vintage pastel stars - a finished co-production

Together with my friends from all over Europe we co-produced a charity quilt. I was the queen bee for this quilt and asked for vintage and pastel looking stars on a pastel solid background. I love all kinds of star quilts, but I never made a whole star quilt before. Making quilts in a group helps me tick some things of my own quilting bucket list too!

As a reminder: I make these quilts with do good stitches a virtual worldwide charity bee. I am in the european branche now called the "comfort circle". I also love meeting new people who love what I love and be inspired by their work.

Now for the finished quilt:

I made some extra blocks myself. Now it's big  enough to comfortably cover a single bed. It is backed with a blue and white striped cotton. It is quilted by home machine with a free motion foot making continuous eights. A pattern that is very do-able, I had the quilting finished in about 2 sessions of an hour, but the pattern also complements the sharp corners of the stars with some roundness. It is hand bound with pink pearl bracelets (one of the few fabric names I remember)

And who doesn't fall in love with a rolled up quilt. I think it will make some little girl very happy. It will be gifted to a girl who is temporarily placed in a children's home of the Salvation Army.

Explanation Pastel Vintage Stars
The "pattern" is pretty straightforward. It's especially easy if you make two semi-identical stars with the same fabrics, that is what I did.

From your stash or scraps pick 8 different prints that are "pastel-ish" and fit a romantic and/or vintage feel (I leave all that to your imagination). Cut two 4 inch squares of each. 


Pick a pastel solid. Cut eight 3 1/2 inch squares and eight 4 inch squares. 

Now make the HST's by paring all the printed fabric squares with the solid squares (the 4 inch ones) and pairing the leftover printed squares with each other for the center. They wil be a little too big and after ironing you can cut them down to 3 1/2 inch. 

After that lay-out the blocks, and sew them together.

The block is 12 1/2 inch unfinished. (meaning: after you sew them into the quilt they will be 12 inch)

One more Random Sampler filler - a flying geese variation

I love flying geese, they should be in any sampler and in mine for sure. I made a variation to make it measure 3 x 6 inch finished (3 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch unfinished)

Cutting instructions:
For some reason I cannot sew very precise when sewing triangles. I think you should be able to make the block using 4 inch squares, but I prefer them a little bigger and then cutting the block back afterwards.
For making two blocks, cut:

• Color 1 (redish checker): one 4 1/4 inch square (or 4 inch if you think you can do it with no waste). Cut in half diagonally.
• Color 2 (red cross): one 4 1/4 inch square (or 4 inch if you think you can do it with no waste). Cut in half diagonally.
• Color 3 (greenish stars): one 4 1/4 inch square (or 4 inch if you think you can do it with no waste). Cut on both the diagonals to get four triangles.
• Color 4 (blue loops): one 4 1/4 inch square (or 4 inch if you think you can do it with no waste). Cut on both the diagonals to get four triangles.

So no you have 4 bigger triangles and eight smaller ones. Lay them out into your block:

First sew the four triangles together to form a bigger triangle. Use the blue triangle as a center piece and sew on the right and left triangle, add the upper one last.

Cut of the dog ears and sew on the bigger triangles. Iron them and trim back if necessary.

You can scatter them over the random sampler to fill gaps, or make a partial border with them. Hope you like them, see you soon!

another random sampler tutorial - some small blocks to fill the gaps

I told you about the random sampler here. I now have mostly 6 inch blocks and a few 9 inch ones. So I thought we'd need some 3 inch fillers!

A lazy girl tiny nine patch

Two make two tiny 3 inch (finished, 3 1/2 unfinished) blocks you wil need:
- color 1: three 4 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch rectangles
- color 2: three 4 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch rectangles

Sew these strips together as laid out in the picture. Iron the seams to one side.

Cut them in 1 1/2 inch strips lengthwise:

Lay them out into nine patches:

And sew them together:

Make a few pairs to help your puzzle later-on.

A lovely variation on this theme will be the + block.

A lazy girl tiny + block

Two make a tiny 3 inch (finished, 3 1/2 unfinished) block you wil need:
- color 1: two 3 x 1 1/2 inch rectangles
- color 2: two 3 x 1 1/2 inch rectangles and on 3 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch rectangle (for the center)

This time you will sew together the three 3 x 1 1/2 inch rectangles, Iron and cut in half lengthwise. Put the two halves next to the center rectangle like this:

And you sew them together!

birdie birdie

I made some birds for my nieces birthday. She has a new home and a new room and to give it some character I thought a "tree with birds" would be lovely. Her name is Merle, French for Blackbird (Merel in dutch) so a birdie theme was not far away.

