Session 1 of The Black Mete

(Some spoilers from the Swords & Wizardry Quick Start by ChicagoWiz. I'll try to keep this short and punchy.)

Sunday's game ran from 1:00 to 6:45. We had some total newbs and a lot of time was spent on character generation. Mental note - pre-packaged equipment lists, next time! I should have pulled something off the blogosphere, but by the time I realized that, they were into it enough that I thought it best to just let them explore their options.

Jillena, my wife :) - Playing a Halfling Hero. This class draws some inspiration from Brave Halflings Halfling Adventurer and the LL Halfling. I'll post it. I don't use level limits and just couldn't bring myself to imagine a Halfling Fighting-man, who was unlimited in level. So, wanting to give the race some options, I made the Halfling Hero.

Sandra - A Human Paladin. She's never played before, except for one time in college, with a girl-friend, with neither one knowing what they were doing... (just to be clear, I'm talking about D&D.) She likes to read fantasy and has played some computer stuff.

Kevin - A Human Druid. (I made up some bs to allow the druid and paladin to adventure together. Probably unwise, but what the hell. We'll see how it goes.)

Darren - A Human MU.

Francis - A Halfling Cleric of Freyja (I wasn't going to let Halflings be clerics, but Francis really, really wanted to play a halfling and a cleric. When in doubt, I ask myself WWJRD? (What would Jeff Rients Do?) Francis has never played before, either. He's done the WoW thing and met my wife by playing Castle-age (don't know exactly what that is, but my wife is fairly sucked into it.)

Two of my players, Jillena and Sandra, are live. Francis is skyping in from Belgium. Darren and Kevin are skyping in together from Atlanta. Those latter two are planning on attending live, on occasion. Darren's my oldest and dearest friend, so he's willing to make the drive, every once in a while. Francis is certainly welcome to do the same, but a plane trip from Europe is a lot more to commit to than a 3 hr drive. :)

Aside from a 30 min. period of technical difficulties, the skype thing worked fine. It felt like playing D&D, so I'm good. My friend Lee was supposed to play, but his work commitments changed. I'd like to rustle up one more live player.

Two halflings. I'll be. No thieves. The Paladin is the only Fighter-type PC (the Halfling Hero attacks as a Cleric/Thief.) You'll notice I didn't list the PC's names. I was in such a hurry to finally get started, I forgot to write them down. Because I'm a softie, they used the old 4d6 drop the lowest, arrange to taste, method of char gen. It's been a while, since I've run a campaign, so I've got some rust to knock off!

The Campaign Begins! Welcome to The Black Mete!

I never start campaigns in a tavern. Never. I usually start with "Roll Inititative," and throw the players right into a combat situation. But, Sunday, they started in The Grinning Gryphon roadside Inn and Tavern in hex 0804.

I had them each roll 1d4. That was their starting gold, after picking their equipment. :) I also gave them a two-page player's handout, though most of the first page is taken-up with the map. This was a short intro to the milieu, which also contained some adventure hooks/opportunities.

I then informed them that they had 4 men-at-arms and 2 lackey's in their employ. The meat-shields earn 2 gp per day. The lackey's 1. Payday was five days away.

Kevin/Druid: "I say we fire them."

DM: "I wouldn't advise that."

So, they quickly took out the Player's Handout and actually read it, this time. They discussed some options. Jillena/Halfling Hero asked Bob, the Halfling proprietor of the Grinning Gryphon, if he knew of any money making opportunities. Bob mentioned he'd heard of several lumberjacks disappearing, from their camp, over the past week. The lumberjack's were pretty upset and maybe could use some help.

Darren/MU: "They're lumberjacks, though, so they're o.k." (Does anyone give out xp for the first Monty Python reference, in a campaign?)

The Lumberjack Camp

The LJ's weren't much help. 3 of their number had disappeared over the past week. No-one saw where they went. They just disappeared and never returned to camp. The foreman took up a collection from his crew and offered the PC's 25 gp's, to discover what happened and make sure it doesn't happen again. The party said they'd see what they could do (they've been watching Burn Notice, apparently.)

The Mushroom Forest

They decided to look around a bit and head south. Into a Mushroom Forest. They ran into two Pod-men and had their first battle. They overcame the weird creatures with little difficulty.

