Tiger Beach Bahamas

Tiger Beach Bahamas was the first and is the best place to dive with Tiger Sharks.

Tiger Beach Bahamas

Tiger Beach is a premier shark diving destination located in the Bahamas. It is known for having the highest quantity and different species of sharks, making it one of the most sought-after destinations for shark diving enthusiasts. Professional and amateur underwater photographers visit Tiger Beach by Liveaboard for an unmatched shark diving experience.

Located on the northwestern edge of the Little Bahama Bank, approximately 25 miles north of West End, Grand Bahama, Tiger Beach is on the edge of the bank’s transition zone, from deep to shallow waters with towering coral seascapes fed by the super warm and clear waters of the Gulf Stream. The name Tiger Beach came from the shallow, sandy areas and clear water.

Tiger Beach is known for its incredible bio-diversity and prolific fish life, both large and small. The area boasts a thriving population of sharks, dolphins, turtles, and much more. Up to six different species of sharks, mainly the magnificent, and larger female Tiger Sharks, can be found in the area along with Hammerhead, Bull, Reef, Lemon, and Nurse sharks.

Fish Tales is the prime location for Tiger Beach and the Dolphin Dream, where we will do four dives per day, including shark feeding dives. We alternate our dives between structured Tiger Shark feeding dives and non-feeding dives where you can swim around the Tiger Sharks and reef area. The white sand bottom of the dive site sits at 50 feet (15m), with the reef coming up to 30 feet (10m). Visibility can be excellent at times with 200 feet (60m) clarity, plus bright sunshine and white sand make for great pictures. The current is usually mild tidal flow. The average count of sharks is 5-7 Tiger Sharks, 15 +/- Lemon Sharks, 20+ Reef Sharks, a few Nurse Sharks, and the occasional Bull Shark. Five different species and well over 40 sharks on just one dive! It doesn’t get any better.

Tiger Shark diving started in the early ‘90s on the western edge of the Little Bahama Bank. Since then, other locations have started Tiger Shark diving, but Tiger Beach remains the best Tiger Shark diving spot with its shallow clear water and usually calm sharks.

Captain Scott Smith of the Dolphin Dream started diving the western edge of the Little Bahama Bank in 1980. As he traveled to different sites and looked for Spotted dolphin he would see Tiger Sharks in the shallow clear waters of the bank. After fishing for dinner, he would tie the fish carcasses off the back of the boat at night, and the Tiger Sharks would come up for an easy meal. In the mid-1990s, he would use this method to entice the Tiger Sharks to come in close while professional film crews and photographers took pictures.
