Spartan Games Ascension Tournament 1500 pts overall review

Heya all and welcome back to the webway!

Today I have participate in a local tournament in a store named Spartan Games Arena, as a result of several factors, but primarily due to the prospect that I may meet some people I know and also due to the beckoning of my current gaming group. Here's the pic of my army;

My army list is quite simple;

Duke Sliscus
1 squad of 9 Kabalites in a Raider with Splinter Racks, Grisly Trophies and Flickerfield
1 squad of 10 Kabalites in a Raider with Splinter Racks, Grisly Trophies and Flickerfield
3 squads of 5  Wyches with Haywire Grenades in Venoms with two  Splinter Cannons
1  squad  of 9 Reavers with 3 Heat  Lances and an Arena Champion with Venom Blade
2 Ravagers with Flickerfield
1 Razorwing with Flickerfield

The list that I am using is done as a result of me being unable to secure my Eldar allied detachment models in time for a true WYSIWYG, thus forcing me to use a less powerful list for the tournament.

For this tournament there are 20 players in total participating, with a surprising mix of armies. The main thing I noticed is the fact that there are a total of three Dark Eldar players and this oddly enough made us one of the largest Xenos contingents alongside the Tau. Chaos is ever present, with the Daemon presence being rather strong as compared to the CSM side. As usual Marines of every heraldic colour were present, and some lonesome armies. This brings us to the next surprising element of the tournament; no serpent spam and no Cronair. This actually made me rather happy in a sense.

However, quite a number of top players are in the event and I am honestly a little intimidated by their presence despite the fact that I once played with a majority of them on a regular basis.

The two pics below are when the players are gathering at the store and also the TO's of the tournament. One of the TO is actually my Deepstriking guru, which already made my day that much better. Also to my surprise, I managed to meet a number of my old gaming buddies from my ex-LGS (including in this rank of players is Mr.Chaos of painting fame (yes, I know him in real -life)).

Here are the pics of my gaming group's armies.

Top to bottom: Redeye's Tau, David's Ravenwing, Wong's Flyer spam/Tiggy Combo and Chris'  Farsight/Tau Empire army.

As you can see, my buddies actually came in with some rather brutal lists for the tournament, while my list is relatively weaker in comparison. Below are the armies of my fellow GC comrades from a long time ago (I see them from time to time, but not on the tabletop).

From top to bottom:  MrChaos' Orks, Kadir's Khornate host, Dann's Haemonculi coven and Joe's Daemons
Personally, I tend to notice that my roots as a balanced player comes from my days as a GC gamer, and it is from these people that I learned my approach to battle. That and having thematic armies. MrChaos went on to win Best Painted Army and also Best Sportsmanship, while Joe went on to becoming 2nd place in the tourney while Kadir won the biggest lucky draw of the day; the starter set for Dropzone Commander.

Of course there are also some other players as well, with a significant presence from Legio Malaysia, the premier gaming club in the nation. Things have changed since my day, and I am personally a ronin these days so fuck being part of a specific club (Lawl). Nonetheless here are pics of some of the other armies;

My overall performance in the tournament is well beyond my expectations; I managed to earn the maximum amount of points for my first two games and managed to be one of the main contenders for winning the tournament while my buddies have rather mixed results in their games. Quite the irony when one consider that my list is perhaps the weakest among my buddies.

Top to Bottom: 1st Game: DE vs Dark Angels, 2nd Game: De vs Draigowing, 3rd game: De vs DE/Eldar
My first game is essentially my army doing a divide and conquer upon all his forces and I totally annihilated his army within the 5 turn bracket.  My second game is a much more annoying prospect as 20 Paladins is a pain in the ass, especially with 8 psycannons and tons of storm bolters shooting at me but I managed to win by the virtue of having a scoring unit within his deployment zone.

However, it was in the third game that I met my match, and the Serpent is arguably the MVP of my opponent as it does as it pleases against my army. I had a chance to kill it off with  haywire grenades and also killing another Ravager in turn, but alas the dice gods decided that this battle will be where I fall hard. Thus I was almost annihilated as a result of the Serpent raping my stuff left and right. Unfortunately for me, this also means that I lost my chance of becoming the tournament champion, as my last battle is the battle between the two highest scoring generals. Due to the crushing defeat, I am pushed down to 7th place out of 20 players. Nonetheless as a result of the number of players, I am still one of the top players in the tournament at the time.

The top three armies for the tournament are;

1)Dark Eldar/Eldar
2)Daemons
3)Tau

Other than the Dark Eldar/Eldar, the other armies' position are consistent with the current meta of the game.

My overall experience in this tournament tells me that as a pure force, Dark Eldar has a lot going for them but to really win the tournament I must ally in some Eldar stuff to become a force to be reckoned with. In addition, I find myself a little too rash in some of my decisions which may work for me or against me. Some form of temperance is needed in my method of war.

Also, I am rather surprised in my performance today as this is one of my better runs in a tournament with my Dark Eldar. This makes me rather glad that I came for this tournament, as I am able to test the waters for the tournament in Malaysia and allow myself a little bit of knowledge of some of the top players in the nation since I have left the country.

Last but not least, I got some goodies for participating. For a fee of 10 USD, I got myself these few things as part of the goody bag. Trophies are overrated in my opinion, but things I can really use in real-life is much better for me.

And now for me to lick my wounds, and enjoy its dull sensation of pain and ecstasy..........see ya all next time!

Physical Compatibility - Deathwing vs Dark Eldar 1750 pts

Heya all and welcome back!
Venom Pringles anyone?
I decided to test out a list that I know I will enjoy using for the sheer shenanigans on Saturday and managed to get a Deathwing player to play against.

