This Channel offers an insight into the West Papuan independence struggle against Indonesia.
Indonesia invaded the Western part of New Guinea in 1963, occupied the land with over 1 million Malay settlers and started to exploit the vast copper, gold, oil and gas resources with the help of companies like Freeport-McMoran (USA), BP (UK) and others. Most indigenous Papuans oppose this proxy-colonization. In retaliation they suffer ruthless repression.
In 1989 the filmmaker Claudio von Planta succeeded to produce 'Rebels of the Forgotten World', his first documentary on the Papuan independence movement. He stayed in touch ever since and together with other filmmakers he continues documenting the West Papuan struggle for self-determination.
