THE CRIME JAZZ COLLECTION

WELCOME TO THE CRIME JAZZ DEFINITIVE COLLECTION

This will hopefully grow into a one-stop resource for spy themed recording from different genre's including Easy-Listening, Soundtracks, TV Themes, Surf, Library and much more.

My original intention for this collection was to create a set of covers for the many compilations I've found online as well as my own compilations for my own personal use, only but as I've now got a music blog I thought I would share them with you all.
I intend to add to the series on a regular basis with various "themed" discs.

The compilations from other contributors will be clearly marked as such and all credit for the disc will go to the original compiler.
ALL THE COVERS WILL BE MY OWN WORK

As a starter for the series I am honoured to include four volumes compiled & mixed by my good friend and fellow blogger "Licorice Pizza", in this series volumes 2,3,4,5 & 6 are his work, all other volumes are my own.

I have decide to host the collection here in a dedicated "room" just to keep them all together and in order (ignore post dates) rather than have them spread out all over the lounge with links here, there and everywhere (hope you agree)

A NOTE ON VOLUMES 2,3,4 & 5: These are "mixes" by Licorice Pizza, they download as one big mp3 file which you can either just burn to disc as a complete album or you can use the BURRRN software to seperate the tracks.
Use the cue file provided in the download and drag it into Burrrn to create track seperated CD's or drag it into Foobar2000 for listening to on your computer

If there are two parts to be downloaded, you need "both" to get the full album.

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 05

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 05 : MUSIC TO SPY BY 4 (Combo Mix)

The last (for now) offering from Licorice Pizza, I'll let him explain:
"I would call this a throw away if it was not such a good MiX. I came up with Vol 2 and Vol 3 after putting this together and then just threw this one aside because it seemed as though I needed to make seperate MiXes seperating the genres of Library and Jazz and I did. This one is the initial MiX Vol 2 but instead became Vol 4. About 60% of the songs on this MiX are on either V2 or V3. 40% of the songs here are not on either of them. I just listened to this recently and really like the blend of the Jazz and Library styles. Take it or leave it. The choice is yours. It is definately worth a listen"

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 06

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 06 : MUSIC TO SPY BY 5 (THE THEME OF THE CRIME)

The fifth release in Licorice Pizza's "Music To Spy By" series of compilations, presented here as part of our "Crime Jazz" collection. Licorice explains:
Crime Themes! This one was a fun comp to do but very hard to choose from all the great themes. It's in the can and another volume of great Crime Jazz is posted for all to enjoy. I started with around 100 different themes and narrowed it down to around 50 or so. Only 30 +/- will fit on a CD so many were left on the kitchen floor. Instead of sweeping them up and tossing them in the diposal, I thought why not do like Hollyweird does when they make a DVD? So in addition to Volume 5 - The Theme of the Crime, I have included a bonus CD with "Deleted Themes" Hey, might as well have some fun doing this. Slaving in a hot kitchen whipping up tastey Crime Comps is a tuff job. Plus you get the main course and desert with this meal of Crime Jazz! No MiX this time. If no one asks then I will leave it as is. Also, if you burn the comps to CD I recommend you burn with "No Gap" if your cd burner supports that feature.

All of the files have been trimmed to start and finish with the gap pre-set.

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 07

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 07 : THE SOUND DEPARTMENT

Back to another of my compilations for volume 7, this is my collection of Television themes from the Golden Age of British action/crime TV, the 1960's & early 1970's. Anyone out there not from the UK may not be familiar with a lot of these themes but don't let that put you off, this is a treasure trove of great music. It's a shame that a lot of the composers working in television don't get the recognition they deserve, there is a unique art in writing music able to set the mood & feel in a couple of minutes worth of music.

Slip on your shoulder holster, grab a tumbler of scotch and press play on your stereogram.
Britain's finest are contained within.

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 08

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 08 : THE SOUND DEPARTMENT 2

I knew I should have made the first one a two-disc set!
Here is another collection of British TV themes from the 60's & 70's, this time with more of a sci-fi feel but most of the tracks still retain a "spy or crime" theme. I may have stretched the genre here and there (even ignore it once or twice) but the overall intention with this series is to provide a "definitive" look at the world of action/adventure/espionage etc, so I hope you agree.

This volume has a very strong influence from one of the greats of 60's action TV, Mr Barry Gray, as well as composing all the music for the Gerry Anderson "Supermarionation" series' he has ventured into film scores as well. His music is always infused with a sense of Big Action, adding so much to the puppet creations he scored for. Also adding a few tracks is one of my personal favourites, Geoff Love, again a man that added such a Massive sound to the Big-Band Orchestra sound of the time. It's a mixed bag of themes but hopefully you'll find it a good listen.

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 09

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 09 : SYD DALE IN ACTION!
(2 DISC)

This is the first of my "In Action" series, each one will focus on the work of an individual composer working in Film, TV or Library. To start the series we have one of my favourite library composers, Syd Dale. Although he may not be too well-known outside the UK (or even in the UK), his music has been used for the last 30-40 years in various television series, commercials and films. He is probably best known for his lighter music although he also contributed many other styles of writing for various music production libraries, but the bulk of his work was for the Amphonic Library which Syd founded himself.

