Ibn Battuta (1304-1368) Born in Tangiers, Morocco, Ibn Battuta spent almost three decades (1525-54), covering 75,000 miles in his travels. He visited China, Mecca, Persia, Mesopotamia, Asia Minor and Bokhara in Central Asia, southern Spain, the North African city of Timbuktu, India, and Sumatra. Settling in Fez, Morocco, he wrote the "Rihlah," a memoir of his journeys, a collection of social, cultural, and political observations.