Attack in the Night

They crossed a thin, shallow river into the next hex, leaving the Mushrooms and decided to make camp. During the first watch, a group of 8 Goblins ran across their camp (wandering monster roll.) The Goblins served Tisha, a cleric of the Toad God. The leader of the Goblin scouting party had "gotten religion," to the point that he was daring enough to try and attack the mostly sleeping party (It was getting late and I wanted one more combat encounter, for their first session.)

The Goblin's got surprise on the party and a hail of spears, tore into the camp. Alas, they all missed. Melee, insued. The MU got off his Sleep spell, catching two, along with the Halfling Cleric (the cleric was in dire straights, badly wounded and probably had his life saved, here.) The MU also took a spear in the gut, getting knocked down to -1 HP (-10 is death.)

Two of the Goblins escaped. The Druid dispatched the two sleeping ones, while the Paladin was elswhere engaged. One of the goblins got surrounded by enemies, couldn't run and somehow managed to get himself killed by friendly spear-fire. (Rolled a 1.)

A third Goblin tried to escape but was captured. The Halfling Hero found him hiding behind a tree, shivering in fear. (I showed them the goblin picture in the LL rulebook. He looks so cute!)

The Party's First Prisoner!

So, they took Horace the Goblin back to camp, where he quickly spilled every bean he knew of. They were hired by Tisha, a cleric of the Toad-god, who plans on "Becoming an Evil Overlord," (the goblin made quotation marks with his hands, while speaking.) The party hadn't been aware of the existence of the S&W Quick Start dungeon,

Horace agreed to take them to the Dungeon. That was where we ended the session. We're playing again, this coming Sunday and taking the one after that off. The plan is to play three Sundays out of every four, from about 1:00 to 6:30.

Stuff You Guys Made That I Used in Yesterday's Game

LL/AEC forms the backbone of the rulings I'm using. Here's a list of the other stuff that got used, yesterday.

2. The Unexpurgated Dragon Generator by E. G. Palmer. (They've only heard of the dragon.)

3. Labyrinth Lord Landscape Character Sheet by Dyson Logos.

(Of course, my wife, the programmer, made herself an Excel character sheet. You should see her 3.5 excel sheet, custom made for her Sorceress, with formulas to recalculate everything when she enters a higher Character Level # into the sheet.)

4. The Deck O' Stuff by Jeff Rients from FO! #5.

(Kevin, who's playing a Druid, got a whistle. He asked if it was a regular whistle, or a dog whistle. The d6 told us it was a dog whistle.)

6. The Swords & Wizardry Core Rules Quick Start by ChicagoWiz.

(A captured goblin is leading them to this dungeon, as of the end of the session. I would say more, but a player might read this.)

OSR News from the Underdark Gazette - Sunday, March 27, 2011

Not much in the way of new releases, this week. Considering how busy the past couple of months have been, we were due for a break, I guess. But, there's still a lot of News and Activity going on, as you can see! Sorry the News was so late, today. I was playing D&D. :)

A Book of Exalted Deeds

The OSR Links to Wisdom wikipage, a repository for everyone's favorite Gaming Goodness, from the OSR Blogoverse, went live this week. Thanks to The Jovial Priest, Alex Schroeder, Jeff Rients, Zak Sabbath and everyone else, working to build and promote this fantastic resource! I noticed someone added my Guide to Free OSR Resources, which means I need to get my ass in gear and update the thing. I haven't had the time this weekend to do very much, but I did add my own favorite piece of OSR Wisdom: How to Awesome-Up Your Players by Jeff Rients. If you need some more info on the wiki, I'll let The Jovial Priest fill you in. Daddy Grognard has some info on a competition to design a logo, for the wiki. Since there's not one, yet, I'm gonna put a pic up by Mr. Roslof, to accompany this section.

The Swords & Wizardry Creative Guild

I really dig the picture!  A word from Matt Finch:
To join the SWCG, email me at:

mythmere at yahoo (dot) com!
The Swords & Wizardry Creative Guild is a resource organization for publishers, for bloggers, and for Referees who want to run convention or demo games for Swords & Wizardry and/or Original D&D. At first, the main benefit to joining will be a periodic e-zine with information about conventions, calls for playtesters from the various Swords & Wizardry publishers, and other resources for the production/promotion side of things that aren't purely about the gaming table. There will probably be some freebies, discounts, and other stuff involved at some point, too.
The Old School Renaissance Group Blog

