Ingested "The Surreption" Review

Genre: Death Metal / Deathcore / Hardcore
Location: Manchester, UK

The phrase “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” has never and may never be more appropriate. Ingested’s sophomore album “The Surreption” does not fall far from the brutal tree that its predecessor “Surpassing the Boundaries of Human Suffering” came from. Ingested have again shown their brilliance at creating intensely brutal music and have also revealed a delightfully refreshing ability to create music that is true to their form with just the right amount of progress. In short, Ingested has moved forward an inch and in doing so, gained miles. There is no real discernable style changes or added instruments , though the incorporation of gang vocals on several tracks and the inclusion of guest vocals from talented members of Despised Icon and Martyr Defiled are nice surprises and certainly welcome additions. The opening track “Crowning The Abomination” certainly gets the point trying to be made that “The Surreption” has kept to form but has gained a little something, for want of a better term. The whole album has a bleak almost nihilistic feel to it without slowing or calming down. The guitars are still shredding, the bass is still blistering, the drums are still crushing, and the vocals are still shattering. Lyrically, there has been a massive transformation from merely brutal lyrics for brutality’s sake to a conceptually intense thought provoking journey. All told, “The Surreption” is truly exciting opportunity to watch a band mature in every way while not losing anything in the process that made them the band that earned them their loyal fans in the first place, and certainly all those listening to this album who aren’t fans will find themselves converted, those who already are, will not be disappointed.

Greg The Hero "Of Defiance" EP Review

Genre: Death Metal / Hardcore / Black Metal
Location: Iowa, US

Greg The Hero, a 6 piece death metal/hardcore/black metal act out of Iowa, has unleashed their latest effort, Of Defiance EP. And I will certainly give them an "A" for effort and execution! This EP will absolutely punch you in the face from start to finish. What is particularly refreshing is the unique blend of deathcore and melodic pieces throughout. This EP isn't just about brutality, although there is plenty of it! The dual vocalists battling it out, the guitar sweeps, blast beats, and even piano interludes all blend together to form this amazing EP.

1. Bryn Mawr - This track sets the tone of the entire album. The opening quote is from The Departed, although slowed down. The instruments start to fade up and disappear the quote finishes with "If you're faced with a loaded gun...what's the difference?". A single snare blast signals the start of the chaos. Blast beats and dissonance will fill your ears as the vocalists start. The heaviness absolutely does not let up. Breakdowns, harmonics, feedback, palm muting, crushing vocals, and triplets are all present. The song takes a turn when the piano kicks in, to be a little more melodic. A rhythmic build up leads up to the final breakdown, and the end of one hell of an opening track.

2. Northern Moon Final - This track starts drastically different from the first, but not in a bad way. The band starts to show their technical roots here as a whole. Don't worry, they still break it down, hard. Listen closely and you will hear the bass player grooving out; something you don't hear enough of from bands. The keyboard is more present in this song laying down textures and more piano. This song really takes a black metal turn the more it goes on, which is unexpected, but it fits.

3. Forging a Legacy - They left the melody on the previous track and just come out of the gates hard on this one. This song certainly solidifies their roots in deathcore, but that's not to say their other influences aren't present. It's hard to put into words, but the combination of black metal and deathcore is done in such a pleasing way. It's a short track, but they cram a lot of influences and styles in there.

4. White Elephant Holiday - The first couple seconds of this track remind me heavily of Dillinger Escape Plan. The drummer is really showing off in this track. It's business as usual until we hit an awesome, unexpected tempo change to slow it down. This song is just down and dirty. Nothing pretty about it, just the way I like it. The end of the track takes an interesting turn with almost angelic voices in the background, as it does a 180 and breaks it down.

5. Weight of the World - The final track on this EP leaves nothing behind. Everything is showcased here by the band. It's fast and it never lets up. You get crazy drumming, sweeps, keyboard textures, and much more packed into this song. The energy in this song is almost palpable. The keys really slow the last breakdown to a crawl as the final song on this EP comes to a close.

Take Charge - Pre Contact: The Extermination Theory Review

From: Tampa, Florida
Genre: Metal/Deathcore/Hardcore

Songs to Jam First: Flies, Cancer Garden, The Further

From the start this record grabs you by the balls and does not let go. It opens with "Flies", a driving and heavy track that imediately drops in with chugs and concise drumming that commands your attention. I'd like to note that drummer Ed Pena really puts the bar up on this record with his creative fills and flawless transitions, hard to believe this kid is so young. Hailing from central Florida Take Charge's"Pre Contact" is a well thought out masterpiece. Not to mention producer Kenny Gil's magic touches always seem to captivate his audiences. Anyhow, The record progressively moves forward with "The Second System", more of a post hardcore djent style track. The track highlights Jeff Wester's vast vocal range, where he uses more punk yells and traditional style vocals, but mixes in his death vocals as well. His vocals are most definitely on their A game at this point in Take Charge's history, and he is easily one of the best I've heard in awhile. The next song, "The Further" drops the ball with a very windy city heavy feel. While jamming this track,I've begun to notice that the riffs on this record are a lot chunkier and more technical compared to demos and previous tracks from this group. But my favorite thing, is that it's got a very traditional death structure, but with a super melodic ambiance that trails the entire album. At this point I approach "Cancer Garden".

This is my personal favorite off the record. It really highlights the guitarist's capabilities, as well as being more lyrically deep. The track has the most personal feel, but I feel it'is got the most combined in it to describe Take Charge best. And the record ends with "Accepting Insanity", easily the most heavy and traditional metal on the Album. What sticks out in this track is the Make Them Suffer style synthesizer and the choppy blast beats. Overall, this record is pure perfection and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to every minute. It completely took my perspective of good death metal to the cleaners, leaving my ears raped in the best way possible. I can't wait to see what this band comes out with in the future, and I will be keeping a close eye on this group. And after hearing this record, I suggest all of you readers do the same. It seems everything they touch turns to heavy gold, leaving my score at 10 out of 10 for this review. Let's hope they keep their Midas touch.
