MSV

MSV picture

Hand built by expert coach-builders, it's claimed that these MSVs are virtually indestructible, after exhaustive tests by the World Army air force under severe battle conditions.

Based on WAAF designs (2066), these MSVs are specifically designed as unarmed, high security, personnel carriers, carrying any threatened VIPs in the utmost safety.

These Maximum Security Vehicles are powered by a transverse, 10-cylinder, rotary diesel-engine (front) and transverse-coupled 10-cylinder, rotary diesel-engine (rear) powering four sets of twin, Quatro-Tri "all-terrain", off-road, bullet-proof, self-inflating tyres (as 4 X 2), with power-assisted steering. With hydraulically-clamped link, suspension holding the wheels.

The MSVs are 24 feet long, weigh approx' 17,920 Lbs (8 Tons), have a top speed of 200 MPH and a cruise speed of only 15 MPH. All Spectrum vehicles use a special form of fuel drilled from the ultra-sonic refinery at Bensheba. (NOTE: The MSVs are powered by a 21st Century diesel-fuel equivalent, with Solar-cell energy collection areas for powering the electricals, which also recharge the batteries used to drive the stand-by engine).

The MSV is a four seater vehicle (two persons as driver and co-driver, with two as VIP passengers), constructed at an unknown location. The MSVs are made from a laminated hull, of hardened, bullet-proof Fleetonium ally, a layer of impact/fragment suppressor material, a layer of "honeycomb" radiation-dampening sandwich, an internal layer of steel armour plate, and are silver/grey in colours (with internal "roll-cage" and bracing). The maximum-security windows are Lead-Quartz.

If an MSV is in an area which has suffered a nuclear attack, for example, it can then be hermetically sealed from all outside contact, with its own pressured, air-conditioning/air-filtration system.

MSVs are also equipped with radiation detectors, an autopilot system and "gull-wing" doors.

  1. Transverse 8 cyl. Rotary diesel.

  2. Rear transverse 8 cyl. Rotary diesel.

  3. Gearbox.

  4. Final epicyclic drive in each hub.

  5. Hydraflow brake drum. Works like turbine in reverse, slowing wheels for final braking by disc brakes.

  6. Hydraulic steering arm.

  7. Disc brake.

  8. Hydraulic suspension.

  9. Armoured glass headlights.

  10. Intakes and filters for engine and cabin air.

  11. Standby electric motor supplied from battery.

  12. Battery, recharged by solar collector strips running the length of the centre rib.

  13. TV camera which supplies vision when the slit at…

  14. … driving position is closed by the anti-radiation shutter in front of it.

  1. Thick shell composed of armour plate, refrigeration honeycomb, anti-radiation sandwich, and internal steel wall.

  2. Giant fuel tanks (each side).

  3. The intakes and grills on the top structure serve the air conditioning of the rear cabin and air filters for rear engine.

  4. Fin housing aerials. A whip aerial extends above.

  5. Cabin for passengers. The small slit porthole is sealed with a special heat resistant anti-radiation lead quartz.

  6. Generator driven by rear Diesel, supplying current to…

  7. … drive motor.

  8. Universal jointed shaft to axle.

  9. Gearbox through which diesel drive can be transmitted direct to the wheels.

  10. Hydraulic brake fluid cooling box sited behind air scoop over rear wheels.

MSV batteries

Batteries

The batteries (1) can be recharged by the solar collector strops (2) and used to drive the standby motor (3) linked to the main transverse diesel engine (4), which drive the wheels via the gearbox (5).

Hydraulic damped link suspension (6) holds the twin wheels (8), which have power-assisted steering (7).

Air intakes serving carburettors and driver's cabin are at (9) and headlights at (10).

MSV engine

Engine

The rear engine layout is slightly different.

On each side of the centre line are four of the eight rotary diesel cylinders (1) which drive the generator (2).  Current passes through the distributor box (3) to the electric motors (4) and links with the front electrics (5).  Drive passes thought the bevel box (6) and the universal jointed drive shaft (7) to the twin wheels (8).

An interesting feature is that the diesel power can be transmitted to the wheels direct via a gearbox and the bevel box (6) should the electrics fail.  In view of the great weight of the vehicle special braking is needed.  In addition to the discs (10) hydraulic braking is used in the drum (9), fed from a pressurised cylinder (11), the fluid being cooled in the cooler (12) situated in the airstreams from an intake just above the rear wheels. (13) is the fluid storage tank.

MSV brakes

Brakes

The hydraulic brakes work like a turbine in reverse.

Blades rotate with the wheel inside a specially shaped drum forcing the working fluid from the feed pipe into the collector pipe and compressing it at the same time. The result is a steady slowing of the wheels enabling the disc brakes to be brought into play when required.

The bullet-proof tyres are tube-less and filled with self-sealing compound.  If this should prove ineffective a secondary inner tube automatically inflates to maintain pressure.

Cabin

The passenger compartment has padded seats with safety straps and an intercom/external TV with controls on the central arm.  The TV screen faces the occupants.

Over the seats, the air vents can be seen.  In the event of gas or radiation, outside atmosphere is cut off and the vehicle operates its own pressurised atmosphere.

Control panel

This section of the control panel gives readings for radiation level, internal and external temperature and air contamination.

The calibrated screen at the bottom shows the distance of the vehicle from atomic explosion.

MSV shell

Shell

Construction of the shell shown in section at the passenger cabin window.

From the outside in the layers are armour plate, refrigeration honey comb, radiation damping sandwich, and internal steel wall.

The window is of a special heat-resistant anti-radiation lead quartz.
