Spooktober & Scarevember

Hello again, long lost readers!

As us bloggers tend to do after we drift off to other platforms that tend to be easier to handle on our telecommunication devices, I've wandered back over to Blogger on numerous occasions, usually at the prompting of friends (Lewis most recently, Dave before that), only to fall at that dastardly final hurdle - consistency!

I’ve decided that I need to make a pledge, in the style of the previous monthly challenges I’ve taken part in - this should have a few different benefits: a) proper targets and themes to try and stick to b) feedback and accountability from friends and readers. Also, given that it’s almost the most wonderful time of the year (Halloween!) and the challenges I’ve been part of previously (Zomtober!), I chose a theme to reflect this but broadened it (as I’ve pretty much ran out of zombies to paint over the years!) - spooky and scary miniatures over the months of October and November, with a view to playing a bunch of games with my best friends towards the end of October/start of November (depending on the state of the ongoing plague and the various sensible restrictions that are in place).

So, what does Spooktober/Scarevember 2020 include?

My main aim is to complete the additions to my wargames collection required to play the first few missions from the brilliant Rangers of Shadow Deep, although I will be setting mine in Shyish, the Realm of Death from Age of Sigmar. Currently this stands at approximately two dozen figures and a few pieces of terrain.

Once this is achieved, I would like to complete enough terrain to be able to play some games of Dracula’s America. 

After this I’ll reassess the situation and decide where to go next (looking at you, big ol’ pile of ghouls!). Given the “paint and make scary things” overall theme, Strange Aeons/Unspeakable Cults may be the direction I take...

Pictures of actual wargames miniatures and terrain will arrive within the next couple of posts, I promise! My current plan is to update the blog every Friday for the two-month challenge (starting this Friday!) but I have lots of other stuff painted in the past couple of years that I’d like to add to the blog, so there should be a bunch of posts appearing!

Hordes of the Things: The God of Undeath

I recently bought a batch of Warmachine and Hordes figures and bits from eBay - it was a really good deal and lots of the figures looked like they'd fit in my various skirmish warbands really well. Amongst the batch of miscellaneous figures was this Cryx Bane Thrall - I knew straight away when starting the Hordes of the Things project that he'd fit perfectly for as a "God" in the Undead force I was going to build! 

The first thing I did was get rid of the ridiculous shoulder pads, leaving the part that the pads mounted to as a smaller, more reasonably-sized shoulder pad. I also chopped off the crudely sculpted axe and replaced it with the nice plastic scythe from the GW zombie regiment.

There's still more to sort out - gaps to fill and some moldlines to finish smoothing, but I'm really happy with him! I added a couple of his undead servants to his base - an undead hero of some sort and a standard bearer. This will probably be the last miniature that I complete for the project!

Hordes of the Things: General and Hero

Continuing the theme of a look at the build-up of my Hordes of the Things Undead army, we come to the start of my heroes for the force:

I was amazed to find these brilliant Warmaster figures amongst the various bits and pieces from the forces I've purchased - they're a Dark Emissary and a Truthsayer from the Dark Shadows/Albion campaign that Games Workshop ran! I actually really enjoyed that campaign/background and I loved these miniatures! I needed a Grand Necromancer for my Undead and the Dark Emissary fit the bill perfectly - the Truthsayer will be set aside to join the dwarves and elves when I get round to starting them! 

I also found a Tomb King Lord on throne amongst the odds and ends - his throne was atop this mound of skeletons and broken weapons. The pieces were glued, so I took them apart and cut away the base tab on the Dark Emissary - that was quite a fiddly job! I was very glad for the purchase of a new hobby saw! A bit of chopping here and there and he was added to the base, which I built up with some cork. Perfect lord for the army now! 

I discovered this chap yesterday in some bags of 10mm historicals that were part of the collection I've acquired - I'd guess that he's a priest of Sigmar or something like that, another Warmaster figure - I'm over the moon with him, such a lovely characterful sculpt! He'll be an apprentice Necromancer for a second Hero choice for my undead when used at 48pts!