I love them! And I have already cut up some scraps for a new batch. Our house seems to be in need of a birdie tree too!

Double Dutch Random Sampler - a dutch windmill block tutorial

Hi everyone, It is my turn to show you a block you could add to your double dutch random sampler! This is the third block we are doing.

Pfff, that was a lot of information I'm sure, but it's nice to have it summed up in one place.

Now for my journey on choosing a block. I am not good at making blocks up, I almost never do it and if I do, explaining how to make it to someone else who is not sitting next to me is even more difficult. So I decided to keep it simple. Like Nigella Lawson says in everyone of her cooking books: Please don't make a new and complex recipe when you are getting company. Instead make something simple that you did before, so you can still enjoy the evening.

We agreed on varying the sizes of the blocks within the boundaries of 3-6-9-12 inch. The first 2 blocks measure six inch. So I made the blocks in a nine inch size, but I have added the measurements for making it 6 inch (finished) or 12 inch (finished). So you can make it a size you like, or multiple sizes, which will have a nice effect in the sampler I think.

My inspiration was a block I made in the Farmer's Wife Quilt Along called Box. Like a lot of blocks in this quilt I really don't get this name. What has this block got to do with a box? It reminds me of a dutch windmill, so I thought it appropriate for this quilt-along.

You will need two contrasting fabrics. And cut them up:

• For a nine inch finished block cut (this is the one I made): 
• color 1: 4 squares of 3 7/8 (you can cut them 4 inch too and trim later if you prefer) and 1 of  3 1/2 inch.
• color 2 (background): 4 squares of 3 7/8 (you can cut them 4 inch too and trim later if you prefer)
• For a six inch finished block cut: 
• color 1: 4 squares of 3 3/8 (you can cut them 3,5 inch too and trim later if you prefer) and 1 of  2 1/2 inch.
• color 2 (background): 4 squares of 3 3/8 (you can cut them 3,5 inch too and trim later if you prefer)
• For a twelve inch finished block cut: 
• color 1: 4 squares of 5 3/8 (you can cut them 5,5 inch too and trim later if you prefer) and 1 of  4 1/2 inch.
• color 2 (background): 4 squares of 5 3/8 (you can cut them 5,5 inch too and trim later if you prefer)

Step 1:

Match the 4 squares of both fabrics in sets of two (right sides together) and make HST's (half square triangles) of them. For less experienced sewers; there are lots of lovely tutorials out there. I will try to give a comprehensible explanation and show some pictures: 

You draw a diagonal line on the squares and sew a scant 1/4 inch of each side of the line. When  finished, cut along the line to seperate two triangles. Fold them open, press open and cut it to size (when you are making the nine inch block: 3 1/2 inch). A lovely "cutting to size" tutorial for HST's, you can find here.

From the leftover fabrics I made bookmarks for my girlfriends, nieces, sisters, etc. So everyone had a little something handmade for christmass since my massive plans didn't all work out!

voor kleine en grote boekenwurmen - uitleg

I made bookmarks for Morritz's classmates. Together with something sugary they will be his birthday treat. I hope they like them. They were easy to make. the back is laminated cotton and the front a sturdy canvas. I'm giving an explanation in dutch. If you have questions, please ask. There's really not much to it! An easy gift for lots of ocasions!

Ik maakte voor Morritz om uit te delen boekenleggers. Ten eerste is lezen met je kind harstikke leuk en zouden we dat allemaal nog veel meer moeten doen, het is een goed gevoel om dat aan te moedigen. Ten tweede is het een nuttig en blijvend kado en kan ik de hoeveelheid snoepjes die daar bij moeten minimaliseren. Heel verantwoord eigenlijk! Maar het zou ook een leuk bedankje kunnen zijn voor een juf. Een leuk kadootje voor je moeder, vader, vriending die zo van lezen houdt.

Ik heb heel veel tutorials ervoor gezien van heel simpel tot heel ingewikkeld. Zie ook mijn tutorial lijst in het andere tabblad. In mijn hoofd vormde ik mijn idee op basis van alle dingen die ik zag. Het moest niet te ingewikkeld zijn, want er moesten er 20 komen binnen afzienbare tijd. Ik gebruikte tafelzeil/laminated cotton voor de achterkant en een stevige canvas voor de voorkant. Ik maakte een uitlegje, het stelt niet veel voor.