******************************

Rhazal looks upon his fellow Reavers as he waits for his turn to race in the death circuit known as 'Ice Cage'. There are many circuits around Commorragh, but the 'Ice Cage' is perhaps the one that Rhazal is truly fond of. Meant to simulate an Ice World, the ring is as cold as his blood and death could come at any moment, either from the blizzards, the monsters within the ring, and especially the other Reavers. One by one, the Reavers leave the maintenance pit to race in the 'Ice Cage', their jet engines roaring and screaming as they passed him.

It was then that Rhazal noticed chorus of sounds in the maintenance pit.

Sharp whistles and hooting howls are heard whenever Vespera passes the Reavers, but none of them dared to make a move as Vespera brough her own entourage of Incubi with her. The Incubi walked with a confident swagger alongside their Archite, their Klaives glowing with a cold fury ready to smite those foolish enough to come within a Klaive's length around Vespera.

Vespera could not believe what she is doing as of this moment, for it is not like her to ask for favours from anyone. Due to the complicated nature of this particular raid, she is forced to enter into the lair of the Reavers. Every once in a while she will have to come to this place to find pilots worthy for her Razorwing jetfighters and Voidraven Bombers, as her own Kabalites are too sluggish for aerial and space combat.

But this time she will need the services of these imbeciles for a special task at hand. Sending any ordinary Kabalite Warrior or Trueborns to offer the deal to the Reavers would not be sufficient, as the information could be leaked to other rival Kabals. The Reavers stopped their hooting and whistling as soon as the Archite and her entourage stopped.

"I will make my deal simple. Help me and I will give those that survive the ordeal their own choice of attack craft." Suddenly the entire maintenance pit is filled with murmurs, and true to their Dark Eldar nature, none of them trusted her deal. Vespera knew that for a Reaver, being offered their own aircraft is a prestige all of their own and in essence granting those she chose an escape from the death races of Commorragh.

"So....you are the reason for the commotion."

A rather rough, boyish voice cuts through the murmur and Vespera turns around to see a young Dark Eldar with dark denim blue hair with bright, venomous lime green highlights walking towards her. The Incubi immediately burst into action and soon enough all the Incubi are gone.
"Stop." Vespera said, and the Incubi are once more visible, with their powered blades barely an inch away from his body. The murmurs increases in volume as the other Reavers watches on.

" Whoa, whoa, whoa, easy there Milady." The Reaver jokes, and Vespera is surprised by the apparent lack of fear within the Reaver, and if he proved interesting enough, she might let him go. Not to mention that he is a rather dashing one, even if he does not realize it. She might give this Reaver an exception just for his looks, but there is something else that is bugging her about this Reaver.

"Your name." Vespera asked the Reaver.
"Rhazal, Arena Champion." The youthful Reaver answered the Archite without any hesitation, which is a feat in itself considering that four Incubi are pointing their blades at him and facing against an Archite no less.
"Khaine's Shadow." Vespera utters a word which made the Reaver smiled.
"You heard of me? I am honoured, Milady." The way in which he answers her is rather rude, and if this is any other Dark Eldar, he would be dead in a thousand pieces. Alas, she have her reasons for sparing the Reaver.

"Your voice is what saved you Reaver. You sounded familiar to me, and I now have the rare pleasure of seeing you without your visor. I did not expect that you are but a mere youngling......interesting." Vespera gives the Reaver a rather feline-like smile, and the Reaver could not help but to join in with the Archite as well, albeit this time with a little more nervousness in it.

Vespera puts a hololith in his palm, and her fingers are now caressing his chin. Soon enough her lips are now within nanometers of his ears, her voice now as soft and beguiling as the finest and most sensual of silk.

"I expect you to bring several of your Reavers along for the job."

******************************

Well, I decided to bring out all the Reavers that I have painted so far and decided to play around with a splashing of my Archon and as many Incubi as I could bring;

1 Archon with venom blade, combat drugs, phantasm grenade launcher, shadowfield
4 Incubi in a raider
5 squads of 5 warriors with a blaster in a Venom with second splinter cannons
2 squads of 9 Reavers with 3 heatlances and a champion with a venom blade
3 Ravagers

As for my opponent, his list consist of the following;
Belial
Librarian in Terminator armour
1 squad of 5 Terminators with an Assault cannon and two Thunder hammers and Stormshields with a Land Raider Crusader
3 squads of 5 Terminators with a Cyclone Missile Launcher and two Thunderhammers and Stormshields

Both of us are bringing in our fun list, as we both are bringing in things that we have just recently painted (Reavers in my case, Deathwing terminators for his case) as we both gotten a little tired of bringing more hardcore lists to our games for the past few weeks (He plays pure Ravenwing, while my list have a lot more dakka) and also wanted to have a more tactically challenging play.

Our mission for the day is Crusade, with 5 objectives and the deployment is Hammer and Anvil. As for warlord traits, his warlord trait is set at the hunt which is the Outflannking one.

I rolled for drugs and I got the Painbringer (a.k.a Rerolls to wound) while for my opponent's Librarian, he rolled in the divination discipline and decided to take Prescience.

There is no nightfighting and he won the roll to deploy and with that he sets his Land Raider with Terminators behind a small ruin while the rest of his forces are in reserve for his Deathwing Assault rule.

As for me, I am unsure if he is daring enough to deepstrike his guys in front of my entire army for just some potshots and thus I deployed to the side where there is the largest ruin and go about an anti-deepstrike formation.

This deployment took me a while as putting all these models on the table is just arduous, especially the Reavers

I decided to not seize the initiative and with that the game begins.

