159 reactions · 12 shares | How I make needle felted hummingbird feathers! I promised to make this reel a couple weeks back, but I have been so busy I just couldn’t find the time to put it together. This is a brief overview of how I make feathers for my hummingbird’s wings. First I cut wire (in this case a 28 gauge) into the approximate length I want my feathers to be. I usually add in a few larger pieces for tail feathers. Next, I blend my wool and lay out a line of it on parchment paper. Once I have this layer out I add a layer of fabric heat fusing tape and lay down the wire I cut on top of it. I put a really thin layer of wool over the wires and then lay a second layer of the tape. If you add too much wool between the tape layers it won’t fuse well, so just use a thin pieces.
