Common questions
What's the difference between 404 and a VPN?
A VPN masks your IP address. Browser fingerprinting ignores your IP entirely. It identifies you through the combination of signals your browser exposes: fonts, screen resolution, hardware concurrency, rendering behavior, and dozens more. 404 changes those signals so your browser looks like everyone else's. A VPN does not do this.
Do I need technical knowledge to use 404?
No. 404+ ships as a desktop app with a graphical interface. You select a profile, launch your browser from the app, and the fingerprint is handled automatically. No command line required.

What platforms does 404 support?
The 404+ app runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Supported browsers are Chrome and Firefox. Additional browsers are on the roadmap.
Is my data ever sent to your servers?
No. 404 runs entirely on your machine. Profile updates are downloaded as static files. There is no telemetry, no usage data, and no account required to run the app. The product does not depend on a hosted 404 backend handling your browsing traffic or session data.
What infrastructure does 404 rely on?
404 does not require us to operate a product-side service for your browsing sessions. There is no hosted control plane, no account system, and no remote processing layer that your traffic has to pass through. The website itself is served on Cloudflare's serverless infrastructure, but the product is designed to run locally rather than depend on our own backend infrastructure.
What is open source about 404?
The core browser configuration layer is open source so you can audit exactly what signals are changed and how. The update distribution and licensing layer is proprietary. The repository link is in the footer.
How does 404 make money if you aren't selling my data?
We make money when people pay us directly. That's it. If you self-host, we get nothing from you financially, and that's fine. There's no ad network, no data broker relationship, no hidden revenue stream. The business model is: you find 404 useful, you pay for the app. If you don't need the app, the self-hosted version is free and always will be.
