Much of the Villa Giulini lies in ruin because in 1755 the nearby river flooded and destroyed some of the home. It even covered the entire garden in 3 feet of alluvium overnight. At this Count Giulini left the residence and took up elsewhere, in Gravesend, leaving the villa behind. It was thereafter used as a barn and warehouse for some time with it then being robbed of its many decorations, paintings, furniture and even doors that were left behind.

Hey guys! We have decided to start a Patreon to help offset the costs of running a website :) Although it is a labor of love the expenses include ssl, web hosting, domain name, a few other things and of course the time spent in finding and writing about each and every place on www.abandonedplaygrounds.com
We have decided against Google Adsense and have gone towards a less invasive ad approach using just amazon affiliate links on things that relate.
With your help, we can reach our goal of becoming the largest world wide database of abandoned places.

…many myths involving the empty Baron Empain Palace including that the large home resides on a rotating base or that just the tower itself rotates. These rumors also include a secret tunnel beneath the house that connects it to the nearby Basilica Church, that there was an underground chamber with mirrors that turned red at the Baron’s death. That the Baron’s sister, Baroness Helena, died in the house after falling off the balcony and that his daughter, Miriam, was confined to the house and later killed herself in the basement…

The ride had gotten stuck on the coaster ‘The Rat’ and the ride operator was pushing the coaster free when it then launched forward with him clinging to the back of the ride. A woman was sitting on the ride with two relatives and saw Mark Blackwood hanging on to the ride as it proceeded upwards, when it reached the top of the incline, he fell…

The halls of the Whittingham Asylum, established in 1873 abandoned in 1995. Serious accounts and complaints of abuse, fraud, cruelty and mis-treatment arose in 1967. By 1968, the largest complaints were addressed to the Hospital Management Committee including accounts of patients being locked outside, in cupboards or washrooms, patients being left untreated, patients being dragged by their hair when not obeying, patients being hit, patients only receiving bread and jam or slop to eat, that some wards were infested with vermin and some wards were too hot, too cold or damp. Embezzlement and petty theft were also occurring in the hospital and it was noticed in 1968 that £91,000 were issued as spent for patients yet only £42,000 had been on record by the hospital. After this the Matron and Head Male Nurse retired early, two male nurses were convicted of theft and another nurse was imprisoned for assaulting an elderly patient who died after the attack.
