Drawing from a long tradition of unabashed freaks and weirdos in NYC, the Brooklyn art rock ensemble Theophobia are about as left of the dial as pop goes. Their staunch refusal to be anyone but themselves has earned them quite the reputation in the city. This is primarily thanks to their silly freewheeling live shows – which incorporate absurdist comedy, homemade props and performance art – as well as workhorse musicianship and an eccentric approach to songwriting. In a music climate largely populated with middle-of-the-road indie rock, Theophobia stand out with a heavy emphasis on spirited charismatic performances, prominent visual components and elements of theater.

Built around the nucleus of singer-songwriters Dylan Mars Greenberg and Matt Ellin, Theophobia have indulged their wildest dreams to create a sound that straddles the line between their influences and something completely their own. Particularly inspired by the eccentricities of 70s art rock bands like Sparks, Roxy Music and the songs of Meat Loaf scribe Jim Steinman, the two trade off vocals and songwriting duties, backed by an impeccable lineup of rock and jazz musicians: guitarist Alan Worm, pianist Michael Butterly, bassist Nick Cereola and drummer Chris Michaels.

A Happy Man 01:58
There was a happy man A very happy man He worked from dusk till dawn Praying all night with the lights half on Praying all night with the lights half on And he'd like to expect God put him to the test And he would mow the lawn Baking all day in the evening sun Baking all day in the evening sun Baking all day in the evening sun... The sun went down for the girl on the hill And she danced straight back from the rat race until She was all tired out from singing this song But the girl didn't know this song goes on and on So she gave this song to the choir to sing Once the chorus began they could not stop singing So the rat racers chased her away from this town But they learned far too late that the sun won't go down If the girl is gone and the choir's off key So the whole town joined in the song naturally And they all kept singing the words that you hear In their search for the girl who had long disappeared As they sang they smashed every cup, plate and mirror In a fruitless attempt to drown out the terror Which emerges from music that crawls in your ears And it will not stop till that jam in your gears when you're dead (You're dead) You're dead, you are dead (You're dead) You're dead, you are dead (You're dead) You're dead, you are dead

(You cross the street) So I guess it’s okay if I cross now too See, I regret nothing when I’m with you (When can we meet?) Why won’t you throw me a line? I’ve got a question for you Will you still love me when I’m through? Will you love me when my soul’s no longer sentient? Will you love me when I’m dead? Will you love me when I’m buried underneath the ground? Will you love me when I’m dead? (I crossed the line) When you told me you were fine, I said “Are you okay?” And you said “What did I just say?” (You’re out of line) I turned to say you were right, but you had faded away You left a note with a bouquet It read "Love me with a light forever luminous" Will you love me when I’m dead? Will you love me when my body is anonymous? Will you love me when I’m dead? 2, 4, 6, 8, can I take you on a date? Will you love me when my soul’s no longer sentient? Will you love me when I’m dead? Will you love me when I’m buried underneath the ground? Will you love me when I’m dead?

God of War 02:51
Dad was a tad insane I knew him for years but he never remembered my name He'd fall, I'd tell him "Count to ten" He'd keep on counting but he's never getting back up again You broke the law We agreed on your silence but all you ever do is talk Son, you're gettin' five to ten You'll be up for parole but you're never getting back out again Oooooh You're like the inside of a lava lamp Always burning, always turning You're the god of war What are you fighting for? What are you fighting for, my love? What are you fighting for, my love? Man, I think I'm in a jam Well I had a dream where I didn't know who I am You're a crook! You're a cop! You're a bad piece of work! You're insane! Take the blame! You're a dick and a jerk! And I sigh Wonder why? 'Cause I'm tired of you! And I know you know you hate it when we're screaming and there's naught we can do It's like the time we went to the puppet show Always punching, always lunging You're the god of war What are you fighting for? What are you fighting for, my love? What are you fighting for, my love? Oooooh You completely ruined the best of times You'd be running with a knife, but you're the god of life Take my final advice Take my parting advice, my love Love thy neighbor and you'll be loved