Turn 1
Rhazal managed to get several of his fellow Reaver allies to come with him to the raid, and for the first time in his life he was able to participate in a realspace raid alongside a Kabal. As they race through the webway portal, he could see that Kabals are truly organizations that have powers beyond compare.

Immediately as he entered into realspace he could see that the buildings around him are rather crude and broken, and the world dusty and foul-smelling. However before he could even formulate his opinions about realspace a loud explosion erupted right before him, and the Venom in front of him just barelly survived due to the illusions of the Flickerfield. Suddenly several of the Reavers went down as well, as a missile exploded into several fragments piercing their armour.

As the crescendo of gunfire and explosion filled his hears, he could only keep calm and move on less he too fall in this battlefield. Alas his senses are now even sharper than they were in the arena and the sensation of pain and suffering invigorates him.

The Deathwing player decided to play a more conservative play, and using the teleporter homer on his Belial, he deepstruck around the vicinity of the target and soon enough opened fire upon my forces with his missiles, killing two Reavers and reducing one hull point off a Venom.

My first turn was spend moving and Turboboosting a lot of things and getting lots of cover saves for myself, thus leaving me with two Venoms left to shoot at a Deathwing squad with the Librarian with it. This shooting phase is utterly hopeless, but I expected it to happen anyway.

Turn 2
Before Rhazal could even contemplate what is going on, his reflexes caused him to swerve his bike and barely avoiding several shots flying towards him and his unit. Several of the Reavers did not react in time and several more went down in flames. His heart started racing and his reflexes dulled down a little due to the myriads of emotion within his mind as he saw the bone white giants walking towards him, their eyes glowing red. For once in his life, Rhazal felt fear.

He immediately swerved his bike to move in another direction, but then noticed that another group of these giants are now upon the Archite and her retinue. For some odd reason, he decided that he must kill those giants coming towards the Archite and he revved up his engine and with unrivalled speed he used his bike as a weapon and sliced one of the giants down, and several of his Reaver brethrens also sliced down some of the giants.

My opponent disembarked Belial and his terminators while his other units moved on closer to the objectives near his side. During his shooting phase, he managed to gun down quite a number of reavers (both squads) down using his Land Raider Crusader and also his terminators. The Reaver squad at his deployment zone (designated Reaver A)and the one within mine (designated Reaver B) did not fail their leadership.

His missiles failed to do much this turn once more, but his Belial squad managed to bring down two Venoms, and thus earning First Blood. His Belial squad then charged into one of the Kabalite warriors squad and wiped it out.

As for my turn,I maneuvered a number of my units towards Belial and hope that I could kill them off and earn Slay the Warlord. My Raider moved itself to the space between the Land Raider and my own forces while my Venoms decided to move forward to put the Librarian squad within its sights. During the shooting phase, I managed to reduce the hull point of the Land raider down by one and stunning it, while my Venoms and their passengers managed to kill off three terminators.

My Ravagers combined with the bladevaning from Reaver A and shooting from Reaver B managed to kill off a number of Belial's retinue off and reducing it down to one dude with Thunder Hammer and Belial himself. Reaver B failed to try and jump back (damn you double 1s) after they shot, and I soon learned that I can never rely on that 2D6s roll to roll an average.

My Archon and the Incubi decided to charge in to try and finish the job. I did not offer the challenge, but my opponent did, and with that we are locked in combat. I managed to kill off the remaining Deathwing dude, but since Belial is fearless we are locked in combat.

Turn 3
Sensing that the Archite is in good hands, Rhazal and his Reavers moved ahead and soon come face to face with a large brutish vehicle, armed to the teeth with a myriad of weapons. The vehicle opened fire and suddenly the other Reaver squad was mowed down by the firepower. Rhazal could see that the survivors are now making a run for it, and Rhazal knew that if he were to survive he would have to kill that thing.

One of the other Reavers fired its Heatlance and managed to penetrate the vehicle, but failing to kill it. Before long, several shots from the passsengers in the Venoms grazed its armour but the hulking vehicle did not want to go down. The gun of the hulking thing soo swivelled and Rhazal knew that death is coming soon. However a trio of darklight came from behind him and destroyed the vehicle in a spectacular explosion, bringing down several of the Reavers accompanying him as well.

My opponent's third turn is rather uneventful as he understood that he had lost the game of maneuver with my forces and could only hope to try and make my life difficult with the attempts to reduce my forces. He casted his prescience within a problem upon one of the Deathwing squad and soon enough he fall back to a more defensible location. With that done, he fired upon my forces.

His Land Raider managed to reduce Reaver B down to two dudes, and Reaver B failed their leadership check and ran away. He also shot some of the dudes in Reaver A down as well, reducing them to three dudes. Luckily for me Reaver A passed their leadership once more. He also managed to bring down another Venom down during his shooting phase, but he failed to kill any of my Ravagers. During the combat phase, my Archon managed to bring Belial down to a single wound, but since he is fearless we are both stuck in combat.

In my turn I managed to regroup Reaver B and with my forces I pushed on ahead, with the Kabalite warriors running towards the objectives due to their dismal range. The Land Raider Crusader is the primary target for this round, and with the combined firepower of one Ravagers, one blaster and a Heatlance from Reaver A, I managed to kill it. My shooting towards the Deathwing squads that was near the objective is quite successful as I managed to kill off three  Deathwing on each squad.

In the assault phase, Reaver A jumped far enough to hide behind a terrain in my deployment zone while the combat with Belial ends in a stalemate.

