Midna is a recurring character in The Legend of Zelda series,[5][6] first appearing in Twilight Princess as Link's companion.

Biography

Twilight Princess

Midna not wearing the Fused Shadow

Midna is one of the Twili, a race descended from a confederacy of sorcerers banished to the Twilight Realm by the Golden Goddesses in an event known as the Interloper War.[7][8][9] Before the events of Twilight Princess, Zant, a conspiring servant of the royal family, overthrows Midna and places a curse on her. The curse causes her to lose her magical abilities and physically transforms her into an imp-like form.[4] With her piece of Fused Shadow, Midna leaves the Twilight Realm to acquire and assemble the remaining pieces and exact her vengeance using its power.

In Ordona Province, she witnesses Link transform into a wolf before being taken away by a Shadow Beast. Midna follows Link to his prison cell in the Castle Sewers and offers to help him escape under the condition that he obey her.[10][11] The pair exit the sewers and go to the tower in Hyrule Castle where Princess Zelda is imprisoned. After the meeting with Princess Zelda, Midna again offers to help Link save Ilia and the Ordon children if he agrees to be her servant.[12]

Once Link finds the first Fused Shadow in the Forest Temple, Midna reveals that it is the item she was looking for, but refuses to explain its purpose until Link finds the other two pieces.[13]

Once Link and Midna collect all the Fused Shadows, the usurper Zant confronts them in the Spring of the Spirit Lanayru and takes the Fused Shadows. He attempts to persuade Midna to join him,[14] but she refuses. He then restrains her in front of the Light Spirit Lanayru, who gravely injures her by overexposing her to light. With Midna nearing death, Link rushes her to Princess Zelda.[15] Midna asks Zelda to tell Link how to break his curse and where to locate the Mirror of Twilight.[16][17] Princess Zelda, realizing Midna's true identity and touched by her consideration of the world of light despite her injuries, sacrifices her physical form to revive Midna.[18][19] Moved by Link and Zelda's selfless acts, Midna vows to save Hyrule.[20]

The duo travel to the Gerudo Desert, where Midna asks for Link's assistance in finding the Mirror of Twilight.[21] After traversing the Arbiter's Grounds, Midna and Link find the Mirror Chamber where they are greeted by the Sages. They learn that the Mirror of Twilight has been broken into four Mirror Shards, with only one remaining in the frame. Midna and Link recover the other three Shards and return to the Mirror Chamber. The Mirror of Twilight mends itself and opens a portal to the Twilight Realm. The Sages reveal that Midna is the ruler of the Twili.[22] Midna and Link travel to the Twilight Realm, where they confront Zant in the throne room of the Palace of Twilight. Zant lashes out at Midna in an unhinged fit of rage and exposes Ganondorf as his "god" and the source of his magic.[23] Once Link defeats Zant in battle, Midna is shocked to see that her curse is not lifted; Zant gloats that only Ganondorf's defeat would restore her original state.[24] Enraged, she uses the Fused Shadows to tear Zant apart. Midna is amazed by the power of her ancestors' magic.[25]

Midna's transformation

The duo returns to Hyrule Castle to defeat Ganondorf and rescue Princess Zelda.[26][27] Using the Fused Shadows, Midna transforms into a colossal spider-like beast and conjures a trident to pierce the barrier surrounding the castle. In the castle's throne room, Link subdues Possessed Zelda and Midna drives Ganondorf from Zelda's body. Midna and Link fight a transformed Ganon and subdue the beast. When Ganondorf's spirit re-emerges, Midna resolves to confront him alone. She warps Link and Princess Zelda to safety in eastern Hyrule Field and transforms again.

Ganondorf is victorious over Midna and emerges in Hyrule Field holding a piece of the Fushed Shadow, which he then crushes in his hand. With the help of Princess Zelda and her Bow of Light, Link defeats Ganondorf using the Master Sword. After the battle, the Light Spirits descend upon the field to revive Midna. With Ganondorf defeated, Midna's curse is finally broken, and thus she is restored to her true form.

With Hyrule brought to order, Midna bids Link and Princess Zelda farewell in the Mirror Chamber.[28][29][30] Shedding a single shining tear, Midna says, "Link... I... See you later..." and sends the magical tear into the Mirror of Twilight, causing it to crack.[31] Midna races to the platform to return to the Twilight Realm. She turns around and smiles at Link as the portal takes her away. The Mirror of Twilight bursts and the only link between the two worlds is severed.

