MORGAN AGREN - CONUNDRUM

"Conundrum", the documentary that takes a closer look at Morgan Agren's musical world arrived at the United Mutations headquarters earlier this week. Actually, thanks to my participation in the kickstarter project, I even received a signed copy. Nice.
The movie itself, subtitled A Percussive Misadventure, shows Morgan Agren in his favorite environment : drumming.

A lot of contemporary musicians (Mike Keneally, Joe Travers and Dweezil Zappa to name a few) have nice things to say about Morgan Agren. There's even some footage from the Mats / Morgan appearance at one of the 1988 Zappa concerts.

I like it. It's funny and informative at the same time.

ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA IN GHENT 2013 11 08

Zappa Plays Zappa, the Ghent concert.

There's nothing like a fine concert to start the weekend.

Last Friday, the Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa band landed at 'De Vooruit' in Ghent. The only disadvantage of a Friday concert is that the biggest part of Belgium turns into one gigantic traffic jam every Friday. We knew, so we arrived well in advance.

As for the concert, it was great. The band played for almost three hours (not counting the 20-minute break). They started with the complete "Roxy" album and continued with a bunch of great songs, including the fabulous 'I Come From Nowhere'.
The band seemed very relaxed and it showed in the performance. One word: fabulous. Did I mention that there was some audience participation as well? People on stage, dancing to the Be-Bop Tango.
I loved it.

The concert ended with 'Muffin Man', and Dweezil sneaked in the intro of another classic in his guitar solo. Now that's what we want to hear!! Yes, humour does belong in music.

ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA "ROXY AND ELSEWHERE" TOUR

Hello Friends,

The countdown is on! We are only days away from departure for the extended "Roxy & Elsewhere" tour. The "Elsewhere" portion is taking us on a return trip through Canada and the UK. Plus some far-reaching European cities like Helsinki and a new stop in Estonia!

So much of the material on the "Roxy" has a greasy layer of funk and groove making it one of the most enjoyable records to listen and certainly some of the most fun music to play live on stage. Come and do your part in "The Be-Bop Tango!"

Alongside the "Roxy" I have compiled a wildly varied assortment of other tunes spanning FZ's career for us to sprinkle in to the set. We will be premiering tunes we have never played before including the "Orchestral Favorites" arrangement of "The Duke Of Prunes." It's replete with gobs of feedback-laden guitar.

Stay tuned for a big announcement on how to enter yourself in an upcoming contest that could win you the opportunity to see a Zappa Plays Zappa "Roxy" show and possibly win you a Gibson Frank Zappa Roxy SG!

I look forward to seeing you on the road!

THE EXTREME MUSIC LIBRARY

I can't really tell you what the Extreme Music Library is about.
I think they offer music to professionals, like movie makers or companies who make advertisments.
Check out their website and be amazed:
www.extrememusic.com

Some of these compositions (or maybe even all of them) are also available on promotional CDs.
And now the fun part kicks in: Dweezil Zappa contributed a number of pieces to the Extreme Music Library, and these have been released on a number of CDs.

Data, or at least some of it, has been added to the United Mutations Archives.

DARK SIDE OF THE MOON

It's been 40 years since Pink Floyd released "Dark Side Of The Moon".
Over at the Russian Federation, someone at the Lilith record label must have noticed this as well, as they are releasing three tribute albums.
I've only seen pictures of these, but I do like the concept: clear / coloured vinyl albums that also offer the music on CD. The CD fits in as if it were the album's label. Looks nice.

All three albums feature Adrian Belew, who once played with Frank Zappa, and one of them has Dweezil Zappa strumming his guitar on one track.

ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA ROXY & ELSEWHERE TOURDATES

ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA BRINGING ROXY & ELSEWHERE TO LIFE AT THE ROXY
(AND ELSEWHERE)

Zappa Plays Zappa, the Grammy(r) winning group that has made and recreated history performing the music of Frank Zappa, is set to embark on an epic musical trek across the US, Canada and Europe celebrating the classic Frank Zappa album, Roxy & Elsewhere. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of that pivotal Zappa fan favorite, the entirety of its repertoire -- including the provocative rhythms of "Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?" "Echidna's Arf (Of You)" and Be-Bop Tango (of the Old Jazzmen's Church)" will be performed Live!

Since 2006, Dweezil Zappa has led his highly acclaimed group through more than 500 performances worldwide and over 275 compositions spanning the breadth of his father's deep catalog. "I think my father's music deserves the chance to be discovered by a contemporary audience. His creativity and discipline is inspirational. Since generation X has apparently evolved beyond generation Y, perhaps we've reached generation Z. I think this is an appropriate time and place to inherit and adopt Frank Zappa as the musical figure head for Generation Z. Many facets of his music are bold and unconventional and it feels to me like it's from the future. Generation Z should be bold and unconventional"

Beginning this September, Zappa Plays Zappa will hit the road premiering songs that have not been performed on previous tours and cutting its teeth on additional surprise material. "The Roxy & Elsewhere album has always been one of my favorites and I'm excited to play it top to bottom. It has a great balance of musical styles and showcases some of the funkiest grooves and most devilishly frenetic instrumental passages my father ever composed."

Navigating the musical twists and turns of Frank Zappa's Music onstage isn't the only attraction on offer for the upcoming tour. As a bonus to the tour, a 90 minute personalized guitar instruction session from Dweezil's annual musical bootcamp, Dweezilla, will be offered as a separate ticket in the afternoon before sound check in every city. Players of all skill levels are welcome to attend. "I really enjoy sharing musical ideas and improvisational strategies with people. In these classes we discuss technique and application as our main topics. People will also get a chance to have a close up look at the newly released Frank Zappa Roxy SG made by Gibson Guitars," notes Zappa.

Certain to be among the tour's highlights are performances at iconic venues that resonate with Zappa history. Honoring the long-standing tradition in New York City Dweezil will stand in the same place Frank Zappa often stood on Halloween at the Beacon.

Auspiciously paying homage to Roxy & Elsewhere, Dweezil and his bandmates will perform at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood, exactly 40 years to the day of Frank Zappa's Performances at the Roxy in December, 1973.