The most wanted woman in Estonia She was loved by every man somehow So haunted, glum and anhedonia Finds not a drop of pride or pleasure now Don’t remember pride or pleasure, times when she was happy All the men assured themselves she’s simply out to lunch All she treasured changed like weather, soon felt trite and sappy Looked around and then she found her boys a crappy bunch The most wanted woman in Estonia Crying over by the Baltic Sea And no, she wouldn’t wanna know ya Because her life is a catastrophe So uncertain, what a burden, all is a distraction Her demeanor indicates she wants a life alone So disturbed, she closed the curtain, caused a chain reaction Now the friends she thought she knew are withered to the bone To the bone Don’t remember pride or pleasure, times when she was happy All the men assured themselves she’s simply out to lunch All she treasured changed like weather, soon felt trite and sappy Looked around and then she found her boys a crappy bunch The most wanted woman in Estonia

Chili dog incarnate Falling down on wall street Don't you think it's such a lonely sight? Well I think it's a delight And it's cold outside, the gods abide, they paint a hellscape out of life With chili dog incarnate made to take it all in strife Don't you think it's perfect? You're free To live the way you please But if you take it too far you'll get killed (You know you will!) Chili dog incarnate, pacing 'round the sidewalk He's dancing through those vaugamentary days And he's deep in a malaise And he sadly sighs, all teary eyed, see him lament his final cent It's chili dog incarnate with no way to pay to rent Some folks are worthless, but not me I'm the picture of security A lucky man from wealthy family (Ooh, hee hee!) Chili dog incarnate, he's a pauper and a fool And I don't mind the connotations too Chili dog incarnate, pretty soon he's turning tricks I wonder if he does it for a fix? Chili dog incarnate, the sake of my disbarment From Posh & Proust, my father's company (Hee hee!) I struck him 'cross the nose with a champagne glass In the New York City street Oh, can't you see? 1 and 2 and 3 and 4... So chili dog incarnate Free to walk and wander He's miserable but still allowed to fail As for me, I rot in jail I suffer daily beatings so I'm prone to profuse bleeding And despite his massive fortune, my old man will not pay bail Chili dog incarnate, don't you think it's funny How now you're better off than me though you don't have any money? And I can't renew, I can't undo, no, my entire life is through It's set in stone, I'll die alone for what I did to you So I have no purpose, but you'll see, when death comes to rescue me I'll haunt your sleep, I'll haunt your dreams at night (Sweet dreams)

Love of Ages 02:24
Anne was an aspiring actress working in a cafe called Muy Aquario She got a face tattoo of her social done down in the spokes of the barrio And by the time she turned 20, she'd been hired to ghostwrite The autobiography of frozen rain She went through so many insomniac poet boyfriends And all of them surrendered to themselves just the same So she said, "Love isn't fun, and love isn't free, no one in the universe will ever love me" Pain of ages (oh no) I can hear you All wrapped in your linens Yeah, I know Pain of ages So now she's sleeping in a hut in the country Working in a city built from steel guitar pride And see her smoking a cigar on the old back porch and all smiling and triple-fried She gives way to no lovers, no, it isn't for her And she will never feel sorry for herself anymore She just watches Evil Dead 2 on DVD and builds small clay models of the earth's inner core She's into igneous rocks, she likes '70s socks Her friends all took care of her when she got chicken pox Love of ages (oh yeah) I can hear you All crushed in your pillows Yeah, I know Love of ages Let me hear you say "love of ages" now! Love of ages Oh god Well I said that I'm doing the best that I can! I can hear you All wrapped in your linens Yeah, I know Love of ages Love of ages I can hear you

Awaken from your slumber You don't feel anything You think you're fine but soon you'll find The whittler and the king Spin sordid tales of heartache On spinwheels made from skin The skin is mine and soon I'll find The whittler is within And all the west was won in the sun But all the rest is none, it's no fun You think that you're a whittler But really you're a king As you divide and pay no mind You don't learn anything You'll wish that you're a wise man As wise as wise can be But man takes you for granted In this crumbling monarchy Make a run for it (Make a run for it) Make a run for it (Make a run for it) Make a run for the cunning, the fun of it Make a run for it (Make a run for it) What will you think When the ice pick smashes the ice rink? Why not me? Come out and face the sun Come out and face the big one Come out the mouth to gun Come out and chew the big gum Come out and beat the drum Beat on the drum the hardest Come out and play the song Come and avenge the artist Come and avenge the artist