Hordes of the Things: The Rise of the Undead

As mentioned in the last post, I have recently started to play Hordes of the Things with some friends - I've also acquired a bunch of different armies for it and a decent box of misc figures to use with the game. Eventually I will strip and repaint each of the armies I've bought, but to begin with I've decided to raid the box of spares and start an Undead force - here's how I've started:

Undead horsemen - these were what first led me to think of an undead force for the game. They're Warmaster figures. I've built bases for the army from plasticard.

Spearmen - when I first saw these in the box, I thought they were Saxons or something along those lines - I actually think they're elves... My concept for these is that they were assigned to guard the barrow tomb of my Necromancer Lord upon his defeat. Upon his return to this plane of existence, he drained the souls from them and cast them into his servitude. His gaolers became his servants.

Once I'd finished the first base of them, I set about cleaning up the rest of them - they were originally on base strips of 5 men, but I think four to a base suits it well. I'm not sure where the figures are actually from - maybes Pendraken?

Swarms of giant bats! I think these might be Pendraken too, anyone know? Lovely figures - I built them some nice bases from cork and plasticard and pinned them for added support. Obviously these will be Flyers in game.

Hordes of the Things!

Just a quick post to show some of the stuff I've been upto games-wise in 2014: Hordes of the Things! The first four pictures are from our introductory battle (with 48pt forces each, 2 players each side - Elves and Human alliance vs Beastmen and Sumerians (basically Chaos mortals!). It was great!

Loving this game so far - I'm currently working on an Undead army and I've bought elves, humans, dwarves and demons (mostly Warmaster figures - the elves and humans are massive armies and the dwarves will be the next project after the undead. I'm having fun raking through my lead mountain to find interesting things from my 28mm miniatures to add to them!) from a friend...so expect lots more HotT in 2014!

2013 Round-Up (just 19 days late...)

Hi guys - I've been meaning to write this post for a couple of weeks now but I have only just gotten around to it! A quick recap of what I got upto in 2013 and my next post will cover my current projects and my plans going forward...

The most important part of 2013 (with regards to my blog) is that GAMES ARE BEING PLAYED! It's difficult to underestimate how good this is - I've been "back in the hobby" for 5 or so years now, but even before my break in wargaming, I rarely played (once or less a year, despite having multiple armies!). In the latter half of 2013 I played multiple games of Flying Lead and Songs of Blades and Heroes - I've been planning out games and settings for years and it was a great feeling to see my painted miniatures and terrain on the table! I even got a couple of my non-wargaming friends to start playing (my housemate and another of my best friends) and, most importantly, they kept asking for more battles!

I've actually gotten a really decent amount of figures completed this year for various different projects and I got stuck into my zomb-apoc stuff during October with Zomtober 2013 - here are a few examples of things completed this year:

Missing from the round-up are various different figures, an orc and goblin warband (Celtos miniatures, for my fantasy skirmish setting), 19 pirate scum (40k Chaos Cultists), 30 or so plaguebearers (plastics and kitbashes!), more zombies... A good painting year in general!

Newsflash - Actual Games Being Played!

Since getting back into the miniature wargames hobby about 6 years ago, I've always been planning to run various games in a post-apoc universe (or fantasy, or Necromunda, or a Firefly-esque...) with my circle of friends. I've always put it off - it's always been too much hassle to set it up spur of the moment, or I've always wanted to "just finish off this last [piece of terrain, miniature, objective]" - I'm sure that anyone that still reads my blog will be happy to hear that I've finally started gaming!

These are some snapshots from the bunch of test games I've run in the past couple of weeks - I'm so happy with how things are looking all set up! It's also spurred on a flurry of painting and planning! This setup was the first game - an outpost of the shanty town being attacked by raiders and the scavenger militia responding.

