Calvert and Corrigan doin' the jungle boogie !
Our friend Doctor Kiss has outdone himself with his amazing discovery of stock footage reels of Steve Calvert, and possibly Ray Corrigan ( or at least Corrigan's ape suits), doing pass after pass in front of the cameras from either Jungle Jim's, Mark of the Gorilla , or the Lost Tribe.
It becomes humorously apparent that the two monkey men are running in a circle around the camera, in the first clip.
While the second clip features Calvert VS. a lion in a fierce battle to stay awake long enough to get the shot.
The poor lion even lies down after his first sniff of Calvert's suit.
Old Leo mustered up enough energy to prop himself up on furry adversary to get some semblance of combat.
It goes to show how skilled film editors can turn a feline snooze fest into a terrific battle !
The truly amazing thing about these clips, is the clarity of the film.
I've never seen such clear footage of these masters of monkey menace !
The gorilla footage in the first clip start at approx. the 6 min. 28 second mark.

Both these incredible clips are found on Internet Archive, and can be downloaded from there.

TIPPY TOES
I have tried three times to watch MARK OF THE GORILLA (1951) and I have yet to make it through without snoozing! It's by no means a terrible film but not one to excite the mind of a sleepy, old curmudgeon who has to watch gorilla suit flicks after the missus has gone to bed. I have a particular fondness for films that have the gorilla suit itself as a plot point. Rascally white men, in full simian regalia, are using the fear of the great ape to intimidate and harass African locals to do something dastardly that I forget because I keep nodding off. Naturally our hero Jungle Jim is not deterred. I was familiar with Weissmuller from the Tarzan films but I was unprepared for his decidedly unimpressive line delivery. When pressed to utter poly-syllabic words he seems to fall a little flat. I certainly prefer, "Me Tarzan, you Jane."
This still recently arrived at the Gorilla Den and features the sneaky tip-toeing of Steve Calvert.

IT'S MOVIETIME USA!
ORIGINALLY POSTED 11-25-2008

Johnny's no Tarzan in these B budget Jungle Jim flicks but Calvert tromps about effectively in Corrigan's old suit. The top image is a Theatre schedule followed by a choice selection of the film's furrier lobby cards.
Work has kept me from too much activity round these parts but I hope to have more regular brief posts like this one.
Stay tuned.

LES GORILLA EN FRAN-SEZ
ORIGINALLY POSTED 7-27-2008
Canada's bilingual don't cha know?
I am always amazed how foreign release posters are so distinctive from their domestic counterparts. Polish one sheets from the 60's and 70's are notoriously bizarre - do yourself a favour and peruse a site or two on the subject. Belgian and French versions always catch my eye; they are often colourful and have a striking graphic quality.
I have MARK OF THE GORILLA (1950) kicking around the Gorilla Men lair but have yet to watch all of it. I can't say I am too familiar with Weismeuller's films but I am a huge fan of his original TARZAN (1932) appearance. What I have seen so far of his role in MARK makes me think he was better off grunting 'Me Tarzan, you Jane', however it's possible it's not one of his better performances.
I love the simplicity of the French release one-sheet of this Jungle Jim film but I am uncertain if the sepia tones of the background were intentional or the result of paper tanning.
