Three reasons why Gen Z is drinking less alcohol

Gen Z individuals, born between 1997 and 2012, are notably consuming less alcohol than previous generations, with a 20% drop compared to millennials. This shift is linked to increased health awareness, longer-term decision-making, and concern for social media appearance. Their priorities include mental and physical wellness, which contributes to this behavioral change.
Three reasons why Gen Z is drinking less alcohol
Alcohol consumption, often referred to as 'drinking' is stereotyped as a habit that most of the young kids fall prey to. And when it comes to Gen Z or Generation Z ( people born between 1997 to 2012), it is assumed that they must be consuming a lot of alcohol. But, if we go by reports, the reality is totally different. As per reports doing rounds on social media, Gen Zers are drinking less than young people in the past generations.

As per a report by Berenberg Research, there is a significant drop of 20 percent less alcohol per capita than millennials did at their age.

Another study by the University of Michigan, many Gen Zers are forgoing booze entirely, and the number of college-age adults abstaining from alcohol has grown from 20 to 28 percent over the last two decades.

What's the reason behind it?
As per experts, the change has become of the awarnese of the risks related to drinking and its other side effects of their fitnes, and poor decision making in the long run.
It is said that the younger generation is well-versed about the lifestyle habits that are good and bad for them, and how alcohol consumption is actually toxic for human health.
It is also said that they are very much concerned about their social media image and how do they look. Hence, to maintain that they prefer to avoid alcohol consumption to keep the skin and body healthy.


What are the risks associated with drinking?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular drinking practice can lead to numerous health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, liver disease and memory problems and cause at least eight different kinds of cancers.

And if we go by the statement of the World Health Organization, there is no level of safe alcohol consumption. It was mentioned by WHO in a statement in The Lancet Public Health: when it comes to alcohol consumption, there is no safe amount that does not affect health. The same report mentioned that to identify a “safe” level of alcohol consumption, valid scientific evidence would need to demonstrate that at and below a certain level, there is no risk of illness or injury associated with alcohol consumption.
Gen Z and their priorities
It has been reported that Gen Z prioritizes both mental and physical wellness more than past generations.
A survey conducted by Becker's Hospital Review revealed that half of Gen Zers work out, compared to just 45 percent of other generations. Also, they take personalized supplements and attend regular therapy sessions at higher rates than millennials.
According to a 2021 survey findings from Technomic, a food industry research and analytic company mentioned by The Hill, only 58 percent of Gen Z consider going out to bars and restaurants, compared to 65 percent of millennials.