And now, a word from Mr. Browning:
Firstly, I've started up an Old School Renaissance Group blog! This blog will have information concerning the OSRG booth at Gen Con. I'm very excited to be part of helping bring the OSR to GenCon and I thought a centralized location of information would best serve all of us. So drop by and subscribe to the blog to keep up-to-date about what's going on with the OSRG at Gen Con.
Secondly, Expeditious Retreat Press is looking for more tourney judges at our 1e Gen Con tourney this year featuring the Advanced AdventureThe Obsidian Sands of Syncrates. We've got two GMs so far, but I'd love to have more, as there always seems to be more players wanting to play 1e at Gen Con than we've got GMs. Our tourney GMs get a free signed copy of the tourney adventure along with an additional free copy of an Advanced Adventure of their choice that they can pick up from the Old School Renaissance Group booth.
Thirdly, here's a deal if you're interested in running any other of our Advanced Adventures at Gen Con 2011. Let me know which Advanced Adventure your running and I'll send you a free PDF copy of that Advanced Adventure and we'll also give you a signed copy of the Gen Con 2011 tourney adventure, The Obsidian Sands of Syncrates when you drop by the Old School Renaissance Group booth at Gen Con.
And Another Word, While We're Visiting Mr. Browning...
8th Anniversary - 50% off all our PDFs!
8 years ago today, Suzi and I officially started this crazy rpg publishing business by releasing our first PDF, A Magical Medieval Society: Western Europe. Throughout the next 8 years we've managed to create over 180 PDFs supporting 1e, 3e, 4e, Pathfinder, and last year we created our own game and system, Sorcery & Super Science. It's hard to express how much I love what I do. I'm immensely satisfied to be able to pursue what I enjoy as a vocation.
So, until the end of March, we've put all our PDFs for sale for 50% off! It's our thanks to all of you for all of your support throughout the years. You can buy them at Your Games Now, Rpgnow, E23, and Paizo.
Thank You!
Random Tables! Prizes! Random Table Prizes!!!

And now, a word from Ian of Magicians Manse and Calithena of Fight On!:
Fight On! and Magician’s Manse are Proud to Announce -A Contest for Fantasy Gaming Tables!
Entry Deadline: May 31, 2011
Send your random tables via email with the header TABLES to tombowings at gmail dot com!
Rules: Maximum 3 tables per entrant, OR 2 tables per entrant if either or both of them are ‘multiple tables’ tables (e.g. a connected set of dungeon or wilderness tables).
For some gamers, there is nothing – not even a good ruleset – that beats a good collection of random tables. So we’ve decided to run a contest to put one together!

By submitting your table, you give us permission to re-print that table in the upcoming Fight On! Big Book of Tables (or whatever we eventually decide to call it). You continue to own your own table and all rights to it other than our right to publish it in various iterations of that book and may re-use or re-publish it elsewhere as you see fit. Likewise, tables you have already published elsewhere may be submitted to this contest so long as you still have the rights to them to give to us to publish in this way.
We are looking for overall quality, game-usability, creativity, better mousetraps, and/or gonzo! Our Judges include S. John Ross, Jeff Rients, Tim Kask, Paul Czege, and Ian Burns, as well as Ignatius Umlaut of Fight On!
Prizes!
Grand Prize: 1 Roll on the Gold Table, 1 Roll on the Gems & Jewelry Table, 1 Roll on the Magic Items Table, a Trade Paperback Copy of Roll the Bones, and a set of Dwarven Metal Dice provided by DEI Games (deigames.com)
Second Prize: 1 Roll on the Gold Table, 1 Roll on the Gems & Jewelry Table, and 1 Roll on the Magic Items Table
Third Prize: 1 Roll on each of any Two Different Tables Below (your pick)
First Honorable Mention: 1 Roll on the Gems and Jewelry Table or the Magic Table (your pick). All prizes except FHM guaranteed; we will use this category for entries that were extremely painful to exclude from the top three.
Honorable Mention: All honorable mentions and all prizewinners above will receive a free PDF copy of the Fight On! Big Book of Tables (when it comes out) and a free PDF of a randomly determined issue of Fight On! magazine! And we intend to give Honorable Mention to ALL submitted tables meant for eventual inclusion in the Big Book of Tables, so there will be a lot of these prizes to go around!

We finally found out who this Karina person is! A Free PDF compilation from all three of Mr. Raggi's contests, can be found at this post.