Turn 4
Rhazal is now filled with the euphoria of battle and could not contain his excitement, however it did not last. He suddenly hears a bone-chilling scream and turns around to see the Archite being struck down by bone-white giant's weapon. Believing her dead, he wanted to avenge the Archite but then noticed that the Incubi are now violently hacking at the brute with all their might. However the brute did not seem bothered by the weapons and with a single swing, struck two of them down. Realizing that they are outmatched, the Incubi dropped their weapons and began pulling the Archite away from the beast.

Realizing that I was also going for the objectives, he rushed his Terminators towards the objectives, he managed to move them all closer to the objectives. He tried to shoot down my Ravagers, but he failed to kill any one of them. In  In the assault phase, my Archon finally failed her invulnerable save and bit the dust. My Incubi managed to pass their leadership and stayed in the fight.

Seeing that the only way I could win this is to play to the mission, I went ahead and managed to move my two Kabalite warrior squads to the two objectives. Another good thing that happened during this turn is that I managed to regroup Raver B, which also opens even more avenue for contesting objectives for me.

This allowed me to at least have options when I play for the subsequent turns. With that I decided to unleash even more firepower upon the Terminators, but unfortunately I was not that lucky and only killed one off the Librarian squad. My Incubi went on ahead and try to kill Belial, but they utterly failed to penetrate that Storm Shield of his and he bahses two of them to oblivion. I failed my leadership and ran away.

Turn 5
As Rhazal speeds towards the beast, ready to kill him with his own hands the beast soon  turned his attention towards a ravager speeding past him, and with one throw of his hammer he downed the vehicle. Rhazal could not even comprehend the skill of the brute in bringing down a Ravager as the vehicle is among the fastest in the universe and the monster brought it down

Rhazal suddenly realized that this beast is a great warrior, and the Dark Eldar within him is telling him that if he dares to go ahead and challenge the beast, he would be dead. However, a darkligght beam came out of the blue and brought down the beast before he could do even more harm.

"You...."  Rahzal could hear the Archite's voice calling for him and he realized that the Archite and her retinue are now below him.
"Milady....you are alive!!!" Rhazal exclaimed with surprise.
"That would not kill me. Remember your just reward ....you fool." Before he could even reply, the Archite once again fell limp.
"Fear not Reaver, Lady Vespera is just unconscious. We will take care of her." The Incubi said to him. Recalling that the Incubi are the only trustworthy Dark Eldar, Rhazal left her to the care of her Incubi. As he races throughout the entire burning battlefield, he could see the dead and the dying everywhere and wondered where could that thing that she seek be.

"Rhazal, look up ahead. Something's going on there." One of the Reavers pointed out, and Rhazal's eyes noticed that the Dark Eldar forces are now concentrating their fire on that particular location. Without even a second's hesitation, he revs his jetbike and zooms towards the war zone. As he draws closer he sees a bone white giant holding his ground shooting his weapons at the Dark Eldar forces. Rhazal decided to ascend through the heavens to the point where the bike started stalling.

With a death-defying dive, Rhazal dived down spinning his entire jetbike towards the bone white giant. As he descends faster and fast, Rhazal could feel the exhilaration of speed coursing through his body and he could only smile behind his visor. He powers back his jetbike and drifts his jetbike in a scything arch while barrel-rolling towards the bone giant..

The bone giant was caught by surprise and the jetbike manages to slice the throat of the bone giant off but without decapitating him. As Rhazal regains control of his bike and stops, the Dark Eldar forces cheered him on. The bone giant twitches before collapsing on its knees.

The Reaver walks towards the fallen brute and notices something under its feet. Rhazal soon realize that it is what he was looking for.

My opponent moves his forces towards the objectives, and tried to gun down my ravagers, and managing to strip two hull points off one of the Ravagers and killed off the Raider. In the assault phase, Belial made short work of the Ravager with the single hull point.

Since this could potentially be the last turn, I really need to kill Belial for that extra VP and also to protect the kabalites that were sitting on my objectives. For that I decided to use Reaver A to do something about it along with the Kabalites on the objectives, while the rest of my forces concentrate on the two man Deathwing squad to take it off the objective.

In my shooting phase, one of the Kabalite squad managed to kill Belial off, thus earning me the Slay the Warlord point as well.

The two man Deathwing squad suffered the wrath of the remainder of my army and even with that one Deathwing still survives and will let him win the game by a big margin. I was actually thinking a little harder than I shouldd have, when I realized that Reaver A is still alive. With nothing else to lose, I decided to turboboost the squad and bladevane the lone Terminator and really hope that I could pull it off.

To my amazement, the Deathwing terminator died, and man was I happy as hell. However, I was expecting a loss, as I thought that the Deathwing squad with the Librarian was also holding an objective.

Since this is the end of turn 5, we rolled to see if the game goes on and with a roll of one, the game ends.

Post-Game and Afterthoughts

Rhazal is now in the heart of the Kabal of the Rapturous Venom along with the other four Reavers that survived the raid, and he could not believe that he and a few others would be granted the riches needed to get out of the ring forever. As he stands uncomfortably in the throne room, he also remember that a Dark Eldar is by nature treacherous, and he was wondering if the Kabal called him all the way here to make him 'disappear'. Indeed that is something not unusual in the dark city, and Rhazal's mind is literally going to places where even he is not sure of.

"Reavers...." the soft, sultry and silky voice enters his ear and the Reavers turn around to see that the Archite is no longer in her armour like those she clads herself in during her visit to the racing circuit and also the battlefield. Instead he is now looking at a being of impossible beauty, matching those of Leiltih Hesperax herself, her gown almost translucent, revealing her naked amourous form and her long, velvety dark turquoise hair running down her back. As she stared at him with her bright azure eyes, Rhazal could only looked at her and her......assets. As she walks towards her throne, the dark reflective surface of the floor only serves to inflame their masculine nature.

