Token Card
In the Digimon Card Game, a token is a non-card object from outside of either player's deck that enters play as a Digimon when a card effect specifies to do so. As the token is not a card, all of its card information is supplied by the card that plays it, and it can be physically represented by anything that can't be mistaken for an actual card because determining what properties it has is simply a matter of reading the card that played it.
As non-card objects, tokens are inherently restricted in how they can be operated on by the game. Certain rules are always in effect for all tokens:
- Tokens can't evolve.
- Tokens can't have cards placed under them. If an effect attempts to do so, it will fail in the same way it would when attempting to place cards under an unaffected Digimon.
- Tokens can't become linked, even if they would otherwise meet link requirements.
- Tokens can only exist in the battle area. When they would leave the battle area, either by deletion or being sent to another area, they are removed from play entirely.
- If an effect with a cost like "By destroying 1 Digimon" is used to remove a token, it counts as paying the cost. However, any effects waiting for a card to be added to the area it is sent to will not trigger because nothing was actually sent to that area.
- Your opponent has a [Volée & Zerdrücken] token, which is level 4, and no other Digimon. You evolve into [BT11-033 Mirage Gaogamon] and return the token to the hand. Since the token was "returned" by this effect, your opponent does not add their top security card to the hand. However, since nothing actually entered your opponent's hand, Mirage Gaogamon's Both Players' Turn doesn't trigger and you don't gain 2 memory.
Originally, tokens could be represented by any out-of-game object. Some release campaigns and P-Bandai sets package physical token cards with them. For streamed tournament matches, Bandai will generally provide generic token cards, which can be seen on the right of this page. In April 2026, Bandai amended the tournament guidelines so that tokens can only be represented by officially released token images; this change was accompanied by the online publication of placeholder images for every token in the game, which players are expected to print out.