And some pre-order info from Mr. Raggi:
Freebies When You Pre-Order Grindhouse + Vornheim
Vornheim: The Complete City Kit has charts on the covers (and one on an inside cover). You roll dice on the cover and read where they drop. It's cool.
If you pre-order Grindhouse + Vornheim, you'll get those three charts on a double-sided A3 sheet. Two of the charts will be twice the size as on the physical Vornheim book, and one chart will be four times as large.
But wait! There's More!
The first 100 people to pre-order Grindhouse + Vornheim get an extra copy of the Rules and Magic book at no extra cost.
That's a 168 page perfect-bound book that includes an 8-page full color glossy section. No, it won't fit in the box with all the other stuff, but now you're just being picky. :P

Tempted yet?
A Special Thanks to ChicagoWiz and Tenkar for Pointing Out Something I Missed

Fire in the Jungle by Dustin Brandt.  Art by Rommel Joson and Edbon Sevilleno. $4.70 for Print & PDF combo. PDF only $2.15. 16 pages.
A ready-to-go jungle adventure or a toolkit for creating your own jungle setting. This supplement contains:
  • A brief history of the jungle’s troubled past and the natives who have survived there.
  • A color judge’s map of the jungle with dozens of described locations to explore.
  • A color player map to give the player’s a vague understanding of the shape of the jungle.
  • A comprehensive Jungle Event System that reflects the harsh reality and wondrous excitement of journeying through this jungle.
  • The Ant Tunnel Exploration System provides a framework for running adventures in these infinite, living tunnels.
  • The Tomb of the Monkey God. A dungeon module with an Escalation mechanic that ratchets up the tension the longer the PCs remain inside the tomb. Unique, overlapping color map of this four-level tomb.
  • Plus a variety of monsters, NPCs, hirelings, magic items, etc.
  • And, of course, the cover art by Rommel Joson and the back cover art by Edbon Sevilleno.
Because the back cover art shows bare breasts, buyers may be required to mark the box at Magcloud that allows them to purchase “Restricted Content”. It is packaged in a sturdy, clear plastic bag with the shipping label covering the nudity on back. You postal worker may fold it when putting it into your mailbox, like mine did, but I discovered that it smooths out quickly and completely.

Again, I don't Usually Report on Upcoming Products, But...

Isn't this just the coolest damn cover? The Stand-alone Print cover for Rob Conley's Blackmarsh! Here, Mr. Conley is referring to both the Delving Deeper version and the Stand-alone, pictured on the left:
Both will digest size (5.5" by 8.5") books. The Boxed set version will be 24 pages digest (6 folded sheets). The print version will have some extra pages to include the main map in the book.
RPGNow only has perfect binding so in addition to selling there I will continue to sell at Lulu and offer a saddle back (staple) bound option. Along with that have a parchment cover option. The disadvantage of Lulu will be that you have to download the PDF and the word doc from the Bat in the Attic website. Still working on pricing for print but it will be very easy on the budget.
Very, very nice, Mr. Conley!

Holy, Freakin' Toledo!!!

Welcome to the Black Mete!

I decided I wanted to make something different for the new campaign and wanted to do a black & white map. And since I've been meaning to make my own map icons and GIMP map template, I quickly found myself sucked into the project.

The Black Mete Map by James A. Smith is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License.

Download link in my files section, or here.

If you guys like and can use the Map Icons, I'll release them under the  Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License, along with the GIMP template. Once I'm finished. I have a few more to do and I still need to make the color set. The actual hex graph is the only thing I didn't make and comes from a Public Domain source

If anyone knows the easy way, for us non-programmers to create number labels, I would appreciate the info. I ended up doing it hex by hex. :)

Reviews: Kingmaker by Eric Jones Ludibrium Games

Kingmaker by Eric Jones. Art by Eric Jones. Ludibrium Games. Available in PDF for $2.95. 18 pages.
"Tragedy has fallen on the Kingdom of Ambarge-the King is dead; long live the King! But the kingdom's woes have only just begun, for the crown prince, the King's sole heir, is nowhere to be found. The fate of their kingdom rests on the deeds of a handful of wayward pilgrims that walk a solitary road in a remote land."
From the intro:
To play this module requires that you own an original edition or retro-clone fantasy role-playing game such as Labyrinth Lord™ or OSRIC™.

Eric sent me copies of the three Ludibrium Games modules to review, after Kingmaker was released. I'm doing Kingmaker first, so let's get started.