"Well done all of you, for surviving. My Kabalites shall lead you to your prize. Rhazal, you shall remain here." Before long, the Kabalite warriors led the other Reavers out of the throne room, leaving Rhazal alone with the Archite.
"They will not leave this place alive won't they?" Rhazal finally opens his mouth, and in response the Archite could only smile devilishly.
"Indeed. But you will. Come closer till I ask you to stop."

The Reaver walks closer to the Archite, not sure of her actions. Before long, he is already standing right before her. He hesitated as soon as he is in front of the throne.
"Reaver...did I ask you to stop?" Before long, he is now leaning towards the throne and he could feel her breath on his neck, and the sensation of her smooth flesh wrapping around him in an embrace. He could feel her soft bosom on his chest, and before long he could feel her body heat upon his own. He tried to keep his arousal down, however it all broke down when he heard Vespera's words

"I have always been a big admirer of yours, and indeed I was looking for you.....I am yours for tonight.' Vespera's lips meets the Rhazal's own, and she gives the young Reaver a rather sensual kiss that ignites the passion within the young Dark Eldar.

******************************
Well, the game result in the end of the day;

Deathwing: 6 VP
Dark Eldar: 8 VP

Dark Eldar Victory!

I was honestly surprised when it turned out that the Librarian-led Deathwing were 5" away from the objectives, short of capturing it.

As for the tactics in this game, I find that my opponent's target priority was a little off due to the presence of the Reavers messing with a lot of things in his army. In addition, his forces were outmaneuvered and outgunned by my own which caused a lot of problems for him.

My mistake would be that I moved Reaver A too aggressively during the first turn which allowed my opponent to shoot at them. I should have waited a little more patiently before I commit them. I really need to learn to use my Reavers patiently, less I killed them off for nothing. Target priority-wise, I should have shot a little earlier at the Crusader instead of trying to murder off the Belial squad, and I almost paid the price for my hubris.
Nonetheless, I was pleased with my performance in this game as some daring play on my part worked out for me.

Edit: Turns out that Belial is the one with the teleporter homer. Editted.

A summary of the 2 vs 2 with my gaming buddies - Dual Wraithknight and Eldar/Eldar Venomspam vs Tau Riptide/Farsight bomb Spam and Eldar/Deathwing

Heya welcome back to the webway!

This Saturday I was asked by my Eldar friend to team up with him to fight against two other players buddies of ours, and essentially the idea is to bring 'cheesy' lists to the table. They requested me to bring a Venomspam list (but I one-up them with a farseer and some bikes just for psychic powers and I took the Baron) and I complied. As for my teammate, he was wondering what he should bring, and I said bring a Seer Council and two Wraithknights supported by three Wave Serpents. He took the idea and we said to ourselves that our plan is simple; kill them all.

One of our opponents brought a Farsight bomb with three Riptides with two skyrays and one hammerhead, while the other brought in lots of War Walkers with some allied Deathwing terminators, Belial, and a Tactical squad.

Suffice to say, there is a lot of murder on the board as my team was able to get the first turn (thanks to the Baron), reducing their reserve roll by 1 (My warlord trait), and nightfighting. I have forgotten my friend's warlord trait as he rolled from the Iyanden book, but it was also delicious from my memory.

The mission was The Relic, and we deployed using the short table edge. As you could see from my team's deployment, we are essentially using the combination of cover provided by the ruins and also the Serpent's Shield and also Wraithknights. In addition, all my stuff have Nightshields so their guns would not be able to reach us.

Our opponent's failed to seize, and the game begin with the Wraithknight jumping forward and using its Heavy D-cannons killed the first Riptide by instakilling it. Lots of firepower was brought forward during the first voley, and whatever that could not shoot turboboost.

As you could all see, we essentially took control of the relic within the first turn and also occupy the sweet spot of our armies.

Sadly for our opponents, their next two turns are horrible as the combination of bad luck and also my warlord trait failed to let them have their reserves to come in to save them. By the time of our third turn, two riptides are already dead, and we are on our merry way with the relic. My force bore the brunt of the opponent's shooting, and thus a few vehicles were slain as a result of this.

Amazingly thanks to Protect/Jinx, the Deathwing that arrived had a 3+ armour save rather than their 2+ and thus with that my Venoms came in and with a cast of Doom from both of us (Yes, both my friend and myself managed to get Doom for one of our powers) we killed them mercilessly. The Farsight bomb that came did not fare any better as they too suffered the same treatment.

This picture above was taken before the Farsight bomb was murdered down to the last man. So much for Shadowsun's super shield thing. By about this time, the last Riptide and the Spiritseer warlord was also murdered by the two Wraithknights. By the end of their 3rd turn, they conceded as both the Wraithknights are poised to shoot and charge the Tau firebase. while my Venoms are poised to kill their infantry units as well.

With several linebreakers in their lines, their warlords slain, and the relic in our deployment zone, we won this very convincingly and brutally. It was hilarious to see our opponent's reactions when we told them about all the Eldar trickery that we could pull off. A good game overall, but the only regret I have is that I do not remember too much about anything else to write a battle report about this and will have to do with a summary.

Differences - Dark Eldar vs Eldar 1750 pts

Heya all and welcome to the webway!

It has been a while since I have thrown out a battle report, due to being busy with life and getting to reestablish my contacts back in Malaysia and also getting ready for job-related stuff. However I managed to get a game with a dear friend of mine, who is an avid Eldar player and this battle marks our first battle in over two years.

Without further ado, here is the report.