For those not familiar with Music Libraries, they were companies set up to record all types of "Mood Music" to be leased out to Film & TV production companies so they didn't have to spend money on hiring a regular composer. The quality of talent working for these libraries was incredible and it's only in the last decade or so that they have started to be released and gain the recognition they deserve. These recordings were never made available to the public, indeed most of them still aren't but through various compilations and people ripping their vinyl copies, a lot of these treasures are now gaining in popularity.

So here is a two-disc set of library tracks from Syd Dale, disc one focuses more on his action themed tracks, while disc two is a collection of his lighter, comedy themed compositions.
I must admit a personal fondness for the lighter side of Syd, although the opening track of disc one (Secret Service) is probably my all-time favourite peice of "Action/Spy" music writing.

Hope you enjoy this selection.

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 10

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 10 : BRIAN BENNETT IN ACTION!

For my second "In Action" volume I've chosen to spotlight one of the unsung heroes of British library composing. Brian Bennett was the drummer in The Shadows but unknown to people at the time led a second "secret" life as a composer for various music libraries. It's taken a long time but his talent is now fully appreciated, thanks to the explosion in collecting library albums by dj's and music fans alike. In recent years Brian has become well-known as a composer of TV themes, this collection however focuses on his "Golden" period, mainly the 70's & early 80's.

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 11

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 11 : ROY BUDD IN ACTION!
(2 DISC)

For this volume we have another great British film composer, Roy Budd.
Roy was a child prodigy and learned to play the piano by ear, aged just six. He formed his own jazz trio in his late teens and scored his first film at 23.

This two-disc collection focuses on his Movie scores from the 70's, where he created a style of his own. He had a wonderful way of mixing a big orchestral score with a funkier groovy rhythm which even today sounds fresh and modern. Sadly Roy passed away in 1993 aged just 46, but left behind a wonderful body of work for people to enjoy forever.

As with my Syd Dale set, disc one is "Action" based and disc two is from Roy's jazzier/easy compositions (most of them from films). Next to John Barry he is my favourite British composer and with no-one around today to carry on the tradition he may be the last of the greats (although David Arnold is my current favourite)

I hope you enjoy this collection, if you're not familiar with him you can sample a couple of tracks on the jukebox (on the main page)

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 12

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 12 : TONY HATCH IN ACTION!
(2 DISC)

Another entry and another British legend. Tony Hatch is famous for writing the themes to a few soaps but you'll be glad to know that none of them appear on this compilation.
This two disc set features pretty much all of his best compositions, including some tracks that, although were not written by him, still contain that "Hatch" sound. There is a varied collection of easy/latin/theme tunes presented here and although the other sets in this series have split the styles into Action on one disc and Softer music on disc two, Tony hasn't really composed much in the way of "Action" music, he was known as the British Bacharach, so this set is more Easy than Action. Hopefully it will be an enjoyable addition to the series.

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 13

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 13 : ALAN TEW IN ACTION!

Here is another volume of my "In Action" series focusing on the cream of British composers.
This collection features the work of Alan Tew, surely one of the funkiest writers of the 70's. His work has been sampled by various artists over the years and many of the original vinyl library albums from which most of these were taken sell for obscene amounts of money.
Although he recorded albums from many genres, the tracks here are taken from mainly from the hard to find "Drama Suite" albums from the "Themes" library (an offshoot of KPM) and The Hanged Man television soundtrack, of which many tracks were used for other shows.

Tracklist:

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 14

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 14 : REG TILSLEY IN ACTION!

Here we have the latest in our "In Action!" series which features the legends of Library and Easy composers. Reg Tilsley was a regular at the DeWolfe music library and composed a large number of great tunes many of which have never really been represented outside the world of library albums.
You will no doubt have heard a few of his compositions as they have been featured on various cult compilations here and there. Virtually nothing can be found about Reg online hence the missing "silhouette" from the cover.
I hope this compilation goes some way to bringing the genius of Mr. Tilsley to a wider audience. From smoky crime jazz to bright and easy listening Reg is a master of all genre's.

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 15

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 15 : LAURIE JOHNSON IN ACTION!

Yet another entry in our ever expanding "In Action!" series. This volume concentrates on the work of one of the best British TV & Film composers. Although he has scored countless movies and had massive success with his London Big Band it is probably his television themes that he will be remebered for most fondly. From the great "West End" used as the theme to the documentary travel series Whicker's World, right up to the almost perfect action scoring of The Professionals. This collection will hopefully be a little different from those already released by various labels. Sit back and let Laurie "The Professional" do his thing!

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 16

CRIME JAZZ : VOLUME 16 : THE LATIN SPY LOUNGE

Taking a break from our "In Action!" series for a while, here we concentrate on music taken from various crime/spy films & television shows with a latin influence. A personal favourite of mine, latin rhythm adds a wonderful smooth percussion style to all kinds of music and is very popular in the "crime jazz" genre. Most of these selections are taken from a time when latin music was taking over the world and nearly every composer of the time started adding the South American influence to their creations.
Sit back and let the music transport you to a yesteryear of exotic locations and swinging secret agents!
No-one can resist the Bossa Nova.......

As well as the usual suspects found onthese compilations I've tried to add a few of the rarer and more unusual scoresfrom that era!Because of the various sources and quality of these tracks I've decided to keepthe better quality rips to disc one and placed all the others onto a second disc.Consider disc two as a "bonus" disc...

Thanks go to Steve for help in sourcing some of the rarer tracks contained on the album.