Let's get the production values out of the way, first. They're very nice. I noticed no typos. Double columned text. Some pleasing B&W illustrations from the author. There are no maps, but some cut-out tokens are given, for those who want to use a battle-mat. As several NPC's might be involved in fighting on both sides, the DM might find these to be very handy, unless they're used to running combats involving 20 - 25 participants, without such aids. The layout is appealing, overall. The cover is fairly representative of what you should expect.

It's always tough writing reviews, as I strive to give away as little as possible, while still giving my readers an adequate idea of what the module is about.

Kingmaker begins, for the characters, when they're hired to escort a caravan. From the blurb, you might can guess who's hiding in that caravan and that some bad guys, will be attacking said caravan.

The journey and action takes place on the open road. As mentioned, no map is provided. Details like the length of the journey, etc., are left to the DM. It's just the open road, with a town, somewhere, the destination. There's nothing wrong with leaving those details up to the DM and in fact, it's often a virtue.

But...

The adventure is for 2-8 characters of 1st level. If you have a small party, the shortfall is made up for with some red-shirts hired by the caravan master. There are some other leveled NPC's with the caravan as well.

The set-up is very convenient, with the Heir's mother casting as a MU, of significantly higher level than the PC's. She won't cast anything, except in extremis, so as not to give herself away. She has an opposite number, a witch casting at a level comparable to herself. The witch let's her mercenaries and servants do her dirty work, throughout the adventure. From my reading of the text, she won't become involved in combat directly, unless the PC's track her sorry ass down.

Yeah.

Not taking the Heir's mother into account, the PC's & Co. are pretty evenly matched against the witch's forces. So, there's a damn good chance that Mommy MU is going to have to take action, upstaging the hell out of the PC's, in the process. I'd recommend dumping her at the get-go, or, if there's no MU PC, bringing her down to 1st level.

There's potential for intrigue, ideas for double-crosses, etc. Some interesting Scheduled events, one of which, unconnected with the main course of events, seems to be provided solely for the purpose of giving fate a chance to off the heir, thus ending the adventure. I kind of liked that. It tickled my sense of whimsy.

Other Scheduled events are tied directly into the main struggle. Some Triggered events, help move things along and detail how certain NPC's will react to the current state of affairs, as things unfold.

Some stuff you'd probably like and use, some you would replace or tweak, like any other module. There're Details of NPC's, their personality and motivations, etc. Much of this could have done with tighter editing. There's dressing, more than I would care for.

The epilogue is about a page of various follow-up ideas and "what will happen later, if..." sort of stuff. There's a new magic-item, which gives the opportunity for some interesting developments. A new monster and a new spell. I like the new monster and magic item. The spell was ok.

Aside from the "Guardian Angel" issue, this is the problem with Kingmaker:

"...they're hired to escort a caravan. From the blurb, you might can guess who's hiding in that caravan and that some bad guys, will be attacking said caravan."

"The journey and action takes place on the open road. As mentioned, no map is provided. Details like the length of the journey, etc., are left to the DM."

"...the shortfall is made up for with some red-shirts hired by the caravan master. There are some other leveled NPC's with the caravan as well."

"...Heir's mother casting as a MU, of significantly higher level than the PC's. She won't cast anything, except in extremis."

"...opposite number, a witch casting at a level comparable to herself. The witch let's her mercenaries and servants do her dirty work, throughout the adventure."

There's just not much more meat than that in the module itself. In "giving my readers an adequate idea of what the module is about," I've given you just about everything but the potatoes and garnishing. I like some of Eric's "Potatoes."  As mentioned above, if I were running Kingmaker, some of his ideas I would use and some I wouldn't. Par for the course, with most modules. But there's too much hand-holding, too much verbiage and just not nearly enough of the sort of time-saving material I'm looking for in a module and way too much of the sort of thing I would think of myself, given the initial set-up.

I could take the basic idea as presented in this review and run it on the fly, without recourse to the module and be no worse for that, in any way. And there's not enough meat to recommend your purchasing this for purposes of adaptation and general design yoinkage. And while there were some ideas I liked, not enough that I would purchase the module, to read them.

Given the above issues, I don't recommend Kingmaker.