Vespera has been rather dominant in her battles with the Imperials within the Argalus sector and the Emperor's Finest (or at least that is what they call themselves in their own barbarous tongue) are proving more a nuisance than a true challenge. Indeed, she is rather perplexed by the sudden lack of quality of Imperial opposition, for it felt like they are weakened not because of their endemic inferiority but by external forces.

However, she is not truly complaining about the current state of affairs and decided to take the opportunity to raid as much as she wants. Her eyes are now upon a particular Mon-Keigh city known as Kapersk, the capital of the Argalus sector. The slave shall be hers for the taking.

My opponent's army list is quite a mix of things, but they are meant to create a more well-rounded approach to a lot of things, and below is the things that he took;

1 Farseer on Jetbike with Singing Spear
3 Warlocks, two on jetbikes with spears and one on foot
1 Spiritseer
5 Wraithguard in Wave Serpent with Twinlinked Scatter lasers, Shuriken Cannon and Holofield
2 squads of 6 jetbikes with 2 Shuriken cannons
1 Crimson Hunter
7 Dark Reapers with all the missile options and the Exarch upgrades
1 Fire Prism with holofields
3 Warwalkers with scatter laser and Starcannon
Aegis defense line with Icarus lascannon

My list is somewhat my fun/balanced list against all opposition.

1 Archon with venom blade, combat drugs, phantasm grenade launcher, shadowfield
1 Haemonculus with liquifier gun
5 incubi in a raider with nightshield
2 squads of 3 Blasterborns in a Venom with second splinter cannon
3 squads of 5 Warriors with a blaster in a Venom with second splinter cannon and nightshields
2 squads of 5 Warriors with a blaster in a Raider with nightshields
2 Ravagers with 3 Lances and nightshields
1 Voidraven with Flickerfield and 2 shatterfield missiles

The mission is Emperor's Will, and the deployment is Hammer and Anvil with Nightfighting on for the first turn.  My opponent manages to get the the placing of objectives and the deployment , and he deployed his objective and his troops. He hid his objective behind the solid LOS blocking building (Where he puts his embarked Wraithguard on). He rolled for his psychic powers and he managed to get Guide, Prescience, and the power that allows him to reroll everything on himself, while his Spiritseer gets Conceal/Reveal and Protect/Jinx, while his warlocks all got Conceal/Reveal. His Warwalkers and Crimson Hunter are in reserves.

For me, I decided to stay the heck back and use the cover as much as I could and using the nightshields to the best of my ability. For my objective I place it on the hill at the center of my deployment zone, and my drug roll came out and I get to reroll failed to wounds. I decided to nnot bother seizing the initiative and the game begin.

Turn 1
Farseer Alathis commanded his forces upon this particular location to take the relic that he had predicted would be used against the Eldar of his craftworld by the Imperial forces. The Evernight. For that he had mounted many raids upon the entire sector, weakening them so that they could never strike against his craftworld. Alas, the last piece of the puzzle brought him here to the ruins of the city known as Kapersk to retrive the item that would cause great suffering upon his people. His strike force is small, but mobile enough to take advantage of the Mon-Keigh's weak defenses. Alas when he arrived it seemed that the defenders had left their positions in a hurry.

Sensing the great unease in his heart, he cast several wraithbone runes in the air to forecast the probabilities of success in their mission to retrieve the artifact. His forecast came up with a rather odd result; There shall be differences that will lead to a great amount off turmoil, but understanding shall light the way. He tried to pry the message behind the runes, but he is unable to do so. Everything is a deep shade of grey for the seer, and the grey area is never a good sign.

Suddenly the Dark Reaper Exarch who had taken the initiative to command the primitive Mon-keigh weaponry fired the weapon and a loud explosion could be seen and heard throughout the ruins of the battlefield. As his eyes looked upon the explosion, he could see several ship-like crafts speeding past the ruins and soon enough the Dark Reapers were taking casualties.

He looked upon the battlefield and understood immediately that a great turmoil between the two halves of the Eldar race are upon them.

As a result of nightfighting and also the nightshields, his forces were unable to shoot upon my own forces and thus his Dark Reaper Exarch which has Night fighting is the only one that could fire on anything. With a single precise shot, he blew up my raider and with that, First Blood belongs to my opponent.

In return, I moved my forces as close as possible while taking advantage of cover saves from the ruins, jinking and also blocking LOS using my raiders and killed 3 Reapers off. It seems that in my caution I also have overestimated the range of my own weapons and thus I am unable to do much as well. The passengers from the destroyed raider ran towards the objective and securing it for the time being.

Turn 2
Vespera could finally see what is going on and it seems that the meddling distant cousins of theirs had been up to their old tricks once more. With nothing to lose, she could only smile as the destruction around them become even more violent. Soon enough she could hear a loud roaring sound from above her and before she could even discern the nature of the sound, her craft was hit by two bright lights. A lifetime of surviving through the battlefields of the galaxy allowed her to leap out from her aircraft fast enough to avoid being a victim, but one of her retinue was not as fortunate. Seeing that her prized Raider was destroyed, she could only curse as she make a run towards the nearest ruin. Her heart is now boiling with rage, and she will see to it that someone will suffer for this.

My opponent manages to bring in both of his reserves and his Crimson Hunter flies towards the center of the battlefield while his warwalkers flanked from the sides. After doing the compulsary casting of powers (which he succeeded) and also the movement to gain the saves from the holofields and jink for his bikers and skimmers, he fired upon my forces. During that round of shooting, one of my Trueborn Venoms and my remaining Raiders bit the dust. In the wave of explosions, one warrior, one incubi and two Trueborns were incinerated. In the assault phase he decided to try and jump back to cover with his Jetbikes, and he succeeded in doing so.

