Little Annie Anxiety Bandez

annie_anxiety.jpg (30 KB)
Little Annie is an adventuress, chanteuse/lyricist, multi-media artist and post-modern cabaret queen with a long, illustrious and eclectic recording career. Born in New York with no intention of a career in the arts, she pursued numerous jobs, criss-crossed the continent, and generally earned her poetic license until she found herself on stage at the legendary 'Max’s Kansas City', fronting the atonal, savage dance-rthymed Asexuals at the sneak-in-the-back-door age of 16. After meeting Steve Ignorant from the band Crass on her doorstep a year later, she visited the United Kingdom for 2 weeks and stayed for over a decade. Through the years and numerous collaborations (Wolfgang Press, Crass, the ON-U Sound stable, Paul Oakenfold, Kid Congo Powers, Current 93, Nurse With Wound, the late Bim Sherman, Coil, Fini Tribe, Collapsed Lung, and many fine others) she refused to be restricted by labels and genres and continues to span the spectrum from jazz, reggae & hip-hop to torch and avant-garde.

9. Carried Away 2:23
10. God Song 4:52
11. Adrianna 5:30

Here comes Genderful, Annie and Paul's new album that somehow manages to perfectly mix soul songs and chansons, bluesy saloon singing and European cabaret styling into a gorgeous, new amalgam. Dig the gentle groove and the sad strings of "Suitcase Full of Secrets", and the fluttering, art-house-cinema-soundtrack glamour of "Because You're Gone Song". "Regret", "Carried Away" and "In The Bar Womb" would make Jacques Brel and/or Serge Gainsbourg proud. "Zen Zexy Zage", "Cutesy Bootsies" and "Adrianna" are brilliant little three penny operas for this post-gentrification/monetary meltdown epoch. Then there are subtle epics like "Billy Martin's Requiem"- a tough, groovy bit of NYC-back-in-the-day-free-association that mixes the ill-fated Yankees manager, the post-punk scene and all the brilliant men lost to AIDS in one smart, seamless package, and "Tomorrow Will Be", a shimmering, resplendent prayer to life with Annie as a knowing urban/urbane/earth mother.

Genderful is sentiment without sentimentality, inspiration without bombast, a collection of songs thick with pain and wit and joy.

A perfect reflection of Annie herself....

See you on the other side of heartache.

"'Elemental 7' and 'European Rendezvous' were originally released on Doublevision Records as CTI projects. They were recorded on analogue 4 and 2 track reel and cassette format. The inherent limitations of this type of equipment are accentuated by the digital CD medium, however, they were digitally re-mastered to the highest standard possible from the original reel to reel tapes.
The decision to re-release these two CTI projects was in answer to demand which in itself saved them from being destroyed. We were just in time to rescue the material from serious damage due to bad storage facilities beyond our control. The original master tapes are now no more.
'Elemental 7' is the soundtrack to a one hour video of the same name which is now unavailable. The video and soundtrack were made in 1982 and completed in 1983. A CTI project by Chris Carter, Cosey Fanni Tutti and John Lacey.
'European Rendezvous' is music taken from live shows during 1983 in Holland, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the UK. An extended version was available on video featuring the slide projections by John Lacey which accompanied each show. The video is no longer available.
Because of the time limitations with CD format we found it necessary to omit some tracks from European Rendezvous. We chose 'Thy Gift Of Tongues' and 'The Need' as they are available on Collectiv 1. Also omitted was 'Voice Echo' and 'Slow'.

Originally released as a limited edition 7" in collaboration with John Duncan. A Japanese release.

"All the tracks featured on this CD were originally released on vinyl/cassette or as flexidiscs or 'B' sides, all of limited availability. Due to demand for these rarities we have compiled as many as we could obtain the master tapes for. Because of the nature of the compilation projects, being in cassette form etc. some of these tracks were re-mastered from the original cassette master, for most we were lucky to find the original reel to reel recordings and therefore obtain the best possible quality.
The majority of these tracks which appeared as part of compilation projects were donated in the spirit of independent music, fulfilling the demand for alternative music for the listener as well as the 'musician'. The early 80's were a very active time for independent alternative releases, an era which was effectively ended by major label interference and when the spirit and innovation got taken over by the smell of money.

Including one of the "Intermyth" records (Je T'aime by Genesis P-Orridge & Thee Angels Ov Light) and, as the CD editions excluded either parts or longer mixes of otherwise worthwhile tracks, those too have been included in this comprehensive mix. A few are missing, or simply edited down to essential components and therefore unrecognizable unless one is familiar with every nuance of the original releases. Oftimes, familiar but originally sparse material within similar themes were sequenced in parallel to one anther, such as C93/Camberwell Now at the end of the first mix. In the case of the Sub Rosa sound archeology collages, I edited and moved their respective parts into various positions in a way that will not disturb their original sanctity. Those being: Tibetan Buddhist Evening Ritual, SR Sound Catalog, 8 Perspectives Romanes and Les Archives Sonores. Mixed by Wey Nagrom.

A1 Hanu @ Basecloud
Featuring [Introduction] - Jimmy Carl Black
A2 Wayward Crystal Arrow
B1 Echobase
B2 Sister Marblegazer

Bonus LP for Audiosapien DLP by Earthmonkey.
In adidition to a fourth LP side not available on the CD edition,(later released on Be That Charge disc 2) Beta-Lactam Ring's double vinyl edition of Audiosapien also comes with a bonus 12" billed as Earthmonkey vs. Nurse With Wound. Hanu @ Basecloud is a welcome companion to the album, and could even stand on its own quite well as a short LP. The record is introduced by the legendary Jimmy Carl Black of the Mothers of Invention, intoning his famous line which will be very familiar to Zappa fans: "Hi, I'm Jimmy Carl Black, I'm the Indian of the group, and you're listening to...Earthmonkey!" This auspicious introduction is sampled, spliced, chopped and poured like lumpy gravy over the rest of this sidelong track, a powerfully hallucinogenic slab of fierce, majestic psych-rock that phases all over the stereo channels. I'm guessing that Nurse With Wound's contribution lies in the incongruous vocal snippets and samples sprinkled liberally throughout these tracks, adding just the right amount of strangeness and complexity to the primitive Kraut jams.
Side B is a different beast altogether, a Middle Eastern-textured psych excursion with a dark, shuffling beat overlaid with snaking funk guitars, horn bleats and hair-raising washes of surrealistic sound. It's a bit reminiscent of the soundtrack to Fantastic Planet, pulled through the other side of an hashish tent filled with ranting bedouins. This 12" is just as accomplished as Audiosapien, but with an intensity and focus that makes it even easier to return to. Jonathan Dean

"all these tracks date from the early to mid eighties, at that time we were in the midst of the d.i.y cassette revolution. during that period everybody and their dog were compiling "international" tape compilations which, if you were lucky and took part in one of these endeavours may have gone on to sell 20 copies and you, for your trouble would receive a copy. well, in the eighties i didn't get out too much so i contributed to 15 or 20 of these international compilations, mostly i supplied a mix of whatever it was that i was working on at the time. thinking these pieces were destined to oblivion... until frank maier came along. other material here included some rather dodgy live events that i suppose at best could be thought as of slight historical value. more interesting is "destroyed piano" from 1983 recorded at i.p.s. studio, london just after completing "homotopy to marie". i always liked these but until now they never found a home. most flawed existence was remastered from cassette.
i would like to thank matt waldron for all his painstaking work in bringing the sound quality up and to frank maier for his endless enthusiasm.