OSR News from the Underdark Gazette - Sunday, March 20, 2011

First, A Word from Matt Finch

From Mythmere's blog:
Free Module - Japan Relief
I am posting up a free module on lulu.com, with the request that if you download it, you also donate at least $1 to disaster relief in Japan. This page on yahoo.com contains links to various organizations that can take donations. It's just on the honor system.
Back to the gaming side, though:
The module is by Alphonso Warden - I bought the manuscript from Alphonso together with the one for The Nameless City, and it is usable as a prequel to Nameless City. It's 17 pages long (10 text pages, title page, intro page, 3 map/handout pages, and 2 pages about Swords & Wizardry). The art is by John Bingham, as with The Nameless City, and I did the maps.
The Last Priest of Sebek by Alphonso Warden. Art by Johnathan Bingham. Cartography by Matt Finch. Mythmere Games.
Free module for those who donate $1 or more to disaster relief for Japan. It's on the honor system. The module is for characters level 7-10 and is for Swords & Wizardry and similar games (OSRIC, AD&D, OD&D, etc). Description: The great river of Kemet ran dry decades ago, leaving the land a barren desert, helpless prey to Hittite invaders. Rumors in the oasis camps tell of a strange marshland in the middle of the desert, a fearful place somehow linked to the death of the river. A brave party of adventurers prepares to mount an expedition to this legendary place, seeking treasure and perhaps to discover the truth of the rumors. And the truth can kill ...

Books! I Love Books!

Tome of Tomes - Volume One by Joseph Browning. Expeditious Retreat Press. Available in PDF for $3.00. 18 pages.
Books in fantasy games have always been sources of mystery. We're all familiar with the sight of the magic user's eyes lighting up like a 5-year-old at Christmas when one is found. This work provides 100 tomes for your gaming pleasure, ranging from the magical to the mundane, from the common to the unique. Never again will you be at a loss to describe that recently found libram.
Tome of Tomes is a compilation of books that could be found on a sage's shelf or on the shelves of a city library. Each tome is described and classified according to field of study and special knowledge category (if applicable).
Goblinoid Games Let's the Dogs Out

Dogs in the Dungeon by Daniel Proctor. Art by Steve Zieser. Goblinoid Games. Available in PDF for $1.50. 4 pages.
This article presents new optional rules for using dogs in the dungeon as useful companions for the Labyrinth LordTM rules set, and is usable with other basic or advanced FRPGs. In addition to new rules for using dogs, new war dogs, scenthounds, waterhounds, sighthounds, and two new exotic dog types are detailed to add variety to the kinds of dogs that may be employed by PCs.
This article refers to the Labyrinth Lord core rules and the Advanced Edition Companion, both of which are available at RPGnow and the Goblinoid Games website. Free no-art versions are available as well.
I'm gonna have to get this! I keep picturing a pack of tough-looking bulldogs in studded leather barding, attacking my PC's.

And Now, a Word from LotFP!

From Mr. Raggi's blog:
Grindhouse Edition Giveaway Contest! Who is Karina?
I just realized I had one space left for my allotted giveaways... and now I figured out what the contest should be to determine who gets it!
I just received this email:
Greetings(!|)
Nice to meet you.
My name is Karina, me of 27 years.
I search for the man for serious relations.
As I search for a long time already for the significant other.
Obviously this Karina is somehow Weird!
Here's the contest:
Write this NPC up. Who is Karina? Where does she come from? What are her stats and unique abilities? Why is she searching for the man, and what sort of serious relations does she mean? And how does all this involve the PCs?
Submit the entry that impresses me the most (with or without answering those questions... that's a rough guide, not a list of requirements) and you win.
Conditions:
  • The writeup you submit is your own original work that has not previously appeared in print or on the web.
  • By submitting, you give permission for me to release it in an Open Game Content document.
  • You need to be 18+ years old to enter.
Submit your entry to lotfp@lotfp.com.
The creator of the winning writeup will get a complimentary copy of the Grindhouse box. All entries (that I don't think are utter crap, anyway) will be organized into a PDF to be freely distributed, with all items being Open Game Content.
If you do not include a real name to be credited I assume you are OK with not being individually credited - I'd really rather not list internet handles.
Submit your entry before Wednesday March 23 11:59pm Finnish time.

Clone Spotlight: Basic Fantasy

D'oh! Double D'oh!

A few weeks ago, Dan of Sword & Board put out his Sword & Board: A Basic Fantasy Companion.  "Cool! I haven't checked out the Basic Fantasy website in a long time. Let's see what they've been up to!"