Midna's Descriptions

EnemyDescription
At the City in the Sky:

Take a good look at his shield!

When he holds it up, that's your chance!

When he's holding his shield up, your arrows will just bounce off...but that's exactly the chance you need!

If your timing is right, you could use it to pull him down.

Hey, it's that overgrown bird again. Maybe it's lonely because it can't fly down here...

Isn't there some spot where we can latch on to it? Then we could pull it down to us!

Once Link latches onto Argorok's tail with the Clawshot and drops down or is thrown off:

That thing's so big, LinkAppears in-game as the player's chosen name.! Your weight alone won't pull it down, I'm pretty sure.

What are you supposed to do in a situation like that? Come on, now! Remember!

Once Link pulls Argorok down by the tail using the Iron Boots:

That thing's not going to come down if we just sit here waiting for it...

You won't have anywhere to run to, but you should try and get close and pull it down again.

Once Link pulls Argorok down a second time, revealing its weak spot:

You saw its back, didn't you? I bet that's its weak spot!

We need to find a way to get up on its back.

Once Link Clawshots a Peahat:

Maybe we could get on its back using those plants floating all around it.

Its back is its weak spot! Go for that, will you?!

Once Link attacks Argorok's weak spot:

That's it, keep attacking its weak spot! If you don't stay sharp, that fire will engulf you!

That is one big spider...

And it's even got a big nasty eye on its back... If that thing cast its gaze on you, you'd be helpless...

Once shot down with an Arrow:

Your best shot is going to be after you've knocked it down!

If you don't hurry up and attack it, it'll crawl back up to the ceiling!

Once struck with the Sword:

That thing is so heavily armored, your sword just bounces right off...

It's not just big. It's HUGE! I don't know if any of your items could do much to it, LinkAppears in-game as the player's chosen name....

If Link moves a statue when Armogohma isn't there:

It doesn't do much good to drop it in front of a statue if you don't move the statue once it's there!

You have to watch its movements while it's crawling around on the ceiling!

Once struck with a statue via the Dominion Rod:

What a handy little spider-crusher!

Go on! Just whack away!

Second form:

It sure is a persistent bug... Even if it is just its eye, it's still alive...

But now that its armored shell is gone, you should be able to finish it off with your blade!

And she seemed so quiet, too... I guess that's the power of the Mirror of Twilight...

Let's get her out of that ice-covered shell and release her from the spell!

Once Blizzeta is hit with the Ball and Chain:
Let's help her out! We need to break more ice each time!
Once the second phase of the battle starts:

Don't get distracted by the columns of ice that keep falling...

Avoid the falling ice columns and aim for the last big one that falls!

Once Blizzeta is hit with the Ball and Chain:
That's the way! Watch the ice columns as they're reflected in the floor and break the biggest one!
Bulblin squad in Goron Mines:
Ugh, too many enemies to count... Deal with the ones nearby with your sword by pressing B Button. Press Y Button or X Button to use your bow on the rest.

Looks like this guy is the guard... Sounds like he's mistaken you for an intruder, and I doubt he'll listen to reason. You'll have to fight him.

Whoa! Look at how the floor tilts! Talk about unstable. You'd better stick yourself to it so you don't fall off!

Once Dangoro rolls into a ball after being struck repeatedly in the belly:
Don't be fooled by his size! He's like the ones on the mountain path: a Goron who can't really do anything but roll!
Once Link tosses Dangoro into the lava:

Wow! He's a tenacious guy...He's lucky he's a Goron. Otherwise he wouldn't be getting back up here after falling into the lava!

Just keep tossing him into the lava until he quits getting back up!

Doesn't he know how dangerous that is, swinging a big metal ball around in such a small place?!

It's too dangerous to get close to him, so let's use the ceiling to get over to his other side!

Once Darkhammer throws the Ball and Chain:

Hey, look at his backside... He's covered in strong armor all over, but his tail's exposed!

After he throws that ball, do you think you could get behind him and whack his tail over and over?

Once Link strikes Darkhammer's tail:
That's the way! Go for him after he throws that ball!

I have no idea what to do against these knight things!

Just try using the sword techniques you know, LinkAppears in-game as the player's chosen name.!

When asked again:

The only thing to do is try all your sword techniques on it until you find one that works!

Don't worry! You have what it takes to beat him, LinkAppears in-game as the player's chosen name.!

