The recently released Tamil film 'Maharaja' starring
Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role is running successfully in theatres. While the film still has a good occupancy in the third week of its screening and after being critically acclaimed by many celebrities, fans and critics, singer and dubbing artist Chinmayi Sripada said that she will not watch the film.
Taking to X on Monday, Chinmayi expressed her dissatisfaction with
Vairamuthu being the lyricist of the film 'Maharaja'.
She further explained that the film is about rape and sexual abuse and it still had Vairamuthu 0 an accused of sexual misconduct by 18 women. She also questioned the team for choosing Vairamuhtu to be part of the film.
Her statement read, "I sadly just got to know Vairamuthu wrote the lyrics in 'Maharaja' - a film that talks about rape and sexual abuse. The Tamil industry is the ONLY one in the WORLD to actually ban someone from working because I named their favourite molester. I keep hoping for the powerful in Tamil cinema to do better or to do the right thing - only to be disappointed time and again. Quiet the sensitivity. Someday at some point will there even be a retribution, I wonder. May everyone who promotes molesters, rapists and sex offenders get what they deserve, manifold."
Directed by
Nithilan Swaminathan, 'Maharaja' was released in theatres on June 14. The film starred Vijay Sethupathi,
Anurag Kashyap, Abhirami,
Mamta Mohandas and Natty Nataraj in lead roles. The film in 10 days has grossed over Rs 81 crore and is nearing the Rs 100 crore mark.
