This is just the soothing tonic I needed for these anxious times. Have had this on repeat play! Favorite album of the year??
Favorite track: Heavy Early.
At some point in 2018, carl read the johnny marr biography, and had a spark. I always love it when the words and music and creations of humans whose work we have loved for years gives us that incredible push to make something new. Carl started playing his guitar, and from the upstairs of our house i could hear him, and this loop of a kinda jangly rhythmic riff he had just come up with. I loved it. He looped it and i listened for a long time. Multiple days for a long time. Something about it sat with me in a very good place and there was so much about this riff that was new and different and exciting to me.
At about that same time, carl sat down with our old yamaha synth and found this beautiful, spiritual path of sound on it, this gentle meditative world. He added bits to it here and there, and i'd listen and be immersed. We called it the alice piece because it reminded us of alice coltrane, one of our absolute heroes on this earth.
But 2018 was also a hard year for us, and we lost carl's dad that winter. We also had to cancel our performance at the kranky showcase in chicago that winter, and so much of our life became heavy with loss and sadness. The new pieces carl had started sat, unattended to, rather ignored, while we tried to pick up the pieces and move forward.
That moving forward resulted in the allegiance and conviction album, which as you all know came out at the very beginning of the world shut down because of the pandemic. We chose to work on shorter pieces and different moods while the long form (they were close to an hour each) sketches carl started in 2018 simply languished.
Fast forward to the summer of 2023. carl and i had lost our friend rose, and it was weighing on us that life can be cut short and people can be robbed of opportunities, and then we found out our beloved brian mcbride had passed away. I had quit making music, and essentially quit touching my guitar, in 2021 when both of our dogs died suddenly and i went into a depression that lasted several years. We had also closed the record store, and i was in a dark place. Losing rose was rotten, but losing brian made me see and feel a number of things about what time means and how life can be cut so short. While recovering from a massive, life saving surgery, i ruminated on the loss of brian and started working on these pieces from 2018.
the result is what we have here – two pieces close to an hour long, each showcasing opposite ends of our creative endeavors. One beautiful, jangly, guitar driven piece that is joyous, and one long form meditation on the path of life. They combine to bookend emotions and experiences. Nods to the past and to friends. We hope you enjoy them.

Personally, this is my favorite Grouper album. The lofi sound of this record is amazing and it gives off that melancholic, ethereal, and somewhat depressive feel to it. That kind of album you listen to either when it's a cold early morning or when it's a freezing moonlit night. Love this album so much. The Laughing Stock
