1965 Topps - 4th Series Phillies Alumni

Having recently completed our 1965 Topps set, the final card we added was posted on my 1965 Topps blog yesterday.  The only remaining tasks are to finish up a few more of this Phillies Alumni posts, showcasing the cards of former players, coaches and managers who appeared in that iconic set.  And I'll be spending all of 2023 with this set's design as it's the basis of the 2023 Chachi custom card set.

Game 27 - Saturday Afternoon, May 11th in New York
Record - 10-17, 5th Place, 8 1/2 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  A fourth inning single from Von Hayes was the only thing that kept Sid Fernandez and Roger McDowell from no-hitting the Phillies in this 4-0 loss.

What It Means:  The Phillies would be one-hit twice in 1985 - this game and against the Giants and Vida Blue on June 2nd.  According to the Baseball Reference play index, the last time the Mets one-hit the Phillies was on October 1, 1982 with Terry Leach on the mound.  The next time the Mets would one-hit the Phillies was on August 13, 2010 with R.A. Dickey on the mound.  Opposing pitcher Cole Hamels broke up that no-hitter with a single in the sixth against Dickey.

What Happened:  Fernandez pitched the first six innings with McDowell closing out the final three innings, striking out a combined 13 Phillies batters.  Fernandez was effectively wild, also walking six batters.  Mike Schmidt struck out three times, dropping his average below the Mendoza line to .193.

Shane Rawley was charged with all four Mets runs, and he lasted just 4 2/3 innings.  The Mets weren't exactly a powerhouse offensively in this game, as their four runs scored on a ground out, a sacrifice fly, a single from Keith Hernandez and a wild pitch courtesy of Phillies reliever Pat Zachry.

Featured Card:  Watching the Friday night Dwight Gooden game on YouTube for yesterday's post reminded me that my Pop-Pop would sometimes tune in to the Mets on Channel 9 for the sole purpose of yelling at Tim McCarver.  I don't know why he despised McCarver so much, but he took great pleasure in telling the Mets' then broadcaster that he was talking too much or that he didn't make any sense.  Gary Carter also received quite a bit of my Pop-Pop's ire back then, but I always chalked that up to Carter being a good player and frequently hurting our Phillies team.

I can imagine my Pop-Pop yelling at this post too.

One Sentence Summary:  Five Cardinals home runs delivered a reality check to the Phillies, as the six game winning streak was snapped.

What It Means:  Just when I was starting to save up some extra cash for play-off tickets . . .

What Happened:  Jeremy Hellickson served up the first three Cardinals home run, including a blast from the opposing pitcher, Adam Wainwright.  Brett Oberholtzer, who now owns a 9.64 ERA, served up the final two home runs.

Featured Card:  Following up on the series preview post featuring the players swapped between the Phillies and Cardinals in October 1969, here's Tim McCarver's Kellogg's card from 1970.  The card features McCarver as a Cardinal, but the back of the card makes mention of his trade to the Phillies. Curt Flood's 1970 Kellogg's card, also featuring him as a Cardinal, also mentions the Phillies trade.

My copy of the McCarver card is looking pretty rough, and I'm assuming it spent some quality time in someone's bicycle spokes in the early 1970s.

1970 Topps Appreciation:  The Phillies first meeting with the Cardinals this season gives me the opportunity to feature all of the players involved in the infamous Phillies-Cardinals trade from October 7, 1969.  On that date, the Phillies traded Dick Allen, Jerry Johnson and Cookie Rojas to the Cardinals for Curt Flood, Byron Browne, Joe Hoerner and Tim McCarver.  Browne, Hoerner and McCarver all reported to the Phillies but Flood refused, challenging the reserve clause which bound a player to whichever team held his contract.  For much more on Flood, please see his SABR biography.

In order to show each of the players involved in this trade on their new teams, Topps didn't have to do that much work.  Hatless photos were available for all but Allen and Flood.  If you didn't look too closely at Allen's profile photo, you may have been convinced he was wearing a Cardinals hat and uniform.  Flood's photo used the then standard brim up pose, which was employed by Topps photographers in case of team changes.

Of course, Flood would never play a game for the Phillies and minor leaguers Willie Montanez and Jim Browning were sent by the Cardinals to the club instead.  Flood sat out the 1970 season and was traded by the Phillies to the Senators that November.

Phillies in the Postseaon - Part Three

Last night, Shane Victorino joined an exclusive Phillies-related club that now only includes three players:

1.  Lonnie Smith - 1980 Phillies, 1982 Cardinals and 1985 Royals
2.  Pat Burrell - 2008 Phillies and 2010 Giants
3.  Shane Victorino - 2008 Phillies and 2013 Red Sox

As far as I can tell, and please correct me if I'm wrong, these are the only three players to win their first World Series ring with the Phillies and then go on to win a second (or third) World Series ring elsewhere.  Victorino has always been a Phillies Room favorite, and I was happy to see him and his Red Sox teammates celebrate last night after their defeat of the St. Louis Cardinals.  I can't imagine what the scene most have looked like from Section 36.

St. Louis Cardinals - N.L. Central Champions - Lost World Series to the Red Sox, 4-2

The Cardinals had no one in uniform who had previously been associated with the Phillies.  Which is probably one of the reasons they lost.

Boston Red Sox - A.L. East Champions - 2013 World Champions

Victorino (2005-2012) was a huge part of Boston's winning season.  His overall numbers weren't impressive (.216 batting average in 14 games) but his 11 hits led to 12 RBIs.  Despite missing two games of the World Series with lower back issues, Victorino will forever be remembered for his three-run, Game 6 triple that got the Red Sox on the board in the clinching game.  He also came up huge against the Tigers in Game 6 of the A.L.C.S. with his second career grand slam.

Sadly, John McDonald (2013) was left off the Sox postseason roster, but he'll still earn a ring.

Finally, I'd be remiss for not at least acknowledging the retirement of long-time announcer and former Phillie, Tim McCarver.  My Pop-Pop probably forever tainted me against McCarver, but I do respect the man for his longevity and his love of the game.

1978 SSPC Baseball the Phillies Way - Part Two

Part one of the 1978 SSPC Phillies gallery was posted yesterday, and this is part two.  There seem to be a whole lot of photos taken at night in this set, as opposed to the day-time pictures featured in the 1976 SSPC set.  I'm not even sure Tug McGraw is standing inside The Vet on his card.  And I've always liked the Bake McBride card, since you can clearly see "Welcome to Veterans Stadium" on the scoreboard over his right shoulder.

1971 Arco Phillies

With all of the vintage baseball card designs Topps has recylced over the years, I'm surprised they haven't used the clean, classic design of the 1971 Arco cards.  In 1971, 8" x 10" cards were produced for four different teams to be given away at Arco gas stations serving those team's markets.  The Red Sox, Yankees, Pirates and Phillies each participated in the promotion, and the 13 Phillies cards are featured here.
