A pair of academics from Durham University in the United Kingdom have discovered an 827-year-old reference to an unusual weather-related phenomenon in an obscure medieval English text.

TYPES OF LIGHTENING - Ball lightning - One of the more mysterious forms, ball lightning looks like a drifting, glowing sphere of light. In 2012, researchers in China were able to record high-speed video of ball lightning and capture its emission spectrum for the first time. Their analysis revealed that in this case, the glowing ball of lightning was made up of vaporized minerals from the soil. But for many, this one observation does not rule out all other potential causes of ball lightening.
