IMHO they were simply the best big band around in those years. And believe me there was strong competition, the Duke was still around and so were Basie and Hamp.  But when it came to hardbop it was hard to find a finer contender than the KCFBBB.

GEORGE ROBERT / TOM HARRELL QUINTET

Time for something a bit more recent.  Here is the first album of the George Robert-Tom Harrell Quintet which is also George Robert's second album as a leader.

His first album – entitled First Encounter – was recorded in New York City in 1984 with Niels Lan Doky, Ron McClure & Klaus Suonsaari (CD re-issue on Polystar Records, 2005)

One of the finest jazz musicians born in Switzerland, altoist George Robert has long considered his main influences to be Charlie Parker and Phil Woods. He started on piano when he was eight, and clarinet at ten, playing with a family band that included his four brothers.

 Robert switched permanently to alto as a teenager. In 1980, he moved to the United States to study at Berklee, settling in New York in 1984. Robert recorded his first album that year and in 1987, formed a quintet that he co-led with trumpeter Tom Harrell on and off through 1992.

This album was recorded in Lausanne, Switzerland during their '87 European tour.  The quintet features George Robert (alto saxophone, soprano saxophone), Tom Harrell (trumpet, flugelhorn), Dado Moroni (piano), Reggie Johnson (bass), Bill Goodwin (drums)

On AMG Scott Yanow displays a typically American patronising attitude towards non-US players: George Robert who is credited as “the leader” “plays quite well” but it is because of Tom Harrell that the album becomes “most notable”.

Pure baloney, just forget about the “names”. Tom Harrell is excellent indeed but the album is most notable because the music cooks!  What strikes the listener is how cohesive and “tight” this combo sounded on this first date.

Then Yanow goes on “ Harrell is actually much more boppish than usual, probably due to Robert's inspiration; the leader being  most influenced by Phil Woods”.  Fact is that Harrell was a key member of the Phil Woods Quintet in the eighties.  Actually it may be interesting to compare this album with some of the works he did with Phil Woods during the same period.

FESTIVAL SPECIAL - FRED BUNGE ENSEMBLE / VERA AUER COMBO / SOUND CAVE COMBO / HELMUT WEGLINSKI QUINTET

Fans of rare Eurojazz, rejoice! Our man Onxidlib has unearthed another rare EP on German Brunswick.  It is a compilation of four small combos recorded at the occasion of the 4th German Jazz Festival in 1956.  A few (vaguely) familiar names (at least to me): Jean-Louis Chautemps, and the Belgians (Christian Kellens, Marcel Peeters, Alex Scorier).  Helmut Weglinski, we’ve already encountered on the Modern Jazz Studio Nr 1 album.  Fred Bunge played with Kurt Edelhagen band in the 50s.  Vera Auer is a mysterious performer, one of the few females involved in the early days of the European jazz scene (read more here). Fritz Hartschub was a member of the Wolfgang Lauth Sextet posted last year (I was a bit hard on him but I really like his playing here).

BACK TO THE BLUES!

SAM LAY IN BLUESLAND

 Great rare blues LP

I haven’t posted a real blues album for a long while.  Blues music was my first musical love affair.  And close to fifty years later, I’m still in love with the Blues.  The blues paved the way for my discovery of rhythm & blues, soul, funk and jazz.

If it wasn't for the blues, I'd be nowhere, musically speaking.  And all that because of a few British white boys called The Stones, The Animals, The Yardbirds ...  They opened a door for me, they introduced me to Jimmy Reed, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Elmore  ...

Here is a long-forgotten, never re-issued album by great blues drummer SAM LAY (Howlin’ Wolf band, Muddy Waters, Butterfield Blues Band a.o.).

There is no mention of the musicians in the sleeve notes.

Considering the interest generated by the Kleinschuster-Goykovich session posted at the beginning of the month and in response to a request from visitors, here is another bootleg featuring the Erik Kleinschuster Sextett, this time backing Norwegian singer Karin Krog on a session recorded in Vienna in 1968.

FREDDIE BROCKSIEPER MIT SEINEM STAR-ENSEMBLE

SUPERTONE SU-45-116 (EP)

One could argue whether this EP – dating from c.1961 – qualifies as a “rarity”. Outside of Germany probably ?  Side B was re-issued on a double LP Munich Jazz 1950-1980 with a picture of Freddie Brocksieper in full drumming action on the cover.

Interesting character this Mr Brocksieper!  

Here’s what Wikipedia has to say:

Fritz "Freddie" Brocksieper (born August 24, 1912 in Istanbul, Turkey; died January 17, 1990) was a German jazz-musician, drummer, and bandleader.

He played professionally in Nuremberg beginning in 1930. In 1939 he went to Berlin. There he made recordings with the Golden Seven (1939), with Benny de Weille (1940) and Willy Berking (1940–1941), just as in the National-Socialist propaganda band Charlie and His Orchestra. His playing style on the drums was influenced above all by Gene Krupa.

The son of a Greek-speaking Jewish woman and a German engineer was able to get through National-Socialism as an essential swing musician. Freddie Brocksieper was considered a leading figure of early European big-band jazz. After the Second World War he led various bands in Stuttgart, Munich, and Berlin, and played also in American officers' clubs. With his bands he made it to the front page of Stars and Stripes. Beginning in 1957 Bavarian radio regularly broadcast live concerts from his studio in Munich.

From 1964 he played mainly in trios, and often with American soloists in Europe. In 1980 he received an award from the German Phonograph Academy.

I recommend reading the Wikipedia article on Charlie and his Orchestra.  Interestingly, it seems that  none of the musicians taking part in these propaganda recordings had much problem continuing playing after the war (although there were a couple of Belgians in the Orchestra who were considered collaborators by the Belgian authorities, and that put a stop to their musical career).

About this 45 rpm, the French would probably call it “ringuard”!  Not unlike the countless Hammond Favorites etc LPs recorded by Otto Weiss.  Much unfortunate as Otto could really swing when he wanted too.  Just listen to his contribution to Stuff Smith’s Black Violin on MPS or to Rudi Flierl ‘s Bostic Favorites on this blog.  You probably know Fred Spannuth already (see my post on Max Greger).

The session was supposedly for a LP but the record never materialised. I got the file from onxidlib who got it from someone else who got it from ... doesn’t matter.  May the gods and related entities bless the good and generous onxidlib for his invaluable contributions to this blog (and may, by the same occasion, the blessing extend to all other generous contributors).

"The Jazz-Gala-Concerts took place in West-Germany from 18 thru 23 January, 1976, enjoying live-audiences in Hamburg, Hannover, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Wiesbaden.

In a sort of co-production, Second-Channel TV-(ZDF) jazzproducer Reinhardt Knieper commissioned Hamburg's bookingagency Karste Jahnke to ask composer-arranger-bandleader Peter Herbolzheimer to organize an All Star Bigband and - since it was the opener for a regular TV jazz-series - use prominent international talent suitable, and available. Thus, an accumulation of famous jazz musicians became reality, a jazzfan's dream, with musicians which normally fill halls on their own.

Some of the most remarkable highlights (composer-arranger-soloists-credits see inside the cover) and experiences of this tour were the reunion of the famous Gerry Mulligan-Art Farmer frontline, the successful vocal performance of the fantastic drummer Grady Tate, Stan "the man" Getz in a nowadays rare bigband surrounding, Nat Adderley and his jazz-evergreens, the unique trombone of Albert Mangelsdorff and the unique trombone artistry of Slide Hampton, the social and musical consensus of everybody taking part.

In all - this LP is a document of contemporary (i.e. 70s) big band-jazz which will last for a long time. "
