Dimensional painting

This relief on canvas by our entrant Adriana Potkanska depicts a surreal tree with hands raising up amongst branches. A relief painting is carved, creating a “raised” two-dimensional surface on a canvas, which is then painted. This unique way of depicting art can show true thought and emotive language behind the work of the artist. Using sculpting as a way of portraying a 3D effect as the art protrudes off the canvas can give a whole new experience to this work.

This is an 11 x 14 original mixed media painting just completed. Acrylics, resin, clay. Seaweeds, corals, starfish and seahorse are dimensional clay pieces and painted and rest of canvas is hand painted as well. This will have a layer of resin, I took photo prior to that as the shine makes taking a photo difficult. I like fat, thick, dimensional painting. Some works are spread on with a pallet knife or trowel, others are piped onto the canvas. Sometimes I even use my fingers!