Uitleg boekenleggers:

Nodig:

•  2 stukken stof van 18cm bij 6cm. Voor deze heb je tenminste stevige stof nemen. Ik gebruikte voor 1 kant tafelzeil/ laminated cotton, voor de andere kant een stevige canvas. Je zou ook dunnere stof kunnen nemen en dan verstevigen, maar dat heb ik niet geprobeerd.
• Kartel schaar
• Lintje, leuke kleur garen
• Naaimachine

Doen:

• Als je nog iets wilt borduren, applicaties strijken of naaien op de boekenlegger, doe dat dan nu. Ik naaide met de machine de namen (dat kan de mijne!) van de kinderen op de voorkant. 
• Leg de 2 stukken stof met de verkeerde kanten op elkaar. Steek er een speld in om het op zijn plek te houden. 
• Knip langs de boven rand met je kartelschaar. Steek er een dubbel gevouwen lintje tussen, laat het een stukje er in steken, zodat je hem zo mee vast naait. 
• Naai rondom: Begin bij het reeds geknipte stuk, dan verschuift je lintje niet en daar ga je wat dichter langs de kant, na de eerste hoek ga je voetje breed verder to je weer bij het begin bent. Hecht af.
• Knip de 3 nog niet geknipte kanten ook met de kartelschaar zonder door het stiksel te knippen.
• Strijk hem nog even aan de niet zeil kant en..... KLAAR!

Ik stop er straks nog iets te snoepen bij en dan kan hij ze na de vakantie gaan uitdelen!

zippy pouch, swapping & wedding preparation

I made my aunt and hardcore blog follower a little gift for her birthday!
Ik maakte voor mijn tante en blogvolger van het eerste uur een klein kadootje voor haar verjaardag. Dit is hem Marjan en hij komt mee met mam! Wil je er ook 1 maken, zie hier mijn tutorial. Ik gebruikte 1 van mijn favoriete "tekst" stoffen met een knalle rose. Ik naaide er een hexagonnetje op en maakte een passen lintje aan de rits.

I also cut the squares for the scrap vommit swap. I just love going through fabrics. I put some aside to make my niece a baby blanket "ticker tape style". I made one before here. The tutorial is on sew mama sew. This is what I'm sending my partners!

Ik ben ook lekker aan het snijden geweest voor de scrap vommit swap (de naam vind ik nog steeds niet zo aantrekkelijk). Ik vind het heerlijk om zo een beetje door mijn stofjes te neuzen. Ik legde alvast wat scraps apart voor een poppendeken voor mijn nichtje die straks 1 wordt. "ticker tape style" ik maakte er al eerder 1 hier en je vindt de tutorial op sew mama sew. Dit is het pakketje dat naar mijn 3 ruilpartners gaat. 49 vierkantjes pp!

My best friend is getting married tomorrow and I'm preparing every ones clothes. Our family theme, how corny is that, wil be aqua/petrol. So I bought all my boys a matching tie, which will match my outfit. Look how cute. I will share some pictures of us dressed up soon!
Mijn beste vriendin trouwt morgen en ik ben alle spullen aan het klaar leggen. Ons gezins themakleurtje (hoe erg is dat??) is turquoise. Ik heb voor alle 3 de mannen een turquoise das en dat past dan ook weer bij mijn outfit. Kijk hoe leuk! Ik zal natuurlijk snel foto's laten zien van mijn opgedofte gezin LOL!

just for me - tutorial ereader

I made a little something just for me (I don't seem to do that often). I even cut into one of my unused stash, using one of my favourite fabric lines from melody miller: ruby star rising.  It's a little pouch for my little new e-reader Alexander got me (see previous post) I'm going to explain how to make one. It's a pretty straightforward design. If english readers have questions, please let me know.