Before Link uses his Senses:
Use your senses to find enemies you can't see with your eyes!
Once Link uses his Senses:
When he comes in to attack, that's when we need to counter with our own attack!
Once Death Sword becomes visible and Link is in wolf form:
You can't do anything about an enemy circling in the air while you're in beast form!
When Link is in human form:
This thing just depresses me... Get him down here and introduce him to your blade!
When Death Sword is stunned:
LinkAppears in-game as the player's chosen name., hurry! Now's your chance!
Once Death Sword regains movement:
You're going to have to use both your wolf powers and your human skills!
There's something spooky in the air...
After Deku Toad drops from the ceiling:

Ughh... It's creepy...

I can't stand pimply things like this...

This one's all yours!

When asked again:
I told you this one's all yours! Stop calling me! That thing's gross!
Once Deku Toad is defeated:

Eww... That wasn't good for my appetite...

Hey! What do you suppose is in the treasure chest that thing spit up? It's gross, but you should probably open it...

To think that there was a monster lurking deep inside the temple...

These things will gobble up a little guy like you in one bite! If you don't want that to happen, you'd better keep your guard up!

When asked again:

Those things look like idiots with their mouths open like that...

Put something in those things' mouths to shut them up!

After Link bombs one head:
Eee hee! One more!
After Link bombs both heads:

It...didn't like that...

I don't think it will be as easy this time around. Don't get eaten!

Once Ook appears:

Hey, that guy... Isn't that the boss monkey?!

He brought an exploding bug! Maybe he's trying to help?

After Link uses the Gale Boomerang to retrieve a Bombling from Ook:
Hey! Take that bug the monkey's holding and hit that thing in the head! Hurry or it'll snack on you!
Once Link uses one of Ook's Bomblings on a head:

I think we have a chance...

That monkey's a good guy! Use his help and destroy this thing!

The fact that it could change a Goron into a beast like this proves that the power was forbidden for a reason...
Once Fyrus releases a fire wave:
Hey! Did you see his forehead? I'm sensing some powerful magic coming out of that shining spot on his forehead...
When Link returns to the boss room after a Game Over,[verification needed] or after the player saves and quits mid-battle:
That shining eye on his forehead is releasing some powerful magic. I bet if you shoot it with your bow, you might be able to weaken him!
Once Link shoots an Arrow at Fyrus's weak spot:
Can't you use those chains around his ankle to stop him from moving around? He's all out of sorts! Now's your chance!
Once Link grabs one of Fyrus's chains:
Look at the ground! Doesn't it look like the rocks you stuck to on your way here? If your feet keep slipping, why don't you try to stick them to the ground?
Once Fyrus falls to the ground:
As soon as he collapses, you've got to go for his crystal eye!
Once Link strikes Fyrus's weak point with his Sword:
Defeating something that big and burly isn't going to be easy. There you go! Keep doing that and then keep attacking that eye on his forehead!
Don't get distracted by his size, LinkAppears in-game as the player's chosen name.! Watch his moves!
Once Ganon disappears after being shot at with an Arrow:

Did you see his belly?

That's where he was injured long ago, during his sentencing.

That's his weak point!

Once Link strikes Ganon's weak point:
Just like that, LinkAppears in-game as the player's chosen name.!
Dodge his charge and attack his stomach after he stops!
Once Ganon starts to dodge Arrows:

He's changing his strategy! Not only can you not confuse him, but you won't be able to attack!

Beast against beast! How about matching an evil beast against a sacred beast?!

Rather than run around, let him charge you from the front!

I'm going to do what you've been doing, LinkAppears in-game as the player's chosen name., only with my power.

Once Link turns into Wolf Link:
That's it, LinkAppears in-game as the player's chosen name.!
I'll take care of his attacks, so you counterattack when he's down!
First battle:

Ugh... This doesn't look good for that kid.

If that guy rushes you, you won't stand a chance.

Do your best to avoid him and slice him as you pass!

Second battle:

This guy again... What a pest...

I'm telling you, it's a waste, no matter how many times you battle him. Teach him a lesson!

Second battle once Link hits King Bulblin's shields twice:

What's this guy's problem? Looks like he went and got a nice pair of matching shields!

What an idiot... He's got his sides protected, but his front is completely open.

Don't waste time going hand-to-hand with this guy. Use a projectile when the time is right!

Second battle when asked again:

Take a good look at that guy and you should see a bunch of gaps in his armor. Fire arrows into those spots!

This guy fights dirty, so there's no reason we can't fight dirty, too!