After his round is done, I realized that I have several threats to my entire army both in the short-term and also the long-term. For the short term, the Reapers with their buffed armor and cover saves, the War Walkers, the skimmers and the Aircraft are pressuring my forces. For the log-term, those bikers will be able to rush in on my objectives and also gun down my vehicles.

During my turn, my Voidraven decided not to come in and I breathed a sigh of relief, for the Icarus can utterly decimate my Voidraven, especially with the Exarch manning it. After moving my infantry units into cover, I realized that I need to take out that Icarus quickly to achieve air parity with the Crimson Hunter and with the combination of Venoms, I brought that Icarus down and one more Dark Reaper down. With that down, I tried my best to take potshots at the Crimson Hunter to see if I could bring it down, but alas I failed to do so. With those targets down, I decided to turn my attention to the two things that will bug me in the next few rounds if I let them live; the Wave Serpent and the Fire Prism. To my amazement, My two Ravagers managed to destroy the Wave Serpent and also Immobilized the Fire Prism thereby cutting down the threat level of my opponent considerably. The question now is how do I deal with those jetbikers, the Crimson Hunter and the War Walkers?

Turn 3
Farseer Alathis did not anticipate the lost or immobilization of all his skimmers within one fell swoop. His Dark Reapers are slowly being mauled by the poisoned weapons of their Dark Kin despite the psychic assistance and protection from the Mon-Keigh structure. It is a wonder that the Dark Reapers were still alive, for the hail of poisoned shards were such that the Mon-Keigh weapon was rendered useless.

As he cast his runes in the air once more, he hoped for a sign that would be the bearer of good news. Alas what he got was the same omen once more. Seeing that staying still would only put them at the mercy of the Dark Kin, he ordered his forces to take the initiative away from them. With a cry, he led his forces into the unknown. Immediately he took notice of a group of Dark Kin that were different from the rest and amongst them he felt a presence. It seems that the presence also noticed him, and soon enough from the ruins charged the Dark Kin.

Seeing that I am striping him of his ability to strike on my vehicles, my opponent decided to push onwards to break through my cordon. Surprisingly his Farseer suffered Perils, and he used his ghosthelm, thereby denying him from casting any more powers. His Warlocks and Spiritseer have some mixed results as well, as one of his warlocks failed to cast his power.

Realizing that my squad of warriors are unmolested, he decided to unload the firepower of the War Walkers on the poor unfortunate souls and wiped them out of existence. Meanwhile his bikers attempted to shoot at my Venoms and managed to kill one of the Venoms off, causing the Warriors to be pinned. One of my Ravagers was shot down by the Crimson Hunter, and his Dark Reapers killed off the other Ravager. He attempted to jump back, but unfortunately one of his jetbiker squad were left out in the open.

Sensing that the momentum had changed, I hoped that my Voidraven was able to enter into the game to let me take advantage of it. Alas, my Voidraven managed to come in and as it entered in it dropped a void mine and exploded two of the War Walkers. I tried to kill his Dark Reapers but they were utterly invincible My Voidraven managed to destroy the pulse laser from the Crimson hunter and my blasters also managed to kill off another Dark Reaper and also glanced a hull point off the Fire Prism. I also managed to kill one jetbiker off from the Seer squad using the lone blaster from the last standing trueborn.

I charged in the other squad with my Incubi squad and Archon but I failed the charge. For some reason I am not liking this turn of events.

Turn 4
Vespera is utterly furious,  but her rage was cut short by the array of fire coming towards her from both sides. As her Incubi died one by once, her supernatural reflexes are the only thing keeping her alive and as she darts towards the jetbikes, her eyes are set on one target and one target alone; the Farseer. With a single throw of her Vennom blade she managed to bring down the Farseer down from his jetbike and jumped on him with a fury like no other. With a roll, the Farseer barely dodges her other attacks and  soon enough both of them are now staring to each other; one filled with rage while the other filled with confusion.

Realizing that the survival of his only way of winning the game is under threat from all my venoms, he decided to move forward and attempt to engage those that will stand in his way. His firepower against my venom was very dismal and he only managed to kill only one of my Venoms. Unfortunately for me, all the passengers perished with their vehicle.  However, his Crimson Hunter managed to immobilized my Voidraven. His shooting towards my Archon and Incubi however was a little more successful as he managed to kill off the Haemonculus and also 3 incubi. Luckily for me, they did not flee.

Seeing that I have a chance to make things hard for him, I decided to fire all my Venoms on one of the Jetbiker squads, killing the Warlock and also 3 jetbikers. His weakened biker squad failed their leadership test and started fleeing, but did not went off the board. I tried to gun down the aircraft with no avail and I decided that I need the Voidraven to live and thus I flew him off the board for a sneaky tactic.

I then tried to charge once more, and this time I managed to make it to the jetbiker squad.  I issued a challenge with my Archon, and to my surprise, he send in his Farseer to combat my own. Nonetheless the combat phase was quite odd, as we could not roll enough to do any significant damage to one another, with one Jetbiker and one Incubi being the casualties of the day.

Turn 5
Both combatants were evenly matched, and both of them knew why. Vespera was the more powerful and agile of the two, however Alathis was the more experienced and was assisted by his psychic gifts. Both their skills and abilities are such that both are unable to touch each other, and they both knew that if they were to achieve victory on this battlefield, one of them must perish under the blade of the other. However the Farseer was careless and for all his psychic ability, he was injured by Vespera's weapon.

"You are on borrowed time, Farseer. You better find aid less the venom takes over your body..." Vespera said coldly.
"If that is meant to scare me, you have a long way to go Archon."