Ik maakte wat voor mezelf, dat blijk ik niet zo vaak te doen. Ik gebruikte zelfs één van mijn nieuwe onaangebroken stofjes. Ik heb altijd een drempel om in zo'n nieuw stofje te knippen voor mezelf. Ik denk dan altijd, maar ik heb nog wat over van dit of dat. Maar ik gebruikte nu gewoon de transistors van één van mijn favoriete stoffenlijnen (Ruby Star Rising van Melody Miller). Het is een hoesje voor mijn nieuwe e-reader, die ik van Alexander kreeg (zie vorige post). Het is een simpel ontwerpje. Het lijkt op een gekke vorm ritstasje. Ik zal jullie er even kort door heen helpen, mocht je er ook één willen maken! (voor jezelf, je schoonvader, je vriendin, verzin het maar!)

Uitleg

Nodig:
- 2 lapjes stof buitenkant (bij mij de transistors), 2 voering (bij mij donkerblauw). Afmeting: meet ereader en tel ongeveer 4 cm bij op bij breedte en hoogte. Hoeveel je neemt hangt een beetje af van hoe precies pas je hem wilt hebben, je verliest zeker 2 x 1/2 cm voor de naden en hij moet er wel in passen natuurlijk!
(bij sony (afm. 6 3/4 inch/17 cm bij 4 1/4 inch/11 cm heb ik 8 1/2 inch/21,5 cm  bij 6 inch/15cm gebruikt).
Ik gebruikte 1 lapje, maar je kunt ook allerlei patchwork (vierkantjes, stroken, etc.) voor de buitenkant gebruiken natuurlijk.
- 2 restjes batting, of fleece, of andere voering ong. 1 cm rondom kleiner.
- rits

Doen:
1. Maak de buitenkant:
Centreer de batting op je buitenkantstofje, strijk en maak aan elkaar. Ik maakte gewoon een paar rechte lijnen, maar leef je uit.(doe het schuin, meander, maak hartjes, ...)

2. Maak een sandwich met je rits.
Leg de buitenkant stof met de goede kant naar boven neer, leg daarop je rits langs de bovenkant met de goede kant naar beneden, leg daarop je voering met de goede kant naar beneden, speld en stik (met je ritsvoetje).

3. Maak weer een sandwich met je rits - andere zijde

Vouw de stof die aan de rits vast zit met de verkeerde kanten naar elkaar. Je houdt de kant van de rits waar nog geen stof aan zit aan de bovenkant. Negeer nu de stof die er al aan zit. Leg de andere buitenkant met de goede kant naar boven neer. Leg de rits daar met de goede kant naar beneden op (de kant van de rits zonder stofjes naar boven). Leg daarop weer de voering met de goede kan naar beneden. Speld en stik weer met je ritsvoetje. Nu heb je dit (let op rits half open, anders gaat het straks mis.)

4. leg nu de voering en de buitenkant stof met de goede kanten op elkaar. De kartels van de rits wijzen naar de buitenkantstof. Speld rondom en stik daarna rondom (krap voetje breed), laat in de onderkant van de voering een stukje open om te keren. knip de hoekjes voorzichtig schuin af.

5. Keer, pas, strijk en maak het gat in de voering dicht met de machine of de hand. 

Klaar is klara! Heb je vragen, laat het even weten!

iPad cover

My Mother in Law had her birthday. I made her a new iPad sleeve. She liked the other one so much! I used my own tutorial. 


Mijn schoonmoeder was jarig en ik maakte een nieuwe iPad sleeve voor haar nieuwe iPad. Ik gebruikte mijn eigen tutorial. Dit keer met een kant en klare knie appel er op!

Perfect travel & summer sewing - give english paper piecing a try!

Long time no see - I had one very up and down emotional week. My last grandmother passed away. She would have been 96 in june. It was her time, but still sad. Alexander got some good news at work and the boys were sick in a row. After this rollercoaster ride we left for a little holliday. 

We were in Belgium at the coast enjoing the weather and each other! We had a wonderfull week, I'll share some pictures at the end of the post. When summer is coming near, I start to think of things I can do without my sewing machine around, since we usually visit campsites during summer and it won't fit in the car with everything that has to come. As sewing is my hobby, it's a strange idea that you can't do it when your free from work! Last summer I started at hexagons and this summer I added a diamons paperpiecing project. The hexagons aren't finished, my Alexander keeps making jokes how it will be a queensize bedspread for when we are going to retire.... Since retiring ages are only going up, I don't feel much pressure yet, but it's slow progress. I love doing this in front of the tv (I can't sit still if my hands aren't busy), in the car and on holidays in general. I'll explain how it works for the dutch readers. There is a good english tutorial over at Amy Gunsons blog.