Third battle:

Not this guy again!

Hmph! Let's teach him that flailing a giant axe around is NEVER a good idea!

I can't see a thing... Look, the only thing we can do is dive down and have a look around, so hurry up and do it!
When Link is diving to the bottom:
Come on! Hurry up and dive so we can see what's on the bottom!
If Link returns to the surface of the water:
What are you doing floating around? There's no going back up now. The only thing you can do is dive!
Once Link approaches the protruding tentacle and Morpheel's mouth emerges:

Hey! Don't get too close to those tentacles!

If you get careless and get tangled up in its tentacles, you're in for a nasty fate...

Once Morpheel's eyeball moves up into a tentacle and back into the main body:

Looks like that eyeball is pretty important to him... See if you can't Z Button (Wii)-target it and yank it right out of the tentacle!

Get too close and it'll attack you, so make sure to leave yourself some room!

Once the eyeball is pulled out with the Clawshot:
So, it'sshould be: its [sicThis is not an error. This word was misspelled in the original source.] eyeball really is the key? Good! Keep aiming for that eye!
Once Morpheel full body emerges from the sand and starts to swim:

Don't let its size scare you!

Even if it's huge, it should still have a weak spot!

Once Link swims up to Morpheel:

Did you see its back? It's got an eyeball there, too!

Just like you did last time... Target its eye with Z Button (Wii), get close, and attack using your sword!

Once Link attacks the eye on Morpheel's back:

Keep it up! Get it!

If you get in front of it, it'll suck you in, so you've got to swim up alongside it.

Based on his size, he looks like the boss monkey...but those other ones were friendly. He looks pretty hostile!

We're on a very important mission here, so knock down anything that gets in your way!

When asked again:

Hey! If you have time to talk, hurry up and take that guy down!

That guy's dancing at the top of that pillar! I think he's making fun of you!

While that fool is up there dancing, that's your chance to take him down...

When asked a third time:
You still don't get it? When that guy's at the top of a pillar, shake it to knock him down!
If we waste time dealing with this, we’ll never find Zant! Don't bother yourself with those little nuisances! Attack Zant's image!
When Link is in human form:

I have a bad feeling about this... Let's hurry up and finish him off.

Ohh... I get it! You can't see it with your human vision. In that case, why not use your beast senses?

When asked again:
Wolves can see things with their senses that humans can't, right?
When Link is in wolf form:
I have a bad feeling about this... Let's hurry up and finish him off.
After defeating one Poe:

We have to search for the three ghosts that fled...

But we'd get destroyed just looking around randomly...

You don't suppose there's any clue as to their whereabouts, do you?

Let's look for a clue that'll help us find those ghosts!

After obtaining the Poe Scent:
Let's use the scent of those three ghosts that fled to track them down!
After defeating two Poes:

Two more ghosts left for us to catch...

Be careful, and make sure you don't get lost trying to figure out which scent you're chasing.

After defeating three Poes:
Good. We're down to one ghost... Just follow that last scent trail!

These must be the things that were after the monkey... Could this all be the work of that little guy with the horn?

I don't know my way around here too well, so try not to get lost.

No matter how many times you defeat these things, they keep coming back, LinkAppears in-game as the player's chosen name.!

We ought to lay down a field of dark energy and beat them all at once!

LinkAppears in-game as the player's chosen name.! Pay attention!
In reference to Skull Kid's Puppets:

These must be the things that were after the monkey... Could this all be the work of that little guy with the horn?

I don't know my way around here too well, so try not to get lost.

Ugh! Quick little guy, isn't he?

But hey, he's not trying to run away at all, is he? He's...trying to lead us somewhere!

Why, that little... He likes to joke around, huh?

Let's get him while he's entranced by that horn!

What is this thing?! No matter how much we tear it apart, it just comes right back together again...

Are we gonna have to bash his bones into bits to keep him from reforming?!

This thing uses the flowing sands to protect itself. What a creep...

Give it to him with that little spinner of yours, LinkAppears in-game as the player's chosen name.!

Once Link inflicts damage with the Spinner:

Take a good look...

He may be ridiculously huge, but there's only one bone that's holding him up...

If we could just destroy that one support...

After completing the first phase:
...Is he...dead? Somehow, I don't feel very relieved by this...
After starting the second phase:

Yikes! I guess that wasn't the end of it! Staying down here is just going to make it easier for him to do away with you, LinkAppears in-game as the player's chosen name.!