"I haven't checked out the Basic Fantasy website in a long time... D'oh!"

Sometime before I started doing the news, Basic Fantasy fell off my radar. But Chris Gonnerman and his associates have been quite industrious and there's a ton of support material available for Free Download with frequent updates being made to the BF Downloads page.

So, I determined to start reporting on Basic Fantasy a couple of weeks ago. And, since I didn't make a note of it and there's just not much buzz about the game on the blogs and forums I frequent, promptly forgot. D'oh, Dammit! D'oh!!!

Basic Fantasy is available as a Free Download, or may be purchased in print: $21.98 for the HC, $9.48 for the Perfectbound and $10.98 for the Coil Bound.  159 pages.
The Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game is a rules-light game system based loosely on the d20 SRD v3.5, heavily rewritten with inspiration from early RPG game systems. It is suitable for those who are fans of "old-school" game mechanics. Basic Fantasy RPG is simple enough for children in perhaps second or third grade to play, yet still has enough depth for adults as well.
There's a ton of PDF support material, available for Free. The only other item currently available in print is:

Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign by Chris Gonnerman. Available as a Free PDF or in print for $7.30. 72 pages.
Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign is a campaign module (a group of connected adventures) for the Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game. This module is intended for 2 to 8 beginning (1st level) player characters, and furthermore is suitable for beginning players as well. This campaign module includes: The Western Lands: A briefly sketched campaign area; Morgansfort: A detailed "home base" for an adventuring party; The Old Island Fortress: A two level dungeon suitable for beginning adventurers; The Nameless Dungeon: A tough three level dungeon; and The Cave of the Unknown: A dungeon controlled by an evil magic-user.
Many of the other items are released in an Under Construction version and if you haven't checked in a while, JN1: The Chaotic Caves, JN2: Monkey Island, and BF2: Fortress, Tomb and Tower have all been recently updated. Several smaller items, like character sheets, new classes, etc., have also been added recently.

Chris & Co have done some impressive work, here and if you haven't checked out Basic Fantasy, it's well worth your time to visit the site. Whatever your favorite version of the coolest game in the world is, there's plenty of material to delight and interest Old School Gamers!

Time to Check in with Dyson Logos!

Reposted from goblinoidgames.com:
This Week at a Character for Every Game:
Posted another 7 articles this week (post-a-day-2011 continues unabated) - and here are the OSR-relevant highlights for those of you who don't want to read about World of Darkness mummies and XCrawl DJs.

  • Ochre Rock - a map and encounter from my most recent Labyrinth Lord / AEC campaign
  • Strange Stones - d12 table to determine the nature of those standing stones you have just stumbled across
  • Reskinning Dragons - Making dragons unique by tweaking a little thing here or there.
  • Blog Birthday Retrospective - thoughts on 2 years of A Character For Every Game
And rumour has it that Dyson's Dodecahedron Issue 3 will be out sometime this week.
The Rumour is True!

Dyson's Dedecahedron #3 by Dyson Logos. Available as a Free PDF Download. 12 pages.
Dyson’s Dodecahedron Issue 3 is a 12-page PDF of material for and from my B/X D&D games culled from the pages of this blog. This issue is centred around rules and material to help bring back that “sense of wonder” by twisting concepts and changing what the players should expect from the game.
Greyhawk Fun!

mortellan of Greyhawkery has a new W.O.G. comic up! GH Comic #304: Unwanted Advice From Humanoids Day.

More Gaming Goodness is On the Way!

David Macauley and Nicolas Dessaux have started an RPG company: Frightful Hobgoblin. You may know these gentlemen better as Austrodavicus and Snorri. Congratulations to David and Nicolas on your new publishing venture!

Old School Collaboration!

Ian of Magician's Manse is kicking-off a community project: Book of Vile Randomness:
As I briefly mentioned before, I've decided to compile a booklet of random tables created by the Old School community in the same line of thinking as James M's Petty Gods. The working title is Book of Vile Randomness, suggested by DungeonDevil on the ODD74 forum.
The booklet will be released under the Open Gaming License as free PDF. What I need from you all is random tables for submission and to help spread interest by word of mouth [word of blog?]. I know quite a few of you post random tables a little bit more than occasionally, so I'm expecting a decent turnout.
The deadline for submission is May 1, 2011 and there will be no compensation beyond a free PDF.
See Ian's original post for more details.
