Rose Funeral - Gates of Punishment

Genre: Melodic / Death Metal / Deathcore
Release Date: 2011

It seems everything that can happen to a band has happened to Cincinnati death dealers, Rose Funeral. Various lineup changes and a lengthy silence from the band after their last album "The Resting Sonata" finally gave way to the band releasing its latest album "Gates of Punishment" quite easily their best work to date and definitely one of the greatest metal albums released this year.

Legions of Ruination- The opening track gives a bit of a reminder that Rose Funeral havent strayed too far from their roots, it's got a dark opening followed by a few moments of musical rage, not the most original opening to an album ever but certainly Rose Funeral fas won't be dissapointed.

Grotesque Mutilation- This track begins the introduction into the somewhat new style that Rose Funeral has on "Gates of Punishment". The music is just as punishing and skilled as it was on previous releases, but there is a  much more prominent melodic death metal influence with amazing riffs and some very refreshing guitar solos along with drumming that pummels away behind the searing vocals that lyrically aren't far from the beaten path when it comes to Rose Funeral. As far as songs go, this is definitely a good example of what listeners can expect throughout the rest of the album.

Beyond The Entombed- Okay this is why I love this album! This song definitely is one of the many very high points on "Gates of Punishment" not only does it incorporate the ruthless shredding and musical ability that is displayed all over the record, there are also little symphonic peices included in this track that not only keep listeners listening but it also has the added effect of enhancing the feel of the song and the album as a whole giving it a bit of a more sinister sound than just the fury that the band has always so very well portrayed. This willingness to include an element not yet really heard in their music is what makes Rose Funeral a great band and "Gates of Punishment" a great album.

False Divine- Following the previous track, Rose Funeral return to doiug what they do best, slamming music that makes them a sheer joy to listen to. The song is very recognizable as Rose Funeral's work at the very least on their new recording. The song is quick paced and just as blistering as one would expect a song from Rose Funeral to be. Steve Tucker makes an appearance before the track closes, adding some vocal variety to the song and again, shows the band's ability to keep things interesting.

Arise Infernal Existence- Another battering song that shows Rose Funeral aren't letting up anytime soon, halfway through the record they keep true to form of extremely talented members and a very excellent understanding of song structure. The shortage of breakdowns is a bit more noticeable on this track and that can be either a good or bad thing depending on one's taste. Although breakdowns are present, Rose Funeral has learned to use that musical tool sparingly so as to not make their songs repetative.

Malignant Amour- And again here is an especially brilliant moment on an already brilliant album. The inclusiveness of symphonic instrumentals along with Kate Alexander's ethereal guest appearance along with the grinding music and already amazing vocals make this song a personal favorite on the album. Everything seems to have come together on this song to make a fantastic and very spooky song which is in no way a negative thing. The band may want to consider doing another song simmilar to this again, it's some seriously amazing work.

A Recreant Canticle- Theres something rather comforting that this band can make so many songs that do not much else but whack a listener over the head with a musical crowbar and not once manage fall into the trap of making songs that sound exactly like the others. It's still apparent that the members of this band are not only competent with their instruments, theyre amazingly talented. The music is amazing all around and each instrument complements the others. One would think that it would get old listening to songs like this nearing the end of the album would have gotten old but thanks to Rose Funerals amazing abilities, it is nowhere close to being old.

The Desolate Form- The Desolate Form brings out some of the angriest most aggresive lyrics on the album that of course are right at home with the brutal heavy music that will be very familiar to listeners at this point, this song seems most reminiscent of older Rose Funeral music having a few more breakdown moments than other songs have had and that's not a bad thing, it's a nice moment of nostalgia devoted fans will be happy to hear on this album that has shown the band evolving from its previous sound.

Entercism- This is a fun song, lyrically what seems to be demonic possesion and maybe its just this reveiwers opinion but it's an amusing title as opposed to the word excorcism. And of course this all layered over the impecable music that makes this song a jewel in an already amazing collection of songs.