This game was somewhat evenly matched with no true victor...

The rules we're using are Flying Lead from Ganesha Games - I've now got a good handle on the rules and I've began importing some scenarios from Necromunda and other sources - we started a Scavenger Hunt scenario last night and I'm planning on drawing up a map of the main town and surrounding areas. I'm also going to use some rules from Fear and Faith to represent rad-ghouls and other beasties.

The main inspiration for the choice of Flying Lead and my plans for a co-operative setting for my friends is Dawn of the Lead - a great blog, whose author is running a great narrative "warpg" setting, combining the likes of Aliens, Predator and Terminator into one epic sci-fi setting. This would be my future plan for my setting, but instead of the above sources, it'll be closer to Fallout, Borderlands and Firefly...

Well now, this is rather flattering!

Well, this was a bit out of the blue, and rather flattering! It certainly put a big grin on my face! I'm speaking of the "Stylish Blogger Award" from Mik, of Mik's Minis. As a big fan of his blog and with it being one of the main influences of me starting Chris' Miniature Woes, this came as a welcome surprise!

Seven Things About Me

1. I love Peep Show. It's a superb British comedy, with some unbearably cringe-worthy scenes. I often get internal monologues like the main characters. As a wargamer you have to absolutely love lines like "I'm cancelling you out of shame, like my subscription to White Dwarf!" - check it out!
2. I've had 6 operations on my knees. They're scarred to bits, but I do rather like my war wounds/Frankenknees...
3. I miss my greenhouse and garden very much in the lovely weather that we've been having recently.
4. I love cooking - especially cooking for my mates. I also like combining stuff that needs using out of the fridge and making great one-off meals that are impossible to recreate...
5. I studied Film Studies at university. Sadly, due to my knee problems, I never finished my degree. I should really get that finished...
6. I very much enjoy the outdoors, it's a shame I live in a large town - I love getting mucky, walking through rivers and climbing up rocks and the like. 
7. I love decent cover songs. Even quite cheesy ones. I think I like it when something is taken and turned into something new. Probably the same reason I love awesome conversions!

Onto the blogs - what I will say, is that I'm not much of a commenter. It's definitely something I need to sort out and I do go through phases of posting quite a bit. To be honest, I've always been a bit of a lurker when it comes to forums and blogs - I realise that I should probably get a bit more involved! These are some of the blogs that I love and their creators are doing a great job:

