Very active and boisterous in the understory and forest canopy. Aggressively chases other birds from flowering trees. The long bill of the ʻiʻiwi assists it to extract nectar from the flowers of the Hawaiian lobelioids, which have decurved corollas. Vocalizations include a complex array of gurgles, chuckles and reedy notes.
