Male Cardinal - Winter Delight

Snow was falling, so much like stars filling the dark trees that one could easily imagine its reason for being was nothing more than prettiness.

White-crowned Sparrow

"Interest in the changing seasons is a much happier state of mind than being hopelessly in love with spring."
- George Santayana

Oh but I AM hopelessly in love with Spring, Summer and Fall ....
Winter not so much!
But it does give me an opportunity to capture birds in the snow.

Tufted Titmouse on a Winter Day

Winter Morning Along The Road

I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, "go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again."
- Lewis Carroll

We had the BEST kind of snow last week -
it stuck to the trees but not to the road :)
This was the day after our snow - and it was still clinging beautifully
to the trees.

Winter Landscape - Hungry Mother State Park

"One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;
And have been cold a long time
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter
Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a few leaves."
- Wallace Stevens, The Snow Man, 1923

Winter Branches

"There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you ..... In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself."
- Ruth Stout
