Panday (comics)

The Panday (blacksmith in the Filipino language), whose real name is Flavio, is a fictional Philippine comics character created by writer Carlo J. Caparas and artist Steve Gan. His adventures were serialized in the series Ang Panday in Filipino Komiks in the 1970s. The character took his place in Philippine pop culture when the comics were adapted to film, starring Fernando Poe Jr. as Flavio and Max Alvarado as his archenemy Lizardo. The film spawned three direct sequels as well as other more loosely connected films.

Character description

After a meteorite falls from the sky, Flavio, a noble blacksmith, forges its ore into a dagger (balaraw in Filipino), which magically turns into a sword when he raises it and points to the sky. He uses this sword to fight the demon Lizardo and his supernatural minions who are oppressing his hometown, and other evil forces.

Flavio is just a normal human and has no special powers or skills, except for his swordsmanship that makes him more skillful. He uses his magical blade to fight his supernatural enemies. The blade hums when danger is near and can cut through anything without resistance. He uses a shield on occasion, which is likewise forged from a meteorite. Flavio wears a distinctive costume, composed of a red vest, dark pants and boots.

Ang Panday or simply Panday (lit. The Blacksmith) is a fantasy television series that was aired in the Philippines by ABS-CBN. The pilot episode of the first book (Panday: Unang Yugto) aired on November 7, 2005 and ended with its last episode on December 9, 2005. The second book (Panday: Ang Ikalawang Yugto) aired its pilot episode on April 3, 2006 and ended with the series finale on May 26, 2006. The series is based on the fictional comics character of the same name, which was created by Carlo J. Caparas and illustrated by Steve Gan.

Synopsis

A meteor crashes into the desert of Sto. Sepulcro. The town blacksmith, Flavio, forges a dagger and a churchbell from the remains of the meteor. He uses the dagger to fight off the evil Sombra Oscura, who constantly attacks the town. By some mystical power, the dagger transforms into a great sword every time Flavio wields it.

In his final battle against evil, the Panday faces off against Lizardo, the son of Rodgin and the leader of the Sombras. The battle is intense, but Flavio prevails in the end, vanquishing Lizardo.
