While Northwest's 747 fleet in the early 1970s was busy plying the Pacific, its 707-320 passenger fleet was relegated to domestic duties where its range capability was wasted - and its capacity was too close to new 727-200s. Yet NWA had many domestic sectors that needed something with more capacity than Boeing's narrowbodies, but not

At DTW, Northwest DC9's often pushback with reverse thrust ("powerback"). This is what happens when the airport crew leaves some of the ice and snow on the ramp. Very showy, but perfectly safe - for planes with tail-mounted engines. - Photo taken at Detroit - Metropolitan Wayne County (DTW / KDTW) in Michigan, USA on December 4, 2005.

As a visual designer, one of the things I liked best about the Northwest livery (all versions) was the signature red tail. It was certainly the brightest color choice among the US majors, which made it easy to spot and identify Northwest aircraft at any busy airport. I also liked their final logo (which you can see at the bottom of this post) – which consisted of a simple ring with an arrow pointing to the Northwest. Simple. Clean. Good. Anyway, I grew up about an hour away from a Northwest…

I don't know if I'm lucky or unlucky. I experienced dumping fuel twice in just six months! First time was on a Air China 747 (Phot id:842786) and here comes the second one. The #4 engine was down when we enrouted DTW-NRT on NW11. We had to dump fuel before diverting to SEA for an emergency landing. Though delayed several hours in SEA for engine repaire and I missed the connection in NRT, I was very happy to be able to take this shot. So, if you want to take those photos, fly with me!:)…
This picture was taken from over 240ft high while standing in the control tower at DTW. From this view you can see the over 1 mile long 97-gate Edward H. McNamara Terminal. The NWA 747s are parked in the center and can be seen as passengers enter the terminal. - Photo taken at Detroit - Metropolitan Wayne County (DTW / KDTW) in Michigan, USA on September 8, 2002.

Former Northwest Airlines Capt. John Hansen flew the airline's Boeing 747 route from Detroit to Toyko for years. In 2002, the plane tried to kill him and 400 passengers. This is the never-before published story of how he saved them.
