1988 Fleer Glossy #198

Card Review: 5.5  You literally have to hold this next to the '88 Fleer base card to tell it's a glossy.  There is a thing\ glossy coating on the front and as far as I can tell the back is identical.  When side by side with the regular '88 Fleer, you can see the difference when you tilt them and the light reflects differently.  It's that subtle.  With the exception of '89 (which was merely ok), Fleer Glossy was an annual disappointment.

1990 Fleer Canadian #364 (Previously labeled "Fleer Glossy")

Card Review: 4.8  Feel free to jump in if I'm wrong, but this is a glossy version of the 1990 Fleer set.  I believe these were sold in factory sets like the other Fleer Glossy efforts, but I can't find proof of this anywhere.

Keeping with tradition, 1990 Fleer Glossy is nearly impossible to distinguish from the base set without close examination.  At least the backs on the '90 set make it a little easier.

****UPDATE APRIL 2013****

It has come to my attention that this is not in fact a "glossy" set but rather a Canadian set.  Hence, the near-impossible to detect "gloss" is not in fact there.  Now there are some varying opinions out there as to whether or not a "glossy" set was produced.  I'm not calling the people arguing that there was wrong, but based on my research I just think they're making the same mistake I was.  Maybe there is in fact a glossy set out there, but for now I'm comfortable assuming there is not.  This card has been relabeled in the title.

So the distinguishing feature is not extra gloss, but just the "PTD in Canada" shown below.  Not very exciting.

1988 Fleer Star Stickers #98

 











Card Review: 9.1  I've always like this card.  The back in particular.  This is another random '88 set that I know little to nothing about.  This is card #98, so it was likely too big to be sold in deck-of-cards style box package the way Revco and K-Mart used to do.  But that's just a guess.  It may well have been sold in packs.  I'm guessing someone at Fleer took also liked the way these cards looked, because the gray on the front border is identical to the gray Fleer used for their 1989 base set.

1988 Fleer Mini #91

Card Review: 3.5  I don't remember ever seeing these Fleer mini's in 1988.  There was so many junk sets put out then it was hard to keep track.  I have no idea how large the set was or how it was sold.  All in all, it's a very underwhelming card.  Though I like the photo selection a little better than the base card, but no where near as much as the box bottom.  I'd guess that all three photo's are from the same at-bat.

1988 Fleer Baseball MVP #42

Card Review: 9.3  Had this picture been used on the Fleer Award Winners card in 1988, it would have made for a great looking card.  As it is, this one is pretty good in it's own right.  I'm not wild about the all of the yellow, but it's not terrible either.  In 1988 I wasn't concerned at all.  I was just estatic that Wallach was included in one of these junk sets put out by Fleer.  The red batting practice jersey is always a welcomed sight, and made for some great looking Expos cards.  MLB.com is selling a Tim Raines Red B.P. jersey, I'll be first in line to overpay for a Wallach one if they ever start selling his.

1990 Fleer League Leaders #41

Card Review: 9.8  Fleer put out a lot of these small sets in the 80's and early 90's, sold in packaging resembling a deck of cards.  For the most part I liked them, with a few glaring exceptions.  I happen to like really this one, and am always a fan of any card featuring the Expos red batting practice jersey.

It's also a photo from the batting net used during batting practice.  Cards featuring players around the batting net/cage used to be common practice by Topps in the 60's and 70's (and I think '81 Fleer is has a good amount too), but had gone by the wayside by the time Wallach started showing up on cards.

1993 Fleer Final Edition #F-86

Card Review: 8.0  I like this "Final Edition" card better than Wallach's '93 Fleer base card.  It's just a cool photo on the front.  No idea why, but for some reason it reminds me of a comic book cover.  This "Final Edition" was the replacement for Fleer Update.  New name, same thing.

1988 Fleer Baseball All-Stars #43

Card Review: 8.5 Fleer put out a lot of standalone sets in 1988.  This is one of about half-dozen boxed sets.  All in all there's nothing wrong with it. My biggest complaint is all the dead space at the top of the card.  It should have been cropped closer to the name, or the name should have been written bigger, and perhaps given some color.  Still, despite that, there's something about this card design that I like, and has grown me over the years.

