The chair shows a pair of eight or nine S-curved staves fitted into the runners or the base and the armrests. The silhouetted back with an incised outline of an empty coat-of-arms shield on the front and markings on the back is engaged with a peg on one side and slotted at the other holding the folding X-construction; the hinge point is formed by a wood pin threaded laterally through the center

Here is an old X chair with recently upholstered leather sling seat and back rail. I think the wood is mahogany, and it is beautifully inlaid on all the wood surfaces except the back. In the center cross sections of the X are fabulous carved rosettes, that even have simple carved backs.
