Virtual WonderCon 2020 Sketch List UPDATE 5.0 Still going...

Still drawing sketch 11 - but it's a good one, a non-comic character request that I've never drawn before.

SO, I'm continuing down the WC list as I haven't had time to start the next list. I have notified everyone who was initially contacted to say this last night. 

I will probably do a NEW LIST to coincide with the cancelled Heroes Con and, 
definitely for San Diego Comic Con. 

I might also do something special when my new book, ADVENTUREMAN, ships June 10th!

Avenging Spider-Man #9 Cover Art Step by Step

 Here is my process for creating the cover to Avenging Spider-Man #9 (July 2012) featuring Captain Marvel and Spider-Man. 

Didn't have much to go off, so this is what I did!

Here's the  1" x 2" roughs drawn in my sketchbook and then

 adjusted and colored in Photoshop that I sent in to Marvel for approval.

Pencil stage drawn on 13 x 19 inch 2 Ply Bristol Board with HB and Light Blue lead.

Finished pencils.

Rachel inks over my pencils using a Winsor Newton Series 7 #2 Sable Brush and FW Acrylic Ink

First pass at colors in Photoshop CS3 using a Wacom Graphics Tablet (circa 2001) at 7 x 10.6 inches and 800dpi in RGB using Channels.

Final colors and coloring of line art on a separate "Screen" Layer .

VOILA!

Cool to see that this has held up! I would like to work on the clouds some more in the color stage ... c'est la vie...

Spider-Gwen #14 Cover Step by Step Part 3 Color

Here's the Part 3 of the Step by Step of how we made the cover art!

Flats

The first stage of color is called flats - flatting allows me to choose an area to color at any point throughout the coloring process.

Initial Rough In

I colored this on my Cintiq 13 HD using Photoshop CS3 .

Here I rough in quickly all the medium lights and darks on the figures and cast initial shadows.

Background

Using the Pencil Tool on the figure and a customized brush for texture on the clouds.

I used the Gradient Tool for the Background.

And I use a Custom Brush for the Clouds.

Coloring Line Art

At this point I like to color the line art... especially the interior edges and the edges facing the strongest light. 

 Of course, I lose as much of the line as possible - especially as I move away from the "camera".

Rachel likes to start inking with the main figures.

Rachel inks over my pencils with a Windsor Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable #2 Brush and Dr. Martens Hi Carb Ink to ink the covers with.

Here's the Part 1 of the Step by Step of how we made the cover art!

COVER SKETCH

My initial sketches for the cover submitted to Marvel. First time I've ever drawn Spider-Gwen professionally ... looked forward to this one!

Roughs were drawn at 2" x 3" in my sketchbook using Warm Grey Copics then colored in Photoshop CS3.

Initial Rough In

Just quickly drawn in with a Col Erase Light Blue Pencil.

Drawn in and HB lead on 12" x 18" Bristol Board .

Really happy with Gwen, so went right into finishes.

Gwen!

Nailing down Spidey's exact positioning. He's such a "flexible" character that you can really put him into almost any position.

Smartest thing to do at this point is go back to my initial sketch and try to mimic that.

Love drawing Spidey's facial anatomy!

Nailing down the 3 Point Perspective Grid here for New York City.

Further finishes on the parts of Spidey I'm happy with.

I knew I wanted to color the background details, so I saved that for myself to do instead of just "busy-ing" up my pencils :-)