Ride the rail on the wall to climb up top!

Once Link takes damage:

Yeah... You can't attack while you're riding the rail...

If things look dangerous, jump across to the rail on the opposite wall!

Keep doing that until he gets close, then do it again to ram into him!

As Link approaches the battle area:

The last insect should be around here...

I get a weird feeling about this place... Don't let your guard down.

Once the Twilit Bloat emerges from the lake:
What?
Once Link sees the Twilit Bloat using his Senses:

What... What is that thing? I've never seen anything like it!

Ugh, I HATE creepy things like that! Do something, fast!

When the Twilit Bloat is flipped over:

Ugh... I don't want to touch it!

H-Hey! While it's flipped over, jump on and punish it!

Once the Twilit Bloat is defeated:
Hey! Hurry up and pick up the Tear of Light that it dropped!

Ugh! Another pest!

I guess he felt like he needed to call a friend!

When it comes close to earth, jump on it and try to pull it down!

You can't let Zant's crazy movements confuse you...

As long as you use the light of the Twilight Realm to your advantage, you'll be fine, LinkAppears in-game as the player's chosen name..

The light in your blade can drive back Zant's magic power!

Midna's true form

In her cursed state, Midna has a diminutive impish form with long arms, jagged elven ears, large red eyes (one covered by the Fused Shadow she wears), a snub nose, and a crooked fang.

In her true form, Midna stands taller than Link or Princess Zelda. She possesses long orange hair, red eyes, and a pale bluish complexion. She wears a black, full-bodied hooded cloak with Twili patterns and symbols woven into the fibers. Underneath, she wears a half-dress that reveals one leg bare. Her regalia consists of a metallic headdress with a red gemstone-inlaid pendant covering her forehead.

Like other Twili, Midna's body is adorned with glowing aquamarine markings.

Personality

At first, Midna is often condescending towards Link, often jeering at him and insulting his intelligence.[32][33] She is also disdainful of Princess Zelda,[34] considering her to be coddled by a "carefree youth" and a "life of luxury".[35] At times she demonstrates a playfully morbid sense of humor.[36]

After Zant ambushes Link and Midna, her demeanor shifts drastically. Near death, she pleads for Link to help himself and continue without her.[37] After being saved by Link and Princess Zelda, she becomes determined to save the World of Light as well as her own.[38] From then on, Midna is more amiable and trusting with Link.[citation needed] By the end of the game, Midna takes a kinder view of Princess Zelda and her people.[39]

Abilities

Midna pretending to be Ilia

Midna is able to Warp Wolf Link through Portals,[40] and can also Warp large objects such as the Molten Shard and a section of the Bridge of Eldin. She can disintegrate and reintegrate her body, allowing her to pass through walls and other objects. Midna can also transform her appearance: she temporarily assumes the form of Ilia and then Colin to convince Link to do her bidding.

As the true ruler of Twili, only Midna can destroy the Mirror of Twilight completely.[41]

Gameplay

Midna's function in Twilight Princess is comparable to Link's companions in previous titles: she teaches gameplay mechanics and offers hints on what to do or where to go next. When Link is a Wolf, Midna rides atop his back and can physically assist him in various ways. She can transform her hair into a glowing arm that can pull high Switches. Midna can also help Wolf Link jump to distant platforms by floating over to them and having Link Target her. In battle, Midna can create a field of dark energy to help the young hero lock on to enemies and attack them in rapid succession.[42][43] This dark energy attack is essential to defeating Shadow Beasts.

Midna hides in Link's shadow when he is in human form.[44][45]

In the game's Legend Mode, Cia is said to have transformed Midna into her imp form and she is now searching for Cia in order to be changed back. She is first encountered as a villain by Lana and Agitha in "Land of Twilight", having stolen Agitha's Goddess Butterfly after learning it could guide her to Cia. She is soon tracked down by Lana and defeated, conceding defeat and surrendering the butterfly. Trivia

  • During development of Twilight Princess, Tetra from The Wind Waker was used as a placeholder for Midna when riding Wolf Link.[47]
  • Midna's voice clips feature English lines jumbled up and distorted, creating the gibberish heard in the game.[48]
  • When Link is in Wolf form but does not have Midna riding on his back, her shadow still appears over him. If Link is in front of anything reflective, such as the ice from Snowpeak Ruins, Midna will have no reflection.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Midna's left hand is miscolored grey on the Wolf Link trophy, despite the rest of her arm being the correct black.