It is very hard to navigate the street sometimes You must be careful not to stumble, trip or fall But what's interesting is everybody has their way of getting 'round their neighborhood communities and malls I thought I knew what "holy mackerel" meant I thought our space was not for rent Now that I've learned the opposite, I know how to crawl Go left, my son Go left. my son It's a game of navigation and it's surely just begun Go left, my son Go left, my son Pretty soon you will assume the role of one It is difficult to function on your feet sometimes It's a shame and an embarrassment to fail The people say: "Ha ha, that person's not equipped to live, You would be better off with four legs and a tail!" But when I finally found myself I found I could be someone else With some considerable help from my GPS (S!) S! (S!) Oh yes! Go left, my son Go left, my son See the slackers on the sidelines, they're amazed at what you've done Go left, my son Go left, my son Pretty soon you will assume the role of one There are people in my life who say I'm doing things wrong, and sometimes I think they might be right. It's as if some sort of digital worms have wriggled their way deep into the depths of my brain crevices. I[REDACTED] Now I can walk the way I breathe Nobody else can taunt or tease Now that I've learned to cross the street just like all the rest (The rest!) The rest! (The rest!) Oh yes! Go left, my son Go left, my son It's a game of navigation and it's surely just begun Go left, my son Go left, my son Pretty soon you will assume role of one Go left, my son Go left, my son See the slackers on the sidelines, they're amazed at what you've done Go left, my son Go left, my son Pretty soon you will assume the role of one Friends see my son explore his way around the town Flying and freaking out the others in the crowd Then he will get a job and be like everyone Go left Go left Go left You know, it really is true what they say. About how no matter who you are in this god forsaken world, there's always going to be someone or other determined to tell you that you must mobilize in a certain direction. Well ladies and gentleman, I'm here to tell you that there really is no one finite way in which you must go. Yes, you can go north, south, east, west, left, right or what have you. Take it from our esteemed guest speaker tonight, the one and only Milton St. Milton Senior. Take it away! Go left, giddy up Go left, giddy up Go soon, my baby Go left, giddy up Go left, giddy up Go soon, my Soon, my Soon, my Soon, my Soon, my Soon my son

Could it be love that sends me a subpoena Could it be a heart that throws the final bomb I suspect someone shot the ballerina Now I yell cut and shut the whole thing down 'Cause it's always someone else's knife According to the writer's sickly pen Suckers want a version of their life Spun in the same way over again Told Variety I do not believe In the kind of shit I put on screen Now I've been demoted to the B's And my heart is breaking in my sleep I write, produce, direct about sixteen of these a day While all the world is hanging on a string I edit, cut and paste the words I hope will make you stay But all the world is hanging on a string I could be bald or different from what you're used to I could be short or just a leading man But if I kissed you, you'd see I'm the coward 'Cause I can't own that I'm the way I am 'Cause in the blackout of '02 I got up and ran away from you Bought a bunch of ill fitting black tights Hoping I would blend in with the night But you were so moronically brave So you lit a candle at my grave Hate to disappoint you at my tomb But I crawled back straight into the womb I roll and gaff and splice the whole production on short ends While all the world is hanging on a string I fund and sell and screen the whole mistake I made at Cannes While all the world is hanging on a string (All the world is hanging on) I write, produce, direct about sixteen of these a day While all the world is falling on my head I shoot and light and dub the words you might want me to say But maybe I should trash the script instead

It might not seem like evil to you But it seems like evil tonight It might not seem it’s odd or askew But it seems like evil tonight 'Cause the dogs are howling at the blood red moon And the kids are hiding under the sheets And I thought I heard a laugh outside Heard the laugh turning into a shriek I wish the sun would come and take it away 'Cause I’ve counted every sheep in sight But there’s lightning in the sky and a storm's on the way It seems like evil tonight Yeah, it seems like evil tonight Yeah, it seems like evil tonight Yeah, it seems like evil tonight, yeah... The thunder echoes down an empty street It seems like evil tonight I feel the flames of hell on hot concrete It seems like evil tonight 'Cause I saw two eyes under an empty bed And the eyes, well they started to blink And I don’t want to assume the worst But the worst is what I’ve started to think I’m waiting up for dusk to come on through Yeah, I’m waiting up for the sunlight 'Cause wherever you are and whatever you do, it seems like evil tonight Yeah, it seems like evil tonight Here's one for the girl insane It seems like evil tonight (Seems like evil tonight) Here’s one for the distant train Yeah, it seems like evil tonight (Seems like evil tonight) Here’s one for the rusty doll Yeah, it seems like evil tonight (Seems like evil tonight) Here’s one for the face in the wall Yeah, it seems like evil tonight (Seems like evil tonight) Here’s one for the old window Yeah, it seems like evil tonight, yeah... Here’s one for the kid who knows That it seems like evil tonight Yeah, it seems like evil tonight

