It dates back from the early 1900ths or end 1800ths, it looks in perfect condition, the leather is very thick, and as hard a s a rock, i think there was never a liner in this helmet, original they used a towel under it. i found it here in Belgium on a fleamarket, the seller told me it comes back from the old Belgian colonie'Belgian Congo' but i can not conform this becouse in Belgium they also did had coalmines in the past anyway belgian congo or Belgian and original from a very long time ago and in great condition i shipp this very good packed. Rare Antique Childs Leather Coal Miners Helmet
Up for bids is a rare early antique leather helmet made for a child as protection from bumping his head on the hard stone roof of the coal mine while he was working in the mine. Before child labor laws in the early 1900's boys as young as seven or eight were used to clean out the low seams of coal that the men were too big to get into. Helmets were rare in those days and probably expensive to buy so not very many boys or even the older men wore them. Someone cared enough for the kid that wore this helmet to buy him one. It wouldn't save him if the roof of the mine caved in but it did help against minor bumps to the head everyday. The helmet measures 7 3/4" long by 5 1/2" wide on the inside and is 4" high on the outside and the brim sticks out 2" from the hat in the front. There is a hole in the brim where the little ... moreminer would have hung his light or lantern. The helmet shows wear from being used but is still in very nice condition for its age. I tried to show pictures from every angle so if you have any questions please ask before you place a bid. The helmet is from southwestern Pennsylvania where coal mining has been going on since the mid 1800's.

The back part of the liner is partially ripped in two spots. It has a leather loop on the back for hanging(original) and a mount on the front that holds the lamp. One side of the mounting bracket is damaged and there is a spider crack right next to that but I can't feel where it goes through to the inside. On the very back right under the leather loop, a small piece is missing at the stitch line 1/2"3/4"approx. No rust on the lamp that I could see. Vintage coal miner's helmet that I can not locate a maker's mark/name on. Definitely made of fiberglass with a leather mount riveted into the front for a headlamp. Label residue seen next to leather. Leather also has a metal re-enforcement on the backside. Shows some small chips and dings from use and interior liner is missing. Circumference of interior measures: 24" a width of 7-1/4" Front to back measures: 10-1/2" And height from tabletop to highest: 5-3/8" More pics or any questions can be easily messaged through eBay messaging. Leather turtle top Turtleshell Miners Helmet with carbide lamp
Well used with wear and soiling. Initials HH carved on brim and top. The rope stitching is coming loose on the back. Headband is broken in back as is suspension band. Carbide lamp is a Auto-lite in massively overused condition. Dings everywhere and bottom will not unscrew. He must of spent all his money on booze. Enjoy!
