1. Clean it down and then sand with 120 grit sandpaper till it's nice and smooth 

2. Stain the top with 2 coats of Jacobean Dark Oak wood dye from Colron

3. Prime the base and then use two coats of your chosen paint colour. I used Mcphersons primer and Stony Ground Eggshell colour matched by @decoratingcentreonline and leftover from my bedroom panelling project 

4.
