Shetland knitting patterns

The Shetland Wool Week patron for 2020 has been named today as Shetland knitwear designer, Wilma Malcolmson, who is internationally renowned for her skilfully blended Fair Isle knitwear. The much-anticipated annual hat pattern, which is now synonymous with the launch of the patron has also been released. This year’s official hat, designed by Wilma, is called ‘Katie’s Kep’.

Located in Lerwick, the capital town of Shetland, Jamieson & Smith, are long established as the islands primary purchaser of the Shetland Wool clip. We annually purchase the raw fleece from over 700 local crofters andfarmers.

I thought it might be time to catch up on some handspun garments instead of the vararfeldur. The real work has still been going on as well as the weaving! Two Allovers (Fair Isle jumpers) have been finished recently. This one, a slipover, in the Mousa design but with madder red and onion yellow in the ribs and a small amount through the Fair Isle. We are almost there!!! In a couple of weeks time 'wool weekers' will start arriving, and Wool Week classes and events starting just a few days later. The final preparations are well under way. Niela and myself, as Hoswick Wool Week, have almost everything ready for our classes, and look forward to meeting old friends and making new ones.
