One of the most talented of the Mickey artists in the modern era, Murray's art gave Disney comics a higher level of quality and attention than most kids comics of their day.  It would motivate kids want to copy and trace over them to learn how to draw.

Biting cartooning!  It's common enough of a young boy's thoughts that the shrink doesn't react.

Very dramatic cartooning with Donald Duck's personality switch into the Dark Knight persona!  I would have just locked them in or released the parking brake and rolled off with the truck leaving them no way to take away all that money.

Scrooge comes off looking worse than the stereotypes used for his arrogance and imperialist strongarm tactics backfire.  Maybe they banned it so it won't offend rich corporations and nations.

The sailor hat is a nice touch to go with the horizontal striped swimsuit!

He's literally the ink blot on the cover as he and the flag are the only features that get heavy inking.

Magnificent work with the use of different tonal effects to have the look of a frame from a classic animated short, but with extra fine details to take it a step further into the illustrative realm.

Fabulously pristine work goes into the glossy balanced cartooning and the heartfelt effort that Bonfatti put into this. 

Have you managed to track the provenance? :-) I looked Laqua's catalogs (having almost all of them checked), didn't found it... This was the first time published in AR's CBL 5 in 1989.

A lot of eye contact between the page and the audience with a first person view used on the right panels.  Effective in frights and hauntingly direct.

Oh I'm not denigrating the art, just responding to what you said, "This piece ended up shelved for some reason, in favour of a more cheerful and "politically correct" design."  There was no political correctness back then, just censorship for violence, sex, bad words, etc. to which the bullets flying would not be good to show on a Disney book.

The published cover looks just as politically incorrect raiding other's countries' wealth to take their national treasures away.  They just objected to the bullets flying showing natives unhappy at their heritage being looted.  

A very fine Sunday example from that era and nice to see the color work has stood the test of time!
