The gender earnings gap is an oft-discussed topic, as it should be. The new College Scorecard website from the US Department of Education offers average male and female earnings by school at six and ten years after enrollment (i.e., shortly after graduation, and after four to six years of work experience). I’ve plotted the change in the gap by subtracting the average female salary from the average male salary for some of the top-tier schools in four categories: medical institutions, private universities, private liberal arts colleges, and public institutions. As you can see, the gap always starts out smaller, but grows as men are promoted and given raises more readily. Out of all the schools, the only ‘negative gap’ – where women had a higher average than men – was six years after enrollment at Haverford.

George R. R. Martin claims that he is a feminist, but there has still been ample debate over whether his popular series, Game of Thrones, reflects those values. While the women of Westeros may strive for power just as the men do, a word-frequency analysis of the books thus far reveals a clear bias towards male terminology. One interesting pattern? In books 4/5, “girl” starts to overtake “boy.” We just may be seeing a future queen.

Using 2012 data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program, I’ve graphed select offenses by age and gender.

The top graphs show, for women and men separately, a timeseries of the number of people arrested by age from 15-24. Outside this age range, the FBI compiles the data into greater than one year bins. The scales on the graphs are identical, so you can compare curves for a given offense between the sexes. Not surprisingly, the arrest numbers for men are higher, but the order of which offenses are most common is not the same, and the shapes of the curves differ.

The lower graph shows the gender balance of arrests for a given type of offense. Offenders of all ages are included in these data. The highest percentage for men is forcible rape (99.1%); for women, it’s prostitution (67.7%). The closest offense to an even split is embezzlement (51.6% of arrests are men).

Offenses that include violence generally have higher percentages of male arrests. For example, larceny is only 56.9% male arrests, but robbery is 87% male arrests. Overall, violent crimes are 80.1% male arrests, while property crimes are 62.6% male arrests. The gender balance for all arrests is 73.8% male.

It is well known that, despite great strides in recent years toward gender equality, there is still a considerable gender gap in the workforce, both in terms of compensation and representation. This graphic visualizes both of these variables using Census data (ACS 2011 5-yr) of the civilian employed population (full-time, year-round workers aged 16 years and over).

The map on the left shows the ratio of earning in each county: the median salary for women divided by the median salary for men. The light blue counties are those where women have a higher median salary than men. Darker shades indicate a larger bias toward higher salaries for men. The histogram below displays the number of counties in each $5k salary bin. The median among all counties is $30,281 for women, and $40,980 for men.

The map on the right represents the distribution of gender in the workforce: the number of female workers per male worker. Here, light blue indicates counties where there are more full-time, year-round female workers than male workers. The histogram measures the number of counties by the percentage of workers who are women. The median among all counties is a 42% female workforce, or about 0.72 women per man.

This graph shows the popularity and gender balance of elective cosmetic surgeries in the USA during 2012. The data do not include minimally invasive procedures like injectables and laser treatments, which are much more common; according to the data source, over 6M people received Botox or Dysport last year (94% were female)! The graph on the left shows the most popular surgeries, while the right-hand graph shows less common procedures (all the muddled lines at the bottom of the left-hand graph). The proportion of each elective surgery performed on females is shown in purple, the male proportion in green.

Sixty percent of all cosmetic plastic surgery in the USA comprises four procedures: breast augmentation, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, and liposuction. Breast augmentation accounts for the plurality of all cosmetic surgeries in the US at 18.4%. According to the US Census, there are approximately 75M women in the US aged 20-55. Of the ~286k breast augmentation surgeries, ~270k were performed on women in this age range; this equates to about one cosmetic breast augmentation for every 275 women aged 20-55! Disturbing, isn’t it?

Overall, 87% of all elective cosmetic surgeries were performed on females. For women, the five most common were the four listed above plus facelifts. Among men, the most common procedures were nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, liposuction, breast reduction, and facelift. Of the surgeries graphed, only two were more common among men than women: chin augmentation (52% for men) and hair transplantation (70% for men). Two surgeries not plotted – because they were performed fewer than 500 times over the entire year – were also more common in men: calf augmentation (55% for men) and pectoral implants (all men).

This map shows the number of charges received by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission by state (per 10,000 state residents) in 2012. The colors reflect the total number of filings (blue is low, red is high), and the overlay shows the most common discrimination category for that state. The categories have been recoded from the original source, and include:

Race, Color, and National Origin; Gender and the Equal Pay Act; Age; Disability.

Although included in the number of filings, retaliation was not considered as a discrimination category, as it relates to all discrimination types. Had it been included, retaliation would have been the most common type in all states. Religion was considered as a category, but was not the mode for any state.

The median number of filings among the individual states was 2.3 per 10,000 residents. As a country, the USA had ~3.2 charges per 10,000 citizens. The outliers (>7) were Arkansas (8.0) and DC (11.0). Geographically, the states with higher values tended to be southern states. Regarding the most common discrimination types, race was the predominant issue for 40 states. Gender discrimination was the most common for six states, including Arkansas. Disability was the mode category for three states, and age, for one state.
