a close up of a person's hand holding a small green and blue insect

This guy is just 5 minutes old. I released him when his neon green wings and disco gold body hardened, turning to a dark brown and bronze-green. The cicadas are a superfamily, the Cicadoidea, of insects in the order Hemiptera. They are in the suborder Auchenorrhyncha, along with smaller jumping bugs such as leafhoppers and froghoppers

i sneakily restocked my cicadidae prints this weekend!! ✨ if you order now you might be able to get them just in time for the amazing, screaming emergence of the 17-year cicadas happening shortly here in eastern north america :^)🌾

Why The Cicada Sings Seventeen years Under ground The cicada waits Without making a sound. Then one summer morning With no one in sight The cicada emerges Into the light. No wonder she sings All evening long. For seventeen years She held back her song. ©Debra and Charles Ghigna

a green and blue insect hanging from a tree branch

The other species of cicada I saw on Barro Colorado island, Panama. When newly metamorphosed it is similar in appearance to the first species, but there are a few differences like eye colr, size, body hair, head shape, etc... This species maintains prettier colors afterwards in comparison to the duller tones on the first species.
