The train out of Urumqi rocked a little as it picked up speed, and I pressed my forehead against the glass and watched the city give way to not much at all, scrubland the color of an old bruise, mountains sitting far off and refusing to get any closer no matter how long I looked at them. An hour and change like this, half asleep, and then without much warning the ground turned green. Rows of it, straight as rulers, running out to the edge of what I could see.

Today marks the ninth Chinese #DoctorsDay. Observed on August 19 every year since 2018, the day honors doctors and other medical professionals for their contributions to #publichealth.
By the end of 2025, China had 16.12 million healthcare workers, including 5.306 million practicing and assistant physicians. Average life expectancy rose by 3.85 years to 79.25 years between 2012 and 2025, while the infant mortality rate fell to 3.8 per 1,000 live births, highlighting improvements in the country's healthcare system.
China aims to raise average life expectancy to 80 years by 2030 under the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030). Looking ahead to the goal of building a Healthy China by 2035, medical professionals will continue working to improve healthcare and promote better health for all.

The sky outside had gone that deep, held-open blue that skies do when they're not quite willing to turn to night. Six days in, I had stopped being surprised by how long the light lasted here. What surprised me instead was that I'd started counting down without meaning to. This was the last night.