Mijn laatste post was lang geleden. Ik had eerst een hele gekke week waarin mijn laatste omaatje verleed. Ze zou 96 zijn geworden in juni, dus dat is een prachtige leeftijd, maar toch verdrietig. Toen kreeg Alexander goed nieuws op zijn werk en werden de jongens direct na elkaar ziek. De dag na de begrafenis vertrokken we voor een korte vakantie naar Belgie. Daar waren we dus wel aan toe! We hebben supperlekker weer gehad, we zijn lekker bij gekomen. Ik zal aan het einde van deze post wat foto's laten zien. 

In Belgie was mijn naaimachine natuurlijk niet mee en van de zomer gaat hij ook niet mee op vakantie. Dan moeten we dus naaiprojecten zonder machine bedenken. Naaien is zeker een hobby van mij en om dat niet te kunnen doen op de momenten dat je vrij bent is natuurlijk gek. Vorig jaar startte ik het Hexagon project. Ik blogde daar al eerder over hier en hier. Heel veel televisie avondjes verder (en heel veel pauzes) ben ik nu hier: Er zitten nu al tenminste 200 hexagons in!

Hexagons - juni 2012

Dit is English paper piecing. Je kan dan met meerder vormen doen. Hexagons zijn populair (in verschillende maten), maar je kan allerlei vormen kiezen. Ik doe het met restjes (scrappy), maar je kunt ook allerlei patronen ervan maken, ook met ander maten en vormen. Een paar voorbeelden:

Ik ben nu een 2e projectje gestart met ruiten of diamonds. Ik maak er sterren van (sixpointed stars) op een witte achtergrond. Ze zijn wat groter, dus het gaat wat sneller...

Wil je het ook eens proberen? Het is echt niet moeilijk...

Benodigdheden

Je kan zelf malletjes maken, je kan ze ook bestellen. Dat kan met of zonder een houten malletje om de stof te snijden of te knippen. Ik maakte voor de hexagons zelf een snijmalletje door een stuk karton net wat groter te knippen dan het papiertje. Voor de diamonds kocht ik hem, dat is net wat steviger. Je kan hier of hier kijken, of naar je eigen quiltwinkel gaan. Verder heb je naal, draad, een schaar en stofjes nodig. Je kan restjes gebruiken, of speciale stof kopen....

Stap 1: knip of snij de stof op maat

Met de malletjes snijd je stofjes op maat. Ik snij er meestal een hele voorraad in 1 keer.

Stap 2: Maak de stof aan de papieren mallen

Dit kun je met een rijgsteek doen, of je kan het plakken met een speciaal niet permanente lijm stiftje. Dat laatste heb ik ook gedaan, werkt goed, maar de stift droogt uit als je hem te lang laat liggen en het is vrij prijzig. We sneller. Met de rijgsteek gaat het als volgt, als je dat snapt, kan je ook plakken:

Je legt het papieren malletje op de verkeerder kant van de stof in ongeveer het midden. Je kan het vast spelden, ik doe dat niet, want dan prik ik me. Je kiest één zijde en vouwt die om het papieren malletje heen. Ik begin altijd halverwege zo'n zijde. je rijgt 2 steken, vouwt de volgende zijde om en steekt de naald daarin, etc.

NB 1: Hecht niet aan of af, maar laat de laatste steek de eerste overlappen. Dan kun je de draad straks makkelijk verwijderen, maar gaat hij niet te makkelijk los.

NB2: Laat je niet verleiden om een te lange draad te nemen, dat lijkt makkelijker, maar zorg voor knopen en gedoen.

Het resultaat is dan dit met diamonds, en het zelfde met hexagons:

Ook hiervan maak ik er heel veel achter elkaar. Pas als ze bijna op zijn, maak ik weer een hele batch nieuwe!

Stap 3: Het aan elkaar naaien van de diamonds of hexagons

Leg 2 stofjes met de goede kanten op elkaar. Kies een hoek en hecht daar wel aan. Dat kan door 2 steekjes op de zelfde plek te doen, of een knoopje te maken. Naai met een bovenhand steekje de naad dicht, steek de naald elke keer net naast het kartonnetje, naai het kartonnetje dus niet mee. Klaar, pak de volgende... Als een malletje helemaal omringd is met andere malletjes, mag het papiertje eruit.

Echt leuk om te doen, maar een beetje geduld moet je wel hebben! Vragen? Mail me even.
