of freeways, highrises and mangroves

view of palm beach road from high rise skyscraper in sanpada, navi mumbai by mumbai photographer kunal bhatia

From the Mumbaiscapes series. This one is taken at Sanpada in Navi Mumbai, and the wide road cutting across the image is the Palm Beach Road. To its left are the high rises of Navi Mumbai's "Marine Drive", as the locals like to call it. To the right are the large swathes of mangroves that buffer the land from the sea. The road ensures that residents never interact with the mangroves, and have to be content with their views from their apartments instead.

looking over south central mumbai from one of its high-rises. in the left foreground is the s-bridge that crosses the central railway line. its soon going to be demolished, to be replaced by one of the soulless structures that make up most of the infrastructure built in mumbai today. the green patch to its left is the mumbai zoo and the little building jutting out of the tree cover is the beautiful bhau daji lad museum.

alien landscapes

BMC municipal garden in mindspace malad in mumbai planet sculptures and software parks office buildings

this photo is of the entrance plaza to the municipal garden in mindspace, malad. the astrology-theme of the park lends itself to the planet sculptures. the alien landscape blends well with the IT office buildings in the background that rise like islands and fence themselves off from their surroundings.

[update: hello folks! mindless mumbai is back :) my thesis jury went well. the project was titled: "the other eye - a space for photographic culture". and i'm hoping to work on my photography skills in the coming months.]

tresspassers not welcome

house in khotachiwadi in mumbai

while trespassers aren't welcome anywhere, this particular house and the sign on its wall seem rather serious about it. as if, if you do anything wrong, the mean-angled house on the corner shall swallow you up.

now is it just me or does someone else also get the same vibes from this? perhaps it is just me at this ungodly hour. anyway, this house is in khotachi wadi which is easily amongst the most photogenic places in the city. for more photos from this neighbourhood, just hit it up in the search box on the right.

26 jul 2005

interior of a flooded house post disaster in mumbai by kunal bhatia

five years ago, on the 26th of july 2005, torrential rain, a cloud burst and governance apathy caused unprecedented floods in mumbai. my grandfather's house was under five feet of water for over 10 hours, and this is how one of the rooms looked after 2 days. endless muck, ruined furniture and belongings, an icky smell and a high chance of every object being contaminated. all this however pales in comparison to the hundreds who died or the thousands who lost their homes. have the powers-that-be learnt their lesson? not quite.