• Dropship Horizon - a lovely blog to read, Mark is one of the hardest working bloggers out there, usually posting multiple updates per day. This isn't his only blog either - this one is focused on near-future to sci-fi combat at 15mm, showcasing the fantastic selection of miniatures available at that scale. Mark is always updating with interesting concepts and ideas for games. Well worth a read.
• Vampifan's World of the Undead - this blog is focused on zombies and vampires, with battle reports, reviews (miniatures, films, books) and examples of Vampifans excellent work. Vampifan seems to own just about every vampire and zombie miniature out there...
• Warrant of Trade - as the name of the blog suggests, WoT revolves around the Rogue Trader RPG by Fantasy Flight Games. Witchfinder General gives us a blog that not only charts the course of the game he is currently GM-ing, but also gives great insight into the ways to run an immersive campaign that your players are truly a part of. This blog made me buy the Rogue Trader main rulebook - time to find a decent gaming group...
• Tales from the Maelstrom and earlier, Jeriko's Reach - one of my favourite blogs, TftM showcases the kind of games I'd love to take part in - interesting, story-driven games in a backwater setting, somewhat away from the long reach of the Inquisition. Great miniatures, lovely terrain, interesting characters. I'd love a gaming group like this!
• Feralique - my mate Daniel's blog - like myself, Daniel has modelling attention deficit disorder, always having something new on the go project-wise. Painting and concept-wise, the miniatures shown on Feralique are superb, with a style all of their own. Check out his recent Plague Marine conversions - brilliant!
• Nathan "Ironworker" Miller's Miniature Games - another gamer whose setting, miniatures and terrain I'd love to emulate. Nathan uses that friend-of-the-gamer, junk, to build terrain that looks lived in and usable! Check out the blog for great battle reports.
• Port Maw - a recently-started blog, I was subscribed to Torben's painting log over on the Eastern Fringe forum - I recently received an email from the forum to say that there had been additional posts there. Torben is carving out his own little niche in the 40k universe with the kind of gaming I love - narrative driven, conversions galore. The blog has only been running a couple of weeks, but given the painting log and the posts that are already up, it's shaping up to be a great one.
• INQ28 - a fantastic blog, run by Commissar Molotov (of various forums) and focused on his gaming groups 28mm Inquisitor gaming (as opposed to the 54mm scale that GW used with this particular game). This is how I used to play Inquisitor back in the day and I've had several aborted efforts to get my mates involved in this type of gaming again. I'll succeed one day, but for now I'll have to live vicariously and keep reading Mol's INQ28 blog! Fantastic conversions and background with battle reports every now and then - go check it out!
• Four Colour Super Minis - this blog was originally set up for the superhero genre, but gets sidetracked now and then, with A Very British Civil War, various historicals, cowboys...all sorts basically! Lovely painting, lovely bits of background - this is a blog that I'm always excited about updates from!
• Four-Color Figures - another blog that seems to have started off aimed at the supers genre (with Scott, the creator, being responsible for creating SuperSystem) and branched out into all kinds of other genres, with Warmachine/Hordes, 40k, Heavy Gear, Songs of Blades and Heroes - all sorts really. This blog has led to me purchasing more than a few random miniatures.

Well, that's about it - I've spent a good part of my day writing this (inbetween distractions) and would advise that you go read these blogs!

More 'stealery goodness...

Finished off a spot of painting on Saturday evening after a relatively busy day...

The next 4 Space Hulk Genestealers. Very happy with this scheme, seems to work rather well and it's also the Space Hulk classic :)

After being bullied into starting a force for Epic by various friends, these are my test miniatures, shown WIP earlier in the blog.

These are on their way for the force - old Mk1 Imperial Hellhounds, I think they fit the corrupted PDF/Renegade Forgeworld-built aesthetic of the "Leman Russes" (which are converted from the Ork battlewagons).

Next up for my 40k Chaos Marines - 5 Havocs. I'll probably add to their number with some bolter Marines for cannon fodder. These are aimed at taking on the Ork horde of my main gaming friend, I also have pretty much the same unit in my Imperial Marines.

I've also been working on a few bits and pieces tonight, but nothing particularly solid enough to post updates for. I currently have 5 Sternguard (converted from the robed Dark Angel veterans) and a power armoured Librarian using the Dark Angels special character Ezekiel - I've always loved the model and managed to pick up the figure for pennies on eBay minus his sword. I've managed to convert him up a nice fiery force weapon, from the Empire Wizard kit sprue. More on these soon - I also have a couple of other robed characters and the next 5 Sternguard awaiting paint.

In non-wargaming news, I finally managed to get out into the garden to work in the greenhouse for a while. My parents recently turned what had been a storage outhouse for all kinds of junk into a storage outhouse for their budding business, meaning the greenhouse became a place to dump all the empty plant pots. I had a slight tidy out of these, got rid of the stuff that wasn't of use anymore and managed to get some seeds sown - jalapeno chillies, mixed salad greens and lettuce to begin with. The aforementioned Orkish gaming buddy shares my love of jalapenos (and is vegetarian...boo/hiss) so they should come in handy later on in the year! At the moment I'm pondering sowing more jalapenos, need to sow a hell of a lot more lettuce, sow radishes, chop back some herbs, sow more oregano, decide what to fill my outdoor vegetable beds with... The list goes on!

