'79 Lasry Coupe

This time we have the Patchwork release, Modern Way, which some folks consider to be Lasry's most rockin' record. There are some fairly scorching guitar shreds on the B side. In fact this one gets around quite a bit genre-wise. Jazzy, ambient, space rockers, whatever made the grade in 1979. I checked the blogosphere for this before posting and found quite a few copy-cat posts featuring a misnamed Patchwork compilation with a few tracks from Modern Way. Figured it wouldn't hurt to offer up the real deal. Not much in the way of credits on the sleeve but by this time we know Teddy is pretty much a one man band. He will definitely be covering synths, reeds and drums. Not sure about the guitar and bass. Once again this is a slightly modified rip. Stretched a bit.

Guitar and vibraphone. I'm listening to that combination a lot lately so I thought sharing some of it would be the thing to do. I'm a total sucker for Florian Poser's vibes so there was no need to playcheck the record when I found it in a shop some time ago. I do remember that at home it was the first one on the deck. Some blissed out 40 minutes later I "woke up" and listened to some more records, but none of those was half as nice as this here LP. But beware! The whole record is really relaxed and - of course - acoustic, no drums, no synths etc. Just some good old handmade music!

Star Dance

Mostly solo effort from the guitarist and main songwriter in Jane. Hess is playing guitar, bass, keys and drums. He has help on drums from Bernie Van Der Graaf and Rosebud on a few tracks, Ulli Heicher plays bass and percussion on Vegas, and Wolfgang Krantz provides strings on 3 tracks. Sternentanz was released on the Sky label in 1983. The sound is quite different from the progressive Kraut that Jane was making. More of a cosmic sheen on these jams as befits a record named Star Dance.

Good Vibes . . .

Here is a later edition of the Volker Kriegel sound (1981). Volker is pushing the envelope as usual with his sitar-guitar and vibraphone heavy arrangements, courtesy of Wolfgang Schlüter. Journal features top talent from the experimental jazz world and the tracks cover a wide range of moods. This is a solid keeper, and currently my favorite Kriegel.

Strings Attached . . .

Strings? All over this record. Heinz Fröhling's guitars are very prominent in this late release which dropped in 1979. Gerd Führs is covering drums and synths per usual. 3 drummers on this release and yet another string player. Credits. A few of the tracks have a symphonic edge, but all the tracks have a cosmic shimmer; loads of synths. Well worth adding to your collection.

One Man Band

Claude Perraudin returned to the studio in early 80s for another solo effort. There is no date listed on this lp but there was a single from it released in 1981 so I suspect that would be the date for Jogging. Once again Claude is playing guitars, keyboards, drums and percussion and providing heavily processed vocals on Speaking Birds. The tracks range from upbeat synthpopesque exercises to very laid back relaxed jams. Perraudin had a good sense of humor which you will notice on a couple tunes. This is the last of his records I've been able to locate. He is rumored to have recorded a record in 1989 called Janus under the name 'Greg Baker' and another in 1999 under his own name called Guitar Tenderness. He died in 2001.

Sequential Echos

Überfällig is Günter Schickert's second solo lp. This one was released on the Sky label in 1979. Schickert is a guitarist and uses a looping system with echo, along the same lines as Reichel, Göttsching and Bloch. Charles M. Heuer is playing drums on a few tracks, also with an echo or delay technique. Brigitta Nabucet is providing the vocals on the second track, In Der Zeit. While this lp has similarities with other recordings in the same vein, to my ears it is still uniquely Günter Schickert.

Questions Answered

Delay Tactics was an experimental synth and guitar project from the early to mid 80s. Carl Weingarten, David Udell, and Walter Whitney recorded 2 lps, the first in '82 and this one in '84. The band name is from Weingarten's guitar delay technique which to my ears sounds a lot like Klaus Bloch's ping-pong system. Listen to 'Kites' on this record and you'll hear what I'm referring to.
