves an undefeated record, but that's not a golden ticket, as Liberty only made it up to #7. There's much controversy about Florida State missing the playoff, and I'll have to agree that they should have a spot. However, even though Texas beat Alabama, I have them down at #5. Both finished 12-1, but Alabama's schedule was considerably tougher (by my metrics).

The Home Team:
Missouri was inactive for Conference Championship week, and lost two spots to #14. They played Georgia earlier in the year, so their loss and fall from #2 to #6 was probably the biggest factor in the drop. This is probably one of the only years I've ranked Missouri lower than the official polls.

The Bottom:
No movement in the bottom 7 teams, so Kent State retains their last place finish.

Winless and Lossless:
We ended the "Regular Season" with 4 undefeated teams after Alabama took down Georgia, and no winless teams.

NCAA Football Power Rankings, Week 13

The Errors:
None, now that we've got a lot fewer games per week, only 67 total in all divisions.

The Top:
Washington and Georgia swapped spots, and we have yet another new #1. Neither team beat a particularly tough opponent, but Washington's strength of schedule fell a little less than Georgia's. #5 Alabama plays #2 Georgia for the SEC, and #9 Oregon plays #1 Washington for the Pac-12, so the playoff picture has a change to get muddled, especially if #3 Michigan loses to #17 Iowa, #4 Florida State loses to #18 Louisville, and/or #6 Texas beats #22 Oklahoma State.

The Home Team:
Missouri won their regular season finale against Arkansas, and remains #12. A top 12 finish will be much more exciting next year when it means a chance at the championship.

The Bottom:
Kent State finished with another loss and remains #133. It's not impossible for that to change if their opponents or Akron's perform particularly well/badly in bowls, but I'd wager it won't change.

Winless and Lossless:
There were 6 undefeated teams, and one matchup between them. Michigan beat Ohio State, and all of the other unbeatens won, leaving us 5. There are no scheduled conference championship matchups between unbeatens, so we could go into the bowls and playoff with 5.

NCAA Football Power Rankings, Week 12

The Errors:
None, because I'm still catching up.

The Top:
Georgia is now #1, and former #1 Ohio State fell down to #3. James Madison finally lost too, eliminating the controversy of them not being allowed in the major bowls this year.

The Home Team:
Missouri won again and rose one spot up to #12. I don't think they'll have any shot at a top 4 finish, but eventually there will be 12 playoff spots.

The Bottom:
Just like last week, Kent State lost again to stay #133.

Winless and Lossless:
As I mentioned before, James Madison lost their first game, so now there are still 6 undefeated teams, all 11-0, and no winless teams.

NCAA Football Power Rankings, Week 11

The Errors:
None, because I'm still catching up.

The Top:
Ohio State wins again to stay #1. We had a little shuffling around despite the top teams winning, with James Madison dropping down to #6 and out of the problematic top 4, if the CFP committee were to pay any attention to me that is.

The Home Team:
Missouri won against Tennessee, but only gained 2 spots. In the official rankings, Tennessee was one ahead of Missouri before the weekend, #13 and #14, but in mine it was a #15 over #25.

The Bottom:
Kent State lost again and holds strong at #133.

Winless and Lossless:
There are still 7 undefeated teams, all 10-0, and no winless teams.

NCAA Football Power Rankings, Week 10

The Errors:
None, because to be honest I pulled this data very shortly after the week 9 post was made very late.

The Top:
Ohio State wins and holds their #1 spot, but the top 6 are all 9-0. James Madison rises all the way to #2, even though they are ineligible for the Playoff, and all or most bowls depending on where I read the details.

The Home Team:
Missouri lost, but only lost 1 position and fell to #15, because it was a high-quality loss, to the other #2 team, Georgia.

The Bottom:
Sam Houston State got out of the gutter with a win, and Kent State is now the worst team out there.

Winless and Lossless:
There are now 7 undefeated teams, down from 8, thanks to Air Force's loss to Army. Sam Houston State was the only winless team, so there are none remaining.

NCAA Football Power Rankings, Week 9

The Errors:
None! Sort of. 3 games have corrected scores, but with the same results, and I don't use points in these rankings, so Week 8 is still solid. Two of the games were all the way back in Week 6, and one was Week 8.

The Top:
Michigan took the week off and lost their top spot to their top rival and last week's #2, Ohio State. We've got some smaller schools sneaking up the rankings, too, with James Madison at #3 and Liberty at #7.

The Home Team:
Missouri was also off, and fell to #14 for it.

The Bottom:
Former #133 Akron was also off, and Sam Houston State managed to grab that slot from them with a loss.