Card Review: 9.5 I actually really like the basic design of this card.  It reminds me of the 1986-87 Fleer Basketball design, one of my favorite non-baseball sets.  The photo is nothing special, but I like the card.  And unlike the '90 Fleer Award Winners, this one actually tells you what Award the player won (Silver Slugger in the case of Wallach)

1988 Fleer Box-Bottoms #C-15

Card Review: 9.6  This card could be a case study in photo-selection.  Whereas Wallach's base card in this set was an example of poor photo-selection, this box-bottom represents an example of good photo-selection, and it makes all the difference.  Same design, much better looking card.

Fun Facts: *These "box-bottom" cards were found on the bottom of wax boxes.  With the '88 Fleer boxes, there were 3 player cards, and one team logo card.
*In 1988 I bought more empty boxes of '88 Fleer (3) than I did actual packs of '88 Fleer (zero).

Card Review: 5.0 I've always found this to be a very off-brandish looking card.  The photo quality also leaves a lot to be desired. At least Fleer went with complete stats on the back, though they didn't bother to mention what award Wallach actually won (I'm assuming it's the Gold Glove).

Card Review: 3.2 This card gets a lower rating than the regular '87 Fleer because Fleer actually meant for it to be special.  You really have to look hard to tell that this card is any different from the non-glossy.  Fleer's inaguaral attempt at copying Topps Tiffany is nothing short of a complete failure.

1992 Fleer #494

Card Review: 8.4  I remember really liking this set back in 1992.  As was the case in '91, I bought a ton of these trying to pull "Pro-Vision" cards, a subset of cards depicting paintings of various players.  I still love the "Pro-Vision" cards, especially the black bordered ones in the '91 set.  Sadly, Wallach was never given the "Pro-Vision" treatment by Fleer.

As much as I may have liked this set as an eleven year old in 1992, I can't say with any conviction that's it's aged very well.  The photos on the front are too small, with way too much space being consumed by the green and (unnecessary) white on the border.

1987 Fleer #334

Card Review: 4.9 I was never a fan of this set.  I'm pretty sure I never bought so much as a single pack of it.  That was due in large part to '87 Topps being one of my all-time favorite designs, and '87 Donruss also being a great looking set (as far as I'm concerned anyway).  By comparison this Fleer set really suffers.  The way the different shades of blue on the front and back clash has always bothered me.  This set just has the look and feel of one the many small boxed sets Fleer was producing for stores at the time.

1982 Fleer #210

Card Review: 9.4 I like the backs of '82 Fleer better than the fronts (which have a weird waxy feel to them).  The first one of these I got was at my local card shop "The Batter's Box" in Phoenix.  I had literally just asked the guy for it, and he got annoyed, because I was like 7 and had asked once a week for six months straight.  Then some kid came in with a couple of cards to sell so the dealer told me to get lost.  One of the cards the kid had was this one.  The dealer rudely dismissed all the kid's cards as crap but told the kid he'd take the '82 Fleer Wallach, "I'll give ya a quarter, it's not like anyone collects Wallachs."  The kid took the offer and the guy turned to me, still in earshot of the kid, and said "one dollar."  He wasn't trying to be funny.  In the history of human civilization, I'm not sure there has ever been a bigger collection of dirt bags, than 1980's baseball card shop owners.

1985 Fleer #412

Card Review: 9.7  I have a soft spot for this set.  I remember walking to the grocery store with my mother and younger brother in 1985, and I'd get a cello-pack of '85 Fleer and my brother would usually get a candy or ice-cream bar.  It was the first year I was really buying cards of my on volition and not having them given to me.  I still think this set has held up well, and the colors contrast nicely with the gray borders.

As for this card itself, it's really a nice photo, something different from the standard batting or fielding shot.  It's one of the better action shots of Wallach to ever show up on a card.


Fun Facts:  I'm 95% sure this was the 3rd Tim Wallach card I ever had, after the '83 Topps and '85 Topps.  I may of had the '84 Fleer prior to this one, but I don't recall for certain.

Card Review: 9.8  I've always liked this card.  The blue and red in the Expos uniform goes really well with the blue and red in the card border.  On top of that, it's a unique photo.  I can't think of another Wallach card that has anything similar, or even close to it.  About the only draw back to this card is the yellow on the back.  I'm just not wild about it.

Card Review: 7.0  Not a bad card for Fleer. It may be a bit tacky, way over-glossed, and be an ugly grey, but it was a rough era for cards.  Topps, Donruss, and Fleer would have been better served to just hold steady with their traditional cards rather than try to compete with the over-glossed premium craze.
