Traditional dress for women in Vietnam is the “Ao Dai” literally meaning “Long Dress”. Based on historical evidences Ao Dai was officially recognized as the national costume of men and women during the reign of the Nguyen Vu Vuong (1739-1765). The outfit consisted of a long, loosely fitted tunic and pants. During the French colonization of Vietnam in the 1930’s, Vietnamese fashion became inspired by Parisian fashion and the 2-panel of the áo ngũ thân (dress worn by northern Vietnamese women)
