Daily Express April, 1965

Published 23 April 1965.

eleanorcorleone:

Spanish article about George and Pattie’s divorce from 1977, which details Pattie celebrating by dancing on stage with Eric at his Copenhagen gig on 9 June 1977.

__________

The ex-Beatle and his wife in 1960

Divorce granted for George Harrison and his wife.

The earned it after two years of complete separation.

Pattie Boyd, the ex wife of ex Beatle George Harrison (apologies for so many exes) received the news her divorce had been granted in a rather unusual way: by dancing the Can-Can.

George and Pattie filed for separation after several years of turbulent life together, closely monitored by Scotland Yard’s narcotics squad (in 1969 they were fined five million pesetas). Now, after the two-year waiting period stipulated by law, a judge has granted their divorce.

Pattie was in Copenhagen working with Eric Clapton’s band. We haven’t heard from George Harrison, but assume he was with his beloved Olivia Arias, the young Mexican woman who has comforted him through past sorrow.

Pattie found out about her divorce while dancing in Copenhagen with Eric Clapton’s group.

Photo 1 courtesy of Dan Moss; photo 2 © Herald Sun; photo 3 is from the auction listing of a letter sent by George’s mother to a fan.

“Although [George’s father] Harry said he was a bus driver before his retirement, he relaxed his personal modesty a bit and revealed his best times were during prohibition. ‘I smuggled booze,’ he said, ‘and knew just about every gangster in the U.S.’
His illegal liquor smuggling worked in. Nicely with his 12 year career in the Merchant Marine, sailing out of Liverpool. He chooses to consider his prohibition activities as a mission of mercy and explains: ‘I just hated to see all those Americans getting sick on that homemade stuff, so I brought in good whiskey, gin, Scotch and anything else I could get my hands on. The ship owners never knew. Just think of all those thirsty Americans I helped,’ he said with an impish grin.
He also revealed he and his wife Lou[ise] taught ballroom dancing to 900 people who crowded into the Liverpool Union Hall on Saturday nights. At one time or another, he was a house painter, shoe repairman, union official and an active member of Britain’s Labor Party.
[…] When the Beatles came along, how did life change for a hard working bus driver and his wife? ‘We had to move out of the house. Everyone the world over knew where we lived. My wife and I personally answered all the 200 or so letters we received a week. Our life changed quite a bit but I like to think our personalities didn’t.’
[…] Ending the conversation with his personal philosophy, Harry said ‘I like nice people and I like to be nice to nice people.’ Harry Harrison is nice people.” - article by Ginger Valeriay, The Observer (December 10, 1974)

“George really was interested in visual — and he used a camera, video camera too, from early days. Also, his father was a merchant seaman, and there’s lots of photographs of Australia, around the world […]. And maybe he picked that up from his father.” - Olivia Harrison, WNYC (2011)

About the second photo: “Mr. Harold Harrison, father of Beatle George, arrived at Station Pier last night with two friends [Mr. And Mrs. Jack Richards] on a world trip.
And George is paying for everyone.” - press blurb, circa 1970