Amidst Gehenna- Just to show they aren't finished, Rose Funeral start this song swinging on what may be the darkest most brooding aggressive song on the album. The hateful lyrics and the music that seems to be played with the sole intent of hammering listeners relentlessly and the vocals designed to tear into a listener's very essence, it's an evil evil and yet oh so good song that leaves a trail of musical battering in its wake.

Gates of Punishment- On the final, title song of "Gates of Punishment" brings all the elements from this album together to bring one final onslaught of music that will leave fans craving more. The song seems done when the classical interlude begins but as it ends, the band returns to remind listeners they are every bit as brutal at the end of the record as they were at the begining.

Rose Funeral are one of those bands that deserve to make it big. The latest offering by them further cements that fact as not only have they proven they can make brutal music with the best of them, but also are perfectly willing and able to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves, however breifly with something new. That challenge has definitely succeeded making "Gates of Punishment" an absolute pleasure to listen to for anyone interested in heavy music and also a precursor of amazing things to come from this group of absolutely wonderful musicians.

3. Gold Us
4. Priapism
5. The Satyr
6. Morning Qualm
7. Effluvium of Virulence
8. The Miscreant
9. Beloved Excreta
10. Opulence

Finally some more death metal from Quebec. Over the past several years, Quebec, has done nothing but impress me. The consistency in which solid bands come out of there is absolutely mind blowing. And Shades of Dusk is no exception. This album has not yet been released, but you can check out 'Refractory' and 'The Satyr' on their facebook page.
Below is some of their older material you can use as reference.

You can pre-order 'Squalor' here

The Mortis Sermon - The Overseer - Single 2011

Genre: Deathcore / Death Metal

1. The Overseer

Brand new single from "Raleigh's Finest" The Mortis Sermon. This is off of their upcoming EP The Overseer.

Cold Blooded Theory - The Overseers - 2011

Genre: Metalcore / Hardcore
Location: Glendale, Arizona

Tracklist:
1. Part 1: The Intervention
2. Charlie
3. Human Morality: Revised
4. Some People Age Backwards
5. Madison
6. Part 2: The Revival

Some good old fashioned metalcore mixed with some breakdowns and two steps. Not too much to write about this release, simply, because in my opinion, it's far too similar to a lot of other stuff out there. I'm in no way detracting from the quality of the release. Simply stating my opinion on this.
It's well executed metalcore, and I'm sure a lot of you will enjoy it.
I can't find a good enough youtube video to offer a preview, so just go check their facebook if you're dubious.
They are however only offering this release on iTunes.

Foreboding Ether - Beyond Conjecture - 2011

Genre: Death Metal / Tech / Progressive
Location: Margate, UK

Tracklist:
1. Fore20
2. Deadline
3. Tunabhuna
4. Conscious Altered
5. House of Cards
6. OD

Foreboding Ether is another newer band that I think is going to get a lot of popularity in the next little while. For a band that only started playing shows in April of 2010. These guys have it together. They have a solid mix of tech reminiscent of Necrophagist blended with the ever so popular off beat progressive riffs. Along with a solid death metal backing. This band has something for almost everyone.
Definitely a band to check out and keep your eye on.

Weighed In The Balance - EP - 2011

Genre: Metalcore / Hardcore
Location: Central New Jersey

Tracklist:
1. Who Can Blame The Believer
2. Severance
3. Years From Divine
4. A Fear of Imperfection

Not the absolute greatest production on this. However, they have a tight sound. There's clean vocals on the tracks, and that's definitely a strong point for this band. The cleans aren't whiny. They're solid. Anyone into "djenty" stuff with a hardcore/metalcore edge, should be into this.

Inception - Instrumental Demos

Genre: Progressive
Location: Hope Mills, North Carolina

Tracklist:
1. Hymn of the Fallen
2. Devastation to Us All
3. Shadows of Ruins
4. B.A.O.S.
5. Destroyer
6. Breaking All Ties
7. Juggernaut
8. Retribution

This is a full CD of instrumental deathcore/progressive tracks. The band did not want to physically use these, so they want to let other people use them for whatever.