I also just started watching a new TV show - V (link). It's a good ol' "invasion by aliens" story, but it's really well done, very polished and filled with great actors. The first episode was quite a "ooh, what was she in again?"-type of episode, but none the less, it's tense, well written and really is worth a watch. There are only 6 episodes out so far, and only 8 in the first season as far as I can tell - give it a go!

...and looking forward...

Well, this is another post that I've been meaning to write for a few days now, with real-life intervening in various ways to delay the post - I actually started writing it a week ago now, but I'm always too tired to finish it off!

Happy New Year to anyone reading - it's been a bit turbulent in the Miniature Woes' household, with various family gatherings, neighbours having heart attacks etc. etc.

What have I got planned for the year ahead?


Possibly my favourite present from Christmas, I really can't gush enough about how fantastic this is. The whole format is rather opulent, with fantastic sculpts, great accessories, great art...the whole package. In this new year I intend to get everything from the box assembled and painted for gaming with a non-wargaming friend. He's already said that he'd like to try it out and I'm rather looking forward to it! I'd also like to play it with some of my other friends, who might want to use their own forces in it (I also like the idea of using it as a "dungeon" for Dark Heresy/Rogue Trader) and I will be putting together a few variant forces for it. Namely, a Chaos Space Marine force and a force of Marines in Power Armour. They should be rather fun to do, and will be mounted on plasticard bases instead of the normal GW round ones.

2010 is going to be the year of Chaos - I currently have 3 Chaos armies that are work-in-progress, in varying degrees of completion. My Fantasy Warriors of Chaos, for example, have barely been started, whilst my Chaos Marines and Chaos Daemons have sizeable portions completed.


Another of my main projects will be the Wasteland setting - a skirmish game with miniatures from various different companies. The plan for 2010 is to take the bits and pieces of background material I have noted down/is whizzing around my head and formulate a cohesive background for at least a portion of the game world. The best way I can think to explain it is that it's something like Fallout3 meets Firefly. It's a sci-fi Earth-like world that was racked by civil war, which left the world irradiated and humanity almost thrown back to the stone age. The rest of humanity, in the stars, blockaded the world, leaving the space around the planet mined and a small fleet to keep out the scavengers. The war did not rid the world of all it's humans - pockets survived in underground bunkers and in the wilderness, where the bombs did not fall, others were mutated or stripped of their humanity by the radiation. In the aftermath of the war, settlements arose, maps were re-written, leaders arose. From time to time, ships land, smuggling various items to the surface, taking refugees at exorbitant prices...
That's about it! I have ideas for a number of towns and characters, with 5 gangs and counting, with another 3 or 4 in work-in-progress form.
To begin with, the setting was created to fit into the GW background, but since then I've decided to keep it as it's own setting. Hopefully I'll be able to have some games over the next year!

Other projects will include completing the Space Marines I currently have work in progress, and eventually starting my Imperial Guard army properly and a selection of Battlefleet Gothic miniatures and other space ships.

On the gaming front, I'd just love to be able to game more often. I need to find a decent local wargames club, as well as getting in touch with some of my old gaming mates. I have forces for a number of different games now - it'd be awesome to have a little Blood Bowl tournament, or a Mordheim campaign. A 40k campaign could also be on the cards.

In real life, I want to use 2010 to sort my knees out. I've had problems with my right knee for 4 years now, and varying degrees of problems with the both of them over the past 10 years. It's about time I had something done about it and I would be more capable of living my life.

Exterminatus

Well, I had another post planned as a sort of New Years Resolutions/looking ahead blog, but that will be coming later in the week. For now, we have a small update with some of the miniatures I'm working on.

I'm still chiselling away at the Terminator Horde I have work-in-progress. These are two that I've got to somewhere near 80% - the next step will be to gloss coat the black portions of their armour, then add chipped metal on edges and other areas that would likely get worn easily. Then markings, weathering and basing. Slowly getting there! I now remember why I limited my batch painting of the other squad of Terminators to blocks of 2 or 3 - they can really drag on and on...