Realizing that his only means of winning the game is in a very precarious situation, my opponent could only hope that he could rally his biker squad and rush them towards the objective on his side of the table. He managed to regrouped them and they went about and sit on their objective.

His shooting phase was not the one he was hoping for, as he only managed to bring down another venom rather than killing all of them in one turn. As for close combat......we are utterly horrible and we failed to even do anything.

In my turn my Voidraven returns, and managed to see the three jetbikes that were holding the objectives and with a fire volley, I managed to wipe them off and preventing him from taking the win. My Venoms managed to cause enough casualties on the Dark Reapers to break them and force them to run once more, and the passengers of my destroyed Venom went ahead and ran into his deployment zone.

In the close combat phase, I managed to wound his Farseer once, but alas his squad failed to break.

It was then that we rolled to see if the game goes on, and we get our turn 6.

Turn 6
Before they could continue on with their duel, they could hear a thundering sound that are familiar to to their ears; the descending roar of Space Marine drop pods.Looking upwards, both leaders realized that their time is up and their conflict with each other only served to let the Mon-keigh muster their forces to repel them. Both Alathis and Vespera looked at each other and despite not saying any words to each other, they both knew that in their current state they would perish. As reluctant as they come, both of them stopped their duel and walked away. Both had a bitter taste in their mouth, knowing that if they had continued on a little longer they would have known the victor and be the one who will reap the rewards of the Everlight.

Seeing that his chances of victory lies with his Wraithguard reaching his objective in time, and also freeing his jetbikes from the persistent Archon he moved his aircraft and other elements to gun down the remaining Venom and also Voidraven, while his Wraithguard make a run for it. His shooting phase brought down my last Venom and despite the twinlinking, his War Walker is unable to do anything. His regrouped Dark Reapers attempted to gun down the Voidraven, but he failed to do so.

The close combat phase was dismal once more, and we are stuck.

With the time not being on my side, I rushed a number of my troop to the objectives. My Warriors towards my deployment zone failed to do anything. My shooting against the Wraithguard was a little more successful than I thought it would be, managing to kill 2 out of 5 of them. In the end the other squad of Warriors charged the Dark Reapers, but they are utterly routed.

By this time, my opponent has First Blood while I have Linebreaker and with neither of us having the main objective, it all goes down to whoever gets Slay the Warlord. We rolled with all our lives to get that last secondary objective and.........

We failed to do anything to each other.

With that we wondered if there would be a next turn. However, when we rolled the dice, the dice gods decided that it is over.

Post-Game Thoughts
With the prize slipping away from her hands, Vespera could not help but to be utterly enraged by the turn of events. Her mood was poorly disguised as she sat on her throne upon the bridge of her flagship, The Venom's Intrigue.

Her minions on the bridge knew that to enraged her further is tantamount to a fate worse than death, for her fury would not allow them to have a simple death. Not one of them dared to even move a muscle. It as then that one of them received in incoming transmission.

"Who is it?" Vespera asked the communications officer.
"It is.......from an Eldar ship." Immediately, the helmsperson regretted his words. He should have said something else, but now his fate was sealed.
"Open the link." Vespera said calmly, surprising everyone on the bridge. Without any hesitation, the communications line was opened between the two Eldar.

To her surprise, the Farseer whom she was fighting moments ago is now on the screen. The Farseer removes his helm and immediately the pale, youthful complexion of the Eldar Farseer surprised her for she was expecting a withered old Eldar. He stared at her with his brilliant magenta eyes and combing his raven hair, he begins to speak.

"We are as different to each other as day is to the night, but as with difference there is always a sense of balance. We both had gone off to a rather bad start, but I am now here to propose something else; I seek an alliance."
"An alliance?" Vespera asked.
"Yes, we have different goals but our goals can be accomplished if we are willing to understand and work with each other. You have skills that I need, and I have skills that you need. You scratch my back, I will scratch yours. Of course, once we are done we could go on our separate ways. Deal or no deal?"
"I will contact you for further details." Vespera said, and she shuts the communications off.

Looks like she will have an unique resource she could utilize for the future.

Damn.....this game was fought all the way to the last second, and the rolls in this game was just ridiculous.

In this game, I have underestimated the capabilities of both the Warlocks and the Spiritseer, and I paid for it in the wrecks and craters of destroyed vehicles. The Dark Reapers were a tough lot to kill due to the Spiritseer and that damn Warlock making the squad essentially Assault Terminators with missiles. Taking out the Serpent was a god-sent for me, as that thing will kill all my vehicles senseless if given the opportunity. However, given the circumstances, I played to the best of my ability and took advantage of everything that I could taken advantage of. Nightshields proved to be a boon for all my games these days, and especially in this match as it prevented his jetbikes and Wraithguards from making themselves any useful even as I was playing within his deployment zone.

I also made the foolish mistake of trying to shoot the Dark Reapers instead of the Wraithguard that are out in the open, as I was a little too paranoid about their missiles. Should have cut down all his avenues of scoring before I kill off the Dark Reapers. Nonetheless, I knew that the Dark Reapers are almost impossible to kill once I found out that they have a 2+ armour save and also a 3+ cover save and those missiles are hard for me to ignore.

As for my opponent, I clearly believed that if he had just used his bikers a little more aggressively early on, he would have put me in a very tough situation. In addition, the War Walkers killing off the little squad of warriors on my objective is somewhat wasted as I believed that he could have killed another Venom and cause my anti-infantry firepower to be significantly reduced. Also I was wondering why he did not just take out his wraithguard and just let them sit there from the get go as he knows that the nightshields would render them almost useless to begin with.

A very intense game indeed, and this is the best kind of battle.