Part I: Conception This is the story of a man I knew He who spoke of rendezvous In Palance Park where those unsightly roam He was a little old lanky-legged donkey with a dent in the dome And you could see he would never have to work again If he... Opened up a can of fish in Mumphrey's Alley Scrumptious dishes made out of fish Munchies for the mongrels in the town's lower outskirts (Made out of what?) Made out of fish And you could see that the mule made money All because of the fish which was so delicious But the Palance Park pigs, they were harshing his gig They were shutting him down cuz he had no license And the mule had no arms, he had no legs and arms, and ahhh The prophecies of broken men Part II: Rude Awakening I don't have any friends So I stew in this cauldron of contraband Every time I pretend that I know how it ends but it doesn't make sense I guess the man, I mean the mule, who sells the fish gets rich quick while I succumb to histrionics Well, revery, they say to me, may seem like a blessing but I don't wanna hear a word about fish I don't wanna hear a word about Donkeys that bray in the dead of the night who make dishes from fish which the pigs then do fight It's astounding to see, it's a dreamer's delight So they say that I'm mad But just wait till they see how much fun I've had Drowning life in scenarios rife with escapist absurdities, right? I am wrong, so ends my song and the meaningless slaughter of character continues on Revery, say to me I'm not insane It says "I don't wanna hear a word about fish" "I don't wanna hear a word about..." Imagination profound yet insane, all that phlegm and formica polluting your brain Can't you see that it's wrong? Can't you see you're to blame? Searching for mercy, I chuck all my dreams to the sewer pipes They'll do much better to wither through weather extreme and foreboding to me Find a desk job in formal clothes, one I'll probably loathe I could work at a restaurant, whatever you want Part III: Psychotic Ascension Picture yourself on a boat on a lake You shiver and shake All of your dreams have now gone far away Why didn't they stay? Then again, practically speaking, say: "I don't think I'd rather have it any other way" Then again, fractally squeaking in rhyme Dreams can be merciful, life is unkind And the clouds in the sky part in jubilee As the fish rain in dozens surrounding me Though the fable remains still confounding me: How can the mule get around as an amputee? Now I sift through the stratosphere aimlessly On the brink of good cheer and insanity In a bid to embrace my humanity Life as it's meant to be Mumphrey's Reality

If you are down and feel your heart thump on the ground Then what you need is just the thing beyond this door (Beyond this door) You feel depressed or deep in love and you’re obsessed But once you’re done here, it won’t matter anymore And many others will walk along I know now they will pay no heed to my song But you see, that’s where they’re wrong, so wrong But you see that’s where they’re wrong (So wrong, so long) The amazing disappearing man Will astound you once and then again With your heart in your throat, You might bend down and choke But he’ll be gone before you can And you may doubt the very sight before your eyes Because the truth is so much stranger than it seems (Stranger than it seems) So open wide and brace your mind for the surprise For what I sell you is the spectacle of dreams And just a dime, sir, for such a jewel To refuse you would surely be such a fool And your life, well ain't it cruel So cruel But just step inside and you’ll drool (So cruel, you’ll drool) The amazing disappearing man Right this way, sir, through my caravan Just a turn of the switch And you’ll soon scratch that itch To believe it’s not an illusion Am I wrong, I'm so uncertain Quickly now, they draw the curtain To my fate To my fate The amazing disappearing man Will astound you once and then again With your heart in your throat You might bend down and choke But he’ll be gone before you can The amazing disappearing man Right this way, sir, through my caravan Just a turn of the switch And you’ll soon scratch that itch To believe it’s not an illusion Disappearing man