As a semi-distraction I decided to start the "busy work" of the Space Hulk box - the door/portal holders. I began by spray undercoating them (black, on the reverse of this piece of cardboard). I then mixed up a watered down version of BG metal with some blue and purple in it. It was a nice dark metal, and I hope to have enough left in the pot to do all of the bases for the game with it.


I then created a wash with some Blue Ink, Chaos Black, Johnsons Klear (it's a floor product, but is used in washes and the like to aid the flow...or something) and water, and applied it to all of the door holders, now attached to the reverse of the cardboard with blu-tak. Once this had dried I watered down some Vermin Brown and used it to add a few patches of rust here and there. After that dried, I used some Tamiya Clear Red and added some spilt blood on some of them. Turned out nicely I think!

I cleaned up and spray undercoated the objectives - first black and then a light coat of white spray. Not sure how to paint the CAT yet, but I have schemes for the dead marine and chalice worked out in my head.


Something else I'm on with - stripping a bunch of random miniatures for various projects. A cheap eBay lot got me various Marines from Space Crusade - they will be used to make a nice retro squad for Space Hulk, as well as a squad of Chaos Space Marines and a squad of Plague Marines for a bit of variety with the forces involved!

Looking back...

Well, I have been meaning to write this since somewhere near Christmas day, in anticipation of the new year and obligatory "resolutions" post :)

This is a look back over some of my projects of the last year, all the miniatures and terrain shown are examples of the work I got finished in 2009 and should give some nice indicators as to the direction of my projects in 2010. These are my Imperial Space Marines, a custom Chapter - the Shadow Wraiths. These are my largest army - I currently have something near a Battle company of Marines for these and have a number of squads to finish off - the 15 Terminators shown earlier in my blog, a Tactical squad, an Assault squad, a Sternguard squad also shown work-in-progress earlier in the blog, various Chaplains and Librarians and plans for a dual Thunder Mace-wielding Chapter Master.


My Chaos forces are a project that started sometime in the past year or so - I've had a bunch of stuff work-in-progress for a while now. It's actually two armies - a mixed force of Chaos Daemons and an army of Chaos Renegades named the Vulture Legion, who are a piratical warband drawn from various Chaos Legions and Renegade Chapters, who ceremonially strip their power armour back to the ceramite in vats of chemicals, then repainting half blood red in dedication to the overlord of the Vulture Legion. They also take on Mercenaries and Cult Troops - for example, the Tzeentchian Vorpal Brotherhood shown in the picture. In the next year both armies will be gaining reinforcements, with a squad of Plaguemarines, a squad of Havocs and a large murder-squad of Beserkers on the way for the Marines, and Fiends, Beasts and more Flamers on the way for the daemons.


This really began as a side project this year - a skirmish game combining elements of Necromunda and Gorkamorka, with a distinctly post-apocalyptic feel. Yeah, I was playing a lot of Fallout3! I have a number of ideas for this buzzing around my head, with a Fallout-like not-Earth planet combined with a Firefly-esque universe. I think I'll have completed somewhere in the region of 100 miniatures for this project this year alone, with another 60 or so miniatures rebased to fit with it. At the moment I have 5 full gangs/warbands for this, with more planned. I also have the zombies shown above, then 40 "rad-ghouls" made from the GW Fantasy plastic ghouls. I recently added some scavengers to my collection from em4 Miniatures and Copplestone Castings, so these will be seen in the new year, as well as even more...

Wasteland Terrain! Note the landmines around the playground. I love this project, and it works just as nicely with Warhammer 40k as it does with the Wasteland games. In this next year I intend to add a scavenger fortress to this collection, as well as even more car wrecks, more barricades, roads and a collapsed overpass, maybes some dead giant beasts (just skeletons remaining), crashed ships, more piles of scrap - all sorts!