*New CD coming out soon*

[INTERVIEW] Eddie of All Shall Perish - August 2011

Interview with Eddie of All Shall Perish.

So, you guys are coming up close to your "official" 10 year anniversary. How does that make you feel, and how have the past 10 years(or more) impacted you, and who you are as a person?

I have only been in the band for 6-7 years. I have become a drunk fuck. I only feel when I am on stage. The musicians shape the band not visa-versa. Just like anyone else 10 years is a long time so I bet you can assume that I have changed a lot in the last 10 years. Can I tell you how? No.

What was it like growing up? Have you always had that drive to play/write music? Or was that something that you kind of developed over time?

Growing up is growing up. Are we in therapy here? Well Dr. Phil, I am an entertainer I have always had the desire to entertain people. Music was just my calling.

If things with ALL SHALL PERISH hadn't gone the way they have, where would you be right now? What kind of career were you looking at prior to joining the band?

I would still be stripping for quarters down at the local jack shack. I had no career. Music isn't a career it's a way of life. We starve and kill ourselves to play. This is all I have and all I live for. There were never any other options for me.

What are some of the most difficult parts about being in a band? And how do you cope with these issues.

Being in a band is like being in a poly-amorous 5 way relationship. We have had people leave the relationship and people come in. You find the people you are happiest with and go for it. The truth comes out on the road and there it will stay.

According to multiple websites, your lyrical themes tend to gravitate towards; dejection, cynicism, death, societal struggles and many more things. Aside from the obvious, what influences your writing, and directs it more towards these themes?

Actually This Is Where It Ends is the only album I have ever written with negative connotations. I have always tried to keep a positive outlook when we write. Be it in our music or lyrics. The reality is life is ugly until you make it beautiful so we used to try to make our music just that...Beauty in the beast. Lyrically I aim to translate what the music is speaking. If the song is angry I talk about what makes me angry in the world. With so much drama in the LBC...

Do the bands you're listening to during the writing process affect your lyrics?

Yes, The bands you listen to should affect every aspect of your life. If not, you're not listening.

Do the bands you've been listening to have an impact on how you do your vocals? Or do you develop new techniques on your own, for yourself?

Every musician feeds off of another musician. When I choose my vocal patterns and voices I tend to go with the flow and it is later that I realize who influences me. I hope no one goes into music's writing process saying "I want to sound exactly like this." That calls for shitty music.

It seems to be a recurring trend lately, where every album has a guest appearance on it. Plan on hopping on that boat?

Track 11- The Death Plague featuring Alex Erian from Despised Icon. Glad you did your research huh? ;)

For the new release 'This Is Where It Ends', the iTunes exclusive edition came with a Spanish, bonus version of 'Royalty In Exile'. What made you want to do vocals for an ASP track in Spanish?

I am hispanic. Why not take a song we dig and make it a spanish tune for our spanish speaking fans? If I could speak other languages I would sing songs in said language. We have been talking about doing more songs in Spanish.

Going through your releases, which would you say "means the most to you"? Most memorable, difficult, easy, anything you can think back on and share with us.

I love all of our music. Every song we do is difficult for me because I choose to explore as much of my range as I can when I write. Every song

You guys just wrapped up the Mayhem Festival, What goes through your mind when you're on stage, seeing that many people singing your songs?

I don't think when I am on stage. To me, being up there, is like therapy. I emote every bit of my anger and hatred into that microphone. It is always a pleasure to see people feel our music throughout. Mayhem brought us to a lot of new faces so there weren't a lot of people singing along.

Does it bother you sometimes that people respond differently to seeing, or interacting with you? Or do people even do that?

Are you bothered by people being different? I am bothered by people acting the same. There's a different vibe and response to everyone you meet. I hate when people lie to themselves to attempt to gain my respect. I see through the bullshit.

Getting back to the band's 10 year anniversary, what do think the next 10 years will bring? Do you see yourself still doing this?

The next ten years will show our fans that every minute spent on All Shall Perish is worthwhile and meaningful not only to them but us.

Thank you very much for taking time out of your busy schedule to do this.
