Extraordinary Individuals

Marvellous Men- being an examination of metal miniatures suitable for wargames and dioramas, depicting brave fighting men and also some scurilous rogues and villains- Compiled by Jakar Nilson

Concerning brave Captains
Our age hath made known
For all men to honour,
One standeth alone,
Of whom, o'er both oceans,
Both peoples may say:
"Our realm is diminished
With Great-Heart away."

Steam Warfare

Steam Warfare is a steam punk-themed objective based team deathmatch mod for Unreal Tournament 2004. I worked on Team Rock Lobster with two artists, three programmers, and three other level designers over a development cycle of three months. For this project I served as a level designer and was primarily in charge of the gameplay mechanics design and early documentation phases. For the final game, I completed one level of the four levels and over ten pieces of environmental static meshes

Neo Steam - MMORPG

Now, before you get all excited, as I did - there are two cautions about the new MMORPG, Neo Steam. Firstly, it’s a Korean game, though there is a Japanese version of it - so unless you’re really rather good at either of those languages, be prepared to be as baffled as I was when faced with what I believed was the sign-up screen. Secondly, this isn’t a ‘realistic’ Steampunk game - the elven ears are as pointy as they get, the tiger men are bristling with claws and the wolf men are probably as spikey. And there are random cute things too - there always are. So, you can consider this to be a very, well, Korean MMORPG - graphically it’s very very Korean.

The Sidney Street Siege

"Police Sergeant Bentley knocked at the door. It was opened, Bentley went in. After a few seconds there was a blaze of a revolver, flashes and shots. A whole gang of people [probably only four] raced out except for one man who took cover. There was a furious struggle, with the [unarmed] police going for their men even as they were being hit again and again by bullets. One member of the gang shot another by mistake, and at this they ran for the entrance to the street, dragging their wounded comrade with them, while injured and dying policemen were helped by the first people to come out of the surrounding houses.

"Things were so confused that the gang managed to get away, and it was not until about midnight that Detective Superintendent Ottaway arrived with a group of armed policemen..."

The memories of our future: Steampunk in gaming

Dystopian futures make for more appealing adventures,
since such worlds to need more saving than other, more
sunny timelines. But despite the fact that most current
sci-fi games focus on the the bleaker possibilities (war
with aliens, oppressive governments, and the impending
doom of all humanity, to name a few), change is in the air.
A niche art style that draws on both the brute power of
steam-driven technology and the elegance of the past is
gaining popularity, and it could bring some fresh air to the
somewhat stale designs of modern games.

GURPS Steampunk

GURPS Steampunk won the Origins Award for Best RPG Supplement of 2000. Then it sold out! Now it's back in print in a new deluxe hardcover edition with the same great full-color cover art. Written by William H. Stoddard, this book combines the mood of cyberpunk with the setting of an alternate Industrial Age, where computers run on steam power, walking colossi stalk the battlefields, flying ironclads rule the skies, and science is the new frontier. It covers the real events, politics, and personalities of the Industrial Age, as well as the weird science that could have been created... vehicles, robots, airships, and more.