Winless and Lossless:
There are now 8 undefeated teams, down from 9, with Oklahoma losing to Kansas. As mentioned above, Sam Houston State lost again, so they remain the only winless team.

NCAA Football Power Rankings, Week 8

The Errors:
None! Week 7's post is good as-is.

The Top:
Finally, some stability, as Michigan retains their #1 spot. Georgia did fall from #2 all the way to #9 due their bye, and the same happened to Notre Dame from #3 down to #13.

The Home Team:
Missouri holds steady at #4 with a win. While Georgia and Notre Dame dropped below them, Ohio State and Florida State leapfrogged them by beating Penn State and Duke, while Missouri beat lowly South Carolina.

The Bottom:
Akron lost again and holds onto the #133 slot with a 1-7 record.

Winless and Lossless:
There are now 9 undefeated teams, down from 11. Nevada won, leaving Sam Houston State as the only winless team.

NCAA Football Power Rankings, Week 7

I think I'm going to start covering the same points every week in a more organized fashion, instead of my variable-length ramble format.

The Errors:
My week 6 data had one bad game. Southern Utah beat Tarleton State 27-26, but as of my post I had the result flipped, 16-14. They missed 13 whole points! I figured by this point a single FCS vs FCS game would have almost no effect on the FBS-only rankings, but USC should have been #9 over Notre Dame, along with 18 other teams shuffling around by a position or two.

The Top:
We've got a new #1 again, Michigan, taking advantage of old #1 Oklahoma's bye week.

The Home Team:
Missouri beat #34 Kentucky, giving them a boost back up to #4 from #15, making that close loss to LSU hurt just a little bit more.

The Bottom:
Akron lost again and holds onto the #133 slot with a 1-6 record.

Winless and Lossless:
There are now 11 undefeated teams, down from 14, and both winless teams, Nevada and Sam Houston State, lost again.

NCAA Football Power Rankings, Week 6

I was nearly ready to write some sort of big apology post when I saw all the differences in this week's data compared to what I had last week. While it appeared to be a lot of problems, several of them could be ignored.
  • My data source added the games for Alderson-Broadus, a college that went bankrupt and closed this summer, but did previously have some games scheduled for 2023. All 5 games were entered as 0-0 ties, which I now ignore.
  • 2 Other canceled games were shown as 0-0 ties.
  • 20 games had score updates that did not change the winner. This was the biggest chunk and had no effect since this is a BCS-era algorithm, which was forbidden to care about the score.
Now, here were the problems.
  • East Tennessee State beat Carson-Newman, which was previously marked as a 0-0 tie. I now flag this scenario because it shouldn't happen under the current college football rules.
  • Northwestern (IA) over Drake, Eastern Kentucky over Southeast Missouri State, University of Texas of the Permian Basin over West Texas A&M, and Lindenwood over Western Illinois were all previously flipped. I should really pay more attention to Lindenwood, being in my own back yard. In fact, as a kid, my back yard literally abutted the Lindenwood campus.
  • 5 games that didn't exist before
    • Loras College over Benedictine
    • Dayton over Central State
    • Montana Tech over Central Washington
    • Cal Poly over Lincoln University (CA)
    • Harvard over St. Thomas (MN)
In the end, the top 10 was still correct, as well as the bottom 17 teams. #11 and #12 would have swapped, as would #16 and #18. The only other notable change is we would have had a tie for #26 between Duke and Wyoming, as well as a tie at #115 between East Carolina and Southern Mississippi. Those are only notable because ties are pretty rare in my algorithm after the first few weeks.

Now, onto the actual excitement of the week, #1 Texas lost to Oklahoma, your new #1 team, with Texas dropping to #5. Missouri couldn't quite keep the magic going, and lost to LSU despite some early leads, dropping them down to #15.

There are now 14 undefeated teams left, down from 22, and there are just 2 winless teams, down from 4. Connecticut pulled themselves out of the gutter with their first win, and Akron is the new #133.

NCAA Football Power Rankings, Week 5

There's plenty of jostling going on at the top, and this week Texas rose from #7 to #1 after defeating formerly #17 Kansas, who was also undefeated. That bumped Penn State down one spot to #2. Missouri is still somehow ranked #3 despite beating a relatively lowly Vanderbilt, but the 2 teams right behind them last week, Utah and Miami, lost and had a bye, respectively. My rankings do appreciate having more games played, so Ohio State's bye week hurt them a bit, too, knocking them from #2 to #19.

For the first time this year there were no errors discovered from the previous weeks, so hopefully that'll be the case going forward as well.

There are now 22 undefeated teams left, down from 27, and there are 4 winless teams, down from 5. Sam Houston State also had a bye and was kicked out of the #133 slot by Connecticut.
