Blog Kiosk: 8/11/2020 - Dodgers Links & News - Some Odds and Ends

Here is a fantastic 1956 Spring Training pic of 1955 World Series hero Sandy Amoros re-creating his series winning catch at Dodgertown in Vero Beach. As you can see, he is in front of the outfield berm at Holman Stadium - at centerfield. This photo recently sold at RMY Auctions at what I thought was a steal at $26.98.

Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1950 the Dodgers were no-ht by Vern Bickford of the Boston Braves, 7-0. He needed only 97 pitches to accomplish the feat. In 1951 the first color televised broadcast of a ballgame is aired on WCBS-TV. It featured a game at Ebbets Field between the Dodgers and the Boston Braves. Unfortunately, the Boys of Summer lose the contest, 8-1In 1962 the Dodgers protest the Giants tactic of wetting down the basepaths in order to slow down speedster Maury Wills at Candlestick Park. The Dodgers would lose 5-4. Giants manager Alvin Dark would forever earn the nickname "The Swamp Fox." In 1969 Don Drysdale announced his retirement from the game. In 2015 every home team won their game -- making that a first in the live-ball era with a full slate of games.

2020 Donruss Optic Baseball - All the Dodger Cards

Last week saw the release of Panini America's 2020 Optic Baseball card brand, and now I've got pics of most of the Dodger cards to share with you. Check them all out below. Go here for a complete checklist.

Hilariously, Mookie Betts has an insert card here called "Illusions" -- as if him being a Dodger might have been an illusion, if not for the 2020 season and his signing of the recent longterm contact.

2020 Topps Finest Flashbacks -- All the Dodger Cards

A couple of weeks back Topps released their 2020 Topps Finest Flashbacks brand exclusively online. As you may know, this brand first came on the scene in the early 90's and it ushered in a refractor craze that continues to this day. This new set is an homage -- using the same design Topps used in their inaugural 1993 Baseball Finest set. Check out all the Dodgers available below. Go here for a complete checklist.

2020 Topps Now -- MLB Opening Day Dodger Cards

The first Topps Now cards of the 2020 season are now available, and three of them are Dodger related. Card #1 features last nights league unifying peaceful protest that included ballplayers from the Yankees, Nationals, Giants and Dodgers -- kneeling respectfully (some of whom were clearly praying) before the flag. Go here to check it out and order.

2020 Topps Road to Opening Day - All the Dodgers

Months back Topps released their "Road to Opening Day" set exclusively online. It included a 15-card base set and an opportunity to get one of three autographed cards (Lux, May or Smith). I now have pics of all 15 Dodger cards. Check them out below. Go here for a complete checklist. Additionally, since we've had a second "Spring Training" several additional "Waves" (additional cards) have been added over the past several weeks. I will share photos of those when pics become available. In the meantime, check out the Dodgers below.

Dodgers win. Baseball wins.

Game one of the shortened 2020 season began in earnest last night, and fortunately the Dodgers came out united and ready to mash. They banged out 12 hits -- including a four-for-five night from Kiké Hernandez (who is slowly but surely turning into "The Jet") -- to score eight runs to defeat the pumpkin's from up north, 8-1 (boxscore).

The Dodgers also joined numerous other players/teams in peacefully protesting for change. Via Alyson Footer at MLB.com:
“Everybody's here, we’re all on the same team. We're all here for change,” Betts said. “Even their team -- even the Giants -- I definitely tip my cap to the support. We have a great group of guys here, we're all supportive of each other. It definitely doesn't surprise me that [Bellinger] and [Muncy] were there with me.”

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1931 Brooklyn Robins (Dodgers) outfielder Babe Herman hit for the cycle against the the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1939 the Brooklyn Dodgers selected Dixie Walker off waivers from the Detroit Tigers. He would go on to play nine season in Brooklyn -- slashing .311/.386/.441/.827 for the Dodgers. In 1967 Dodgers President Branch Rickey is posthumously inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1993 Mets outfielder Vince Coleman tossed a M-80 firecracker from his car as he was leaving the Dodger Stadium parking area. It is reported that three people are injured; including an 11-year old boy and a two-year old girl. Coleman eventually pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of unlawful possession of an explosive device and is sentenced to 200 hours of community service. The incident, along with many others, leads the Mets to announced a month later that he would never play for the team again.

Blog Kiosk: 7/9/2020 - Dodgers Links & News - Some Odds and Ends

That was a lot of fun.

last night the Dodgers played a little three-inning intrasquad game at Dodger Stadium and it was glorious. I miss these guys. You can watch the game here.

  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1996 Dodger catcher Mike Piazza is crowned the All-Star Game MVP. He lead the National League to a 6-0 victory by slugging a solo home run in the 2nd inning and a two-out RBI double in the 3rd inning. You can watch Piazza All-Star highlights and an postgame interview hereIn 2011 Juan Uribe broke up a potential no-no with two outs in the ninth inning against the Padres by walloping a double. 2020 Topps Big League Baseball -- All the Dodger Cards

A couple of weeks back Topps released their Big League Baseball brand -- a less pricey alternative for cost conscious collectors. A box of 18 packs will run you about $30 to $40. Additionally, they have created a Collector Box that includes exclusive Super7 MLB figures (think Star Wars-like figurines) and only five packs of cards. Go here for a complete checklist.

The Super7 MLB figures might be the coolest innovation in years. They are basically action figures of your favorite ballplayers. The Dodgers' available are Clayton Kershaw and Cody Bellinger. You can see pics of them at the very bottom of this post.

2020 Topps Tier One - The Dodger Cards

Last week saw the release of Topps 2020 Tier One Baseball card brand. This premium product will cost you about $150 for a box of three cards, and you are guaranteed that two of them will be autographed. Go here for a complete checklist.

There are plenty of Dodger youngsters available to chase after -- Dustin May, Gavin Lux and Will Smith. Veterans available include Max Muncy and Clayton Kershaw. BTW, there are a whole bunch of "1 of 1" cards in this brand, but unfortuantely I have not yet seen one Dodger rarity yet.

2020 MLB Topps Now - MLB Network's Top 100 - All the Dodgers

I was starting to wonder if they were ever going to print up these cards. As you'll recall, back in February Topps sold a special set exclusively online through their Topps Now program called MLB Network's Top 100. It's a set that features only the top-100 ballplayers, per the MLB Network. After nearly four months of waiting I've just found out that these cards have recently been showing up in collectors mailboxes -- finally! Go here for a complete checklist.

These cards were sold in individual packs of 10-cards, and a total of 4902 packs were created. This would translate into an approximate print run of 490 copies of each card.

There are eight Dodgers available in the 100-card set. Check them all out below.

2020 Bowman Baseball -- All the Dodger Insert Cards

Now that you've seen the Dodger base cards, check out most of their inserts below. As you would expect, this set includes numerous autographed cards of our best prospects -- Andy Pages, Kody Hoese, Josiah Gray and Gavin Lux. There is even a signed card from Jeter Downs -- a fellow traded to the Red Sox as part of the Mookie Betts deal. A complete checklist of this set can be found here.
