Dr. Phebe Marr is currently Senior Fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace where she is working on a project envisioning an alternative future for Iraq. She is a retired professor and prominent historian of modern Iraq. Before retiring, Marr was research professor at the National Defense University, and a professor of history at the University of Tennessee and at Stanislaus State University in California. In 1999 to 2000, she was a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars in Washington, D.C. She’s a frequent contributor to media discussions about Iraq and has written a number of articles on Iraq and the Middle East. A revised edition of her book, The Modern History of Iraq, was published in 2004. Marr received a Ph.D. in Middle Eastern history from Harvard University and a master's degree in Middle East studies from Radcliffe College.
